At their panel at the Austin GDC, Mode 7's Paul Taylor (right) and Strategery's Jay Moore (left) talked building buzz and promoting independent games, stripping a complicated subject to its essentials: knowing the soul of your game and your company and communicating what sets you apart.

Moore, who was previously a founding partner of GarageGames, said straight off that "the worst games are done strictly for the money... If you don?t have the fire in your gut that says 'if I don?t make this game there?s nothing on the planet I want to do more,' you're not going to have the quality of content to differentiate yourself as an indie."

More at the link, if you're interested. Just some pointers on marketing games, some of them handy for the small-scale hobbyists out there.

I agree with what he says. Making games just for money shouldn’t be the way its done but has to be done as business's are nothing if they don’t make money.. Its now become a big sticking point in the industry.. Allowing for a full creative process where EVERYTHING is polished off to a AAA standard takes more time and money than most companies or investors will agree too.

The issue is that the investors aren’t usually gamers and don’t understand what games should or need to be in order to move forward and stop making the same old games over and over again just adding slightly better graphics and a couple of new features.. But us creative lot who actually make the games need an environment that understands the creative process in order to truly thrive... Its really killing the games industry right now and is a shame it took us 10 years to get to the commercialism of Hollywood where again the money men control everything and most films reflect that in their crapness..

Anyway enough ranting I could go on for a while on this subject, its something present in film, music and gaming and really grinds at me :o

I cant remember who said it (some indie) and I agree with him. "It is a good thing the mainstream is repetitive otherwise us indies wouldn't have anything to do." It is evident in film and music too.

HAH i agree with that,

thats totally tru in most aspects cos we are innovating and most times they are replicating with a story...
