Comp 21: Fix Mobile Gaming!
We've all played games on our phones. Most of us have even bought a mobile game and invariably been disappointed. It usually feels like cellphone games are either cookie-cutter copy-paste licensed jobs or they're made by people who apparently don't play games at all... So, why not turn those "I could do better than this" thoughts into action?
Your challenge is to build a game (or games, seeing as we have more than a month this time) that you would enjoy on a phone. Use the phone's strengths: Quick play sessions, always connected and portability whilst being mindful of its shortcomings: Pushing multiple buttons at the same time is difficult, frame rates aren't super fast (set your room speed to 12 or 15 fps in GM) and remember that you only have a small screen to work with.
Gameplay mechanics are king, not graphics. What would you like to play on the move? A detailed management game? A dating simulation? Think you have a way to make an action game that works despite the controls? Want mobile strategy done right? Have a killer idea for a turn-based online game on your phone? Go for it!
Make a game that you would play on a cellphone.
Rules:
Competition starts on November 2nd 2008, 02-11-2008.
Deadline for entries is January 2nd 2009, 02-01-2009.
The use of copyrighted material will not be tolerated. Do not steal!
Use whichever language, tool or development system you are comfortable in. Downloading and using Game Maker is recommended for beginners and for prototyping. - It does not need to be a cellphone development system, you only have to emulate being on a phone!
Ask for help when you get stuck.
Your game must contain all files needed for it to run and should not require other bulky systems to be downloaded or installed, exceptions are browser plugins like Flash and self-contained dlls distributed with the game).
Your final entry must NOT include a readme.txt that EXPLAINS THE CONTROLS, RULES and any other information you want to get across to your users. Cellphones don't do that!
Competition is open to entry for South African citizens, current residents of South Africa and South African passport holders.
The judges' decision is final and no negotiation will be entered into. All risk or liability in case of copyright infringement or other legal issue resides with the entrant, Game.Dev and NAG take no responsibility for entered games.
Entering:
To enter the competition, start a thread titled "21: NameOfYourGame" and post your design ideas and game releases there. As you release files, edit your first post to point to the most recent versions available.
Other people WILL reply to your post with their feedback and ideas, it's a fact that games that allow forumites to give their feedback do better in competitions. Please report any offensive comments to me for moderation. Consider releasing your source code, it helps us pinpoint problems that you might be having and benefits the community as a whole.
You may enter multiple games if you wish and can handle the workload.
Advice:
Remember that you don't need to actually develop on phones: We're only looking for good concepts and execution here, not instant phone support (although I will point people who want to have their games running on phone and PC at the same time towards Flash Lite). Emulate the phone experience on your PC, this means:
-Resolutions of 120x160, 240x240 or 240x360 (Yes, width is usually less than height).
-Only use the arrow keys, enter and shift + ctrl (mirrors the usual 4 directions + select and the two optional soft buttons) and the numeric keypad: 0-9 + * and #.
-Be aware that your players will want to play for short sessions, so allow for saving and think of other ways to accommodate them.
Interface design on phones can be tricky because you don't have tons of screen space to do it in. Try to use the affordances given by the phone - if you can, use the positions of keys on the keypad to mirror functionality as well as their numbers. Be aware that because we're targeting phones, your game can't come with a readme.txt, you need to get everything across in the game itself... Remember the lessons of Comp 20 (http://forums.tidemedia.co.za/nag/showthread.php?t=8376)!
Try to provide extras for your players. Things like achievements are rarely done in the mobile space, let's change that. Focus on replayability and giving your players something beyond what they'd usually get on a phone, don't worry too much about compatibility or hardware restrictions though, we don't want to stifle creativity beyond the constraints already mentioned.
...
Good luck and enjoy the competition. There might be some very interesting things coming out of this competition! Expect relevant announcements soonish ;)

Ooooh, what a great idea, dislekcia :)
I might be able to find my game that I made using the Java MIDP for my Honours course - of course I will likely convert it to Game Maker as actually making it for a mobile phone is kinda resource limiting.
Will give it a think... there is quite a lot you can do with a cellphone game.

Lol this is awesome I'd just come up with an idea for an adventure/action rpg (the word idea is used lightly, its more of a shiny little idea fragment that you find in the sands of sentience) game with
minimal control and the next comp is exactly that :)
woot :)
also who needs hope, hope's overrated I'll take sheer overwhelming power any day, failing that: determination, willpower and being on the good side, somehow that combo always wins. :)

Hahaha! After our little "State of the community" meeting at rAge, I'm not surprised to see this theme popping up. ;)
Yeah. Tricksy. Limited input and an emphasis on slower-paced, non-twitch gameplay are going to make this one interesting. I already have some ideas for a TBS game rattling around - we'll see what happens.
Good luck, everyone! :D
Completely epic. This is going to be awesome.
Ive been overly addicted to cellphone gaming lately, so I have a vast number of ideas to make use of.
"and on the wings of a dream, so far beyond reality, all alone in desperation now the time has come"
Best of luck to all. If I get what I need to done I might even port it to MIDP at some stage.

Can I throw in my Flash prototype of the =D game and develop from there? I've been looking at gearing it more towards a mobile control interface.
I'll probably have to make the screen smaller and do one or two other adjustments to fit comp criteria, but I think it would be a nice motivation to refine my work if I submit it here. :P
And for the record, I'd also LOVE to see a mobile Roach Toaster. Though less racist, kthx.

I don't think you'd have too much processing power for an off the shelf physics system on a phone, you might have to build your own for the exact situations in your game. But as far as prototyping goes, do whatever you can to help you prototype fast and then look at figuring out how to make it work on a phone setting after you've nailed something fun.
Are we allowed to have "How to play" menus within the game?
Yes, of course! Nothing in this competition is about taking away information, I just wanted to be sure people would realise that a readme in a cellphone game is going to get ignored, so design accordingly. I hope everyone has some sort of tutorial or how to play section to the their game!

Does mobile gaming allow for the pressing of multiple buttons at the same time? (For eg. This would be useful in situations such as a running jump in platformers)
I'd like to know these things because if I make something cool, I'm working in GM, I want to be able to port it to mobile with ease. I'd like to get the game dynamics right the first time, based on all the limitations I would encounter as if I were developing purely for mobile.
EDIT: Ahh... Sorry, after re-reading your first post I see that you mentioned multiple button pressing would be a problem.

The main reason that multiple concurrent presses is an issue is because of the way we tend to hold cellphones when we play on them. Try it yourself with your phone, imagine being forced to play a game with two hands, always jockeying for space on the phone face... Not cool, right?
Technically, there's no reason you can't do it. It's just really terrible interface design ;)

I would suggest making more of a "combo" system so not 5 and six but instead five then six.
This will still give you the same functionality and give the user the one hand playability.
I would also suggest keeping in mind that the type of game your creating will demand different attention from the player. So if its a fun simple puzzle game that is slow someone will easily be able to play with one hand not worrying about their response time eg: boxworld, and play it while they might be busy with something else knowing they can put the phone down at anytime etc. However if your game is a fast paced action game the players response time is crucial and if they start the game up to play it they will have this in mind so they probably not busy with much else and focusing all their attention to the game at that time.

You can do realtime networking via TCP/IP on phones, it just costs your players money - so it might not be a great idea to do deathmatch unless you're going for Bluetooth ;)
How do you think Mxit works?

Gaming online on phones Ive seen once or twice in the form of turn based tank games, but anything that would be data intensive is better off just being bluetooth happy.

Hey,
This great comp could be even beter ...
Have a couple of questions on the on how limited we are in using availible mobile technology, this could make the development much more interesting and still maintain the goal of the game.
These techonlogies will become common place in future phones, currently availible on the more 'hi-end' phones, HTC phones, iPhone, etc.
I also understand that these features might be difficult to implement on a pc, but if allowed by judges and pulled off in the implementation ... this could be someting awesome, showing everyone someting they will actually want to play on a cell phone(Provided you have the right phone, same as pc's min specs)!
Technologies proposed :
a.) Stylus or Finger
- where the user can use a mouse to navigate a menu as if using a stylus or his/her finger on the phone screen
- This will allow for more complex menu layout, are more time spend developing the game, rather than a menu system
b.) G-Sensor
- Tilting the phone in a certain direction forms a two axis control
- This is the same as using four directional buttons, just much more fun to play!
c.) GPS
- Simulated GPS system
d.) Virtual Keypad
- A popup area on the screen like a keyboard, allowing the user to click on the chars for typing
- A full computer style 'keyboard' for typing, ONLY text (eg. name, age, etc.), not for playing the game
My reasons for wanting these technologies included :
I am sure some people will say that introducing these features might defy the purpose of the comp, but I say it makes is much more interesting and challenging
Like it was mentioned, it's gameplay that you are after ... no amount of contols extra is going to replace great game play, we all know that!!
Introducing these technologies will move cell games beyond the realm of boring, please, don't limit us with technologies 10 years old
These techonlogies are the future of cell phones('pocket laptops?') ... we as developers need to push that frontier with our software ...
thanks .....

So, let me get this straight: You want to make developing a game for this competition even more complicated?
Uh. Ok, I guess. Go for it if you want to, but remember to keep the idea in your head of building a mobile game, not a blurred almost-PC experience.
It's not like games are simply flowing out of all our orifices and we're madly wishing that it were somehow harder to build something fun... Tell you what, build a "simple and limited" game first, then you can make it more complicated if that's what you feel the mechanic needs.

I am thinking of doing a Shoot em up type game - likely a reverse on-rails one.
Still very rough but, instead of having one button to fire and 4 for moving, your ship fires automatically and you just need to move around the obstacles.
This idea came after thinking how nice Asphalt Racer was on my Nokia because you just needed to steer, it handled the acceleration on its own
I'll get a game concept thread up later tonight, after my mission :p

yea I wasnt suggesting 3D necessarily, was saying that you might be able to get some ideas
from it regardless :)
but yea raptor had auto fire with you just having to steer and use specials if I remember correctly.
I used to enjoy it and would play something similar on a cellphone.
just a question do you plan to make it a top down shoot em up or one of those side scrolling ones ?

Would we be able to use functions such as "button press" and "button release"? (eg. like in worms, to power up a shot you press and hold in the button for power and release to shoot) Or would we have to do something along the lines of: press button once to start powering up and press it again to shoot.

Press and release should work fine :) And, if they don't on a phone, you've already designed the perfect solution!

I'm thinking of making an old school style RPG (similar in part to the earlier Final Fantasy on NES) but I don't think there is much time for a properly developed story and all of the maps and all before the deadline. Ok, you have a point that an RPG would take a huge amount of time. Fortunately, I decided to start anyway and while playing around with the grid based movement system, I was reminded of that awesome old game Supaplex. So new plan, I'm thinking of making Supaplex, just with a different skin and less levels.

What exactly happened to this competition? There was a thread about it needing mirrors at some point, but that was a while ago.

Fengol took me to task for slow judging earlier. So I let him judge this time around...

The judging results were sent to Dislekcia a couple of days ago. I apologise for the delay; judging is harder than it looks! I'll be more on the ball next time

Ditto. :) I've got a free week or so in early April. Or, at least, it looks free at the moment... (and it's funny how those fill up justlikethat).

No worries. I'm sure the judging was hard, especially because each games has its own charms that are not exactly easily comparable. I'm just really interested in the results because I think that my game was awesome. But still, they seem to have gotten lost or delayed at some point again.

Even I am eagerly awaiting the results, and I didn't even enter.

Methinks that dislekcia is fairly busy.
