Hi everyone
Welcome to the new forums. Comp 15 is finally closed and we can now move with as few hassles as possible. The old forums will stay up for a bit, but only to help everyone get the content that they liked across to here. Game.Dev is always the worst hit forum in these wipes, but hopefully this will be the last one in a while ;)
The Game.Dev website (http://www.gamedotdev.co.za) is still the public face of most of our activity, with new competitions, events and articles being announced there first. Check it out and register so that we can start sending out monthly newsletters... Any ideas for improvement are as always welcome.
Our Games Showcase (http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/games/GameDotDev) over at The Great Games Experiment (http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com) is coming along nicely. Please sign up at the GGE and join the Game.Dev (http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/group/gamedotdev) group and post your games there using the GameDotDev tag. The GGE is great exposure and is something that you as aspiring and indie developers all need to support, just be careful that it doesn't suck up ALL of your time ;)
Remember: Make games, have fun and ask questions.

Hi
Just to inform you that the link on the Game.Dev website to the forum is broken. I presume because of the move.

The upcoming events are a bit out of date, Dis. But other than that I can find nothing wrong.
Can you let me join to Game.Dev? I'm Kosie van der Merwe.

I'm not exactly clued up on how GGE works, given that I visit about twice a month. How do you end up on that list? And what am I doing on there?! I don't remember doing anything special...

Mwahaha! Awesome :)
Gotta wonder how that list works... It's probably eldritch and confusing. I know that I was active there a little this morning, so that might have been it. Still, cool to see (and I'm totally saving that image).

Well, given my participation on the site, I'd say that their list code is thoroughly broken. OA's my only game on GGE, and it hasn't exactly been getting stellar reviews...
well, it will definitely promote the community!
i go onto GGE on the odd occassion, and i still cant join the game.dev group. but i hope soon to have something interesting to share there, and here aswell

Keep trying to join. I haven't received any requests for the group in a while... Sometimes it helps to just let the join page sit there and load all the stuff it needs to do in the background (I'm afraid the site wasn't really designed for us bandwidth-challenged South Africans).

Hi
Sorry, I though the tabs at the top and the menu links were the same. Anyway, when you click on the forum tab at the top of the page, it redirects you to another page. On that page the link is broken. I'll use the menu link in the future.

GGE is a sweet place(not as good as here but nice), When I have something good enough, I shall post it here for loyalty and then there after a while just for exposure. Good idea?

Post it everywhere you can! There's no reason that you should simply link something from a single place... I want everyone here to start using the GGE a lot more because it can be really great exposure. More exposure for one person who links the Game.Dev site or the group means more exposure and feedback for everyone else too :)

Ok then, makes sense, more exposure for a member = more exposure for the group = more exposure for s.a game dev = great success...

If you say "great success" like Borat, it makes it even more successful. :)

We're trying to work out a couple of sponsorships for the upcoming comps this year, unfortunately this has delayed the traditional February competition. We should start comp 22 in March, no matter what the sponsor status is ;)
In the mean time, why not challenge yourself to prototype a game idea a week and post them up here? That's always great fun!

You guys really ok with no prizes? I can start something in June if that's what you're keen on... The only problem is that quite a few people are in the middle of things like DreamBuildPlay, etc.
Fengol

I support the idea of another comp, even if there's no prize. It's not about the prize but about exercising your creative and dev muscles. I'm a poor entrant, but I do try to participate by fiddling with an idea and playing with other entries and offering suggestions and encouragement.
Gazza_N
28-05-2009, 03:50 PM
Can't speak for the others, but it's like I've said before - I've never entered for the prizes. I enter for the challenge and the experience - to see what I can do, and to learn from it.
Aval4nche
28-05-2009, 03:57 PM
Agreed. The whole point of these competitions is not to give away prizes anyway but to share ideas, gain experience and grow the dev community as a whole. The "prize" is in having someone enjoy your game or telling you how to improve it.
Bonezmann
28-05-2009, 04:22 PM
As said before, the prizes are extras. It's to gain experience and try new stuff in the idea of the challenge given.
edit: yes, we're keen. :)

Microsoft has started promoting local communities. I'm part of the "Community of Communities" for the community leaders so I am able add Game.Dev to their list of communities/user groups in South Africa.
I want to add Game.Dev to that list, who here has any objections to that?
The current list of communities that Microsoft knows about:
S.A. Architect
SA Game Dev
Tuks Linux User Group
ERDDUG - East Rand Developer and DBA User Group
Information Worker Cape Town
Information Worker Johannesburg
SA Developer .NET
South African online user group
East Rand Linux User Group
Gauteng Linux Users' Group
Linux Enthusiasts Association of Durban
Northern Cape Linux Users Group
Port Elizabeth Linux User Group
Pretoria Linux Users Group
UCT Linux Enthusiasts Group
Western Cape Linux User Group
South African Oracle User Group
SQL Server User Group
Drupal
Scrum User Group
Adobe User Group
Joomla
Java
South African Technology User Group
South Africa Endpoint Management & Virtualization User Group
CocoaHeads
PE .NET Developer User Group
Bloemfontein PHP User Group

Let's see what happens this time around... Any idea of what to expect? Should we prep for an influx of people that want to build XNA-based engines?

I love XNA, but to be completely honest 99% of the XNA devs are all just camping the XNA website and forum. I dont expect too much influx from local developers unfortunately
