Yes! DBP results are out aaaaaaaaaand...
4th: HurricaneX2: 3D action game based on Oriental mythology and themes.
3rd: Weapon of Choice Nonlinear side-scrolling action game, where each "life" gives you a different character with its own abilities.
2nd: Battle Tennis: Light hearted four-player arcade tennis game with Fighting game parody themes.
1st: Carnyvale Showtime: Ragdoll side-scrolling platformer where you must maneuver a trapeze artist (named Slinky) using death-defying stunts in a circus of DOOOOOOM.
More informationses on the DBP site (http://www.dreambuildplay.com/main/default.aspx).
So yeah. We didn't win anything this time, despite the utter awesome that was submitted. :( Still, the winning games do look like a ton of fun.

Unlucky guys, but don't get discouraged. Game.Dev submitted excelent games this year. Best of luck for the futures of Ultimate Quest and SpaceHack.

It's because of Tr00j, right?
If he hadn't made that racist game, Roach Toaster, the international community would take us more seriously.

You may not have won the contest, but you have definitely inspired a new generation of indie game design in SA! The standard that you guys put out was totally spectacular! So please, don't even be discouraged in the slightest. You. Guys. Are. AWESOME!

George Miller, a South African from Durban followed up last year's top 10 place (can't remember what exatly? 4th?) with a 6th place this year. I can't find a link or anything to it, but that's what he told me in an email, so we'll just have to take his word for it for now ;)

Gamasutra can haz videos (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=20888).
Y'know, while it's obvious why they don't do it for such large-scale competitions, it would be nice to know what the judges rated each game in terms of the criteria they specified. A report card for each game, as it were. It actually makes me realise just how much dislekcia spoils us with his mini-reviews. ;)

That is thoroughly awesome. I think you guys can feel fairly confident about slapping it up on XBLA now. ;)
Well, not that anything was stopping you before...
Congrats on top 20. :) SpaceHack was of the quality!

You know, comparing the amount of dev-time that most of the top 20 entries had (Biology battle was over 11 months, 4.5 devs) the average appears to be at least 6 months with at least 2 person teams, and the way that many of the entries had already been rejected by XBLA with feedback and just happened to decide to enter DBP for grins... Makes me wonder how on earth we even got in there: 2.5 months, no sound, not complete and a crappy intro section.
Currently my thinking is that nobody cared about SpaceHack until someone got the Pheonix Missiles and giggled so loud everyone else came to see WTH was up.

Gah!
There's a new section in the Community Games area on XBL: Contest Finalists. There are 9 games in there at the moment, if we had a polished build of SpaceHack, we could be part of that!
Grrr. Stupid funds.

The same guys that made last year's SA top 10 entry. They're based down in Durban, but seem to resist all attempts to get them to be active here... I have no idea why.
We've only ever had intermittent contact with them via dodgy email addys :(

Are they an actual game dev company like you? Or some, for lack of a better word, amateurs?

We're looking for funding at the moment... Until we secure some form of investment, we're slowly working on the game here and there inbetween paying projects.
Once we manage to sort this all out, I'm sure we'll write tutorials on how to survive in this strange world of business plans and financial projections ;) The goal is to bring SpaceHack (and other games) to Xbox Live Community Games, or even Live Arcade if we make it through the application.
