View Full Version : Challenge: Game in a day!
So, tomorrow, 0ldt1m3r, Karuji and myself are going to be trying to build a game in a day (24 hours max). We have a few rules to keep it simple and to make it so we all work from the same resources. Im posting this here so people that want to try do this with us (you dont have to do it tomorrow, but within a 24 hour period).
We will be starting at about 8:30~9:30 am tomorrow, and hopefully be done by the same time on saturday.
The rules we will be working with are as follows:
We will be working in c# using XNA, and will have a base class we use as a template for everything we add to the game (so that we have a common setup for everything we add to the game).
We arent allowed to questions one another's method of solving a problem if it works, but we can give one another advice about the methods (if wanted/needed).
If we have a problem we can only use the sources of inormation listed below
We will organise out scehdule and such, and pick the game idea (each of us brings 1 or more ideas) when we start, so it is included in the 24 hours.
Sources of informtion/help:
Each other
The xna.com website
Twitter (any direct links from tweets are allowed) Twitter is an invaluable tool for getting information fast
MSDN website
IRC (shadowfire and/or efnet only, efnet has an xna channel)
Basically it is an excercise in us 3 wroking on a project quickly (with a deadline) and if it works well, we want to do this again in the near future.
Thoughts? Ideas? Going to try this aswell?

Woot! I think it's a great exercise in quick prototyping and team coordination. I'm keen to see what you guys come up with!
I think so to, hopefully something fun will come out of this tomorrow as well as a lot of learning. If we can pull it off while all together, we're going to try again some time these mid year holidays, but will try to do so over the interwebs completely.
In the end I hope this will lead to a winning formula, and become not only something regular (at the very least for us 3), but also something worth doing more often :P

Sweet idea!
Make sure you hashtag your tweets so that they're easy to catch. I suggest #24hgd (short), I'll be following and helping when I can :)
From now on I'll be tagging them #giad and #24hgd :D
Also, on a slightly unrelated point, perhaps if we make a decent game we can submit it to Make 'em Up (making a thread for that seperately)

Bear in mind that EGP has just announced a new theme (Casual Addiction (http://experimentalgameplay.com/)) which may be a great submission route too. :)
Shameless bump!
Question:
#24hgd #giad Question: How do we play songs? Sample code/snippet? Many thanks in advance (oldtimer needs to tweet more...) #xna

Definitely will, should be playable when I put all the parts together in 2~3 hours (no content or decent graphics though). But will keep everyone updated

Well, after a 24 hour stint with breaks in between we got through 12 hours of solid dev time. Despite oldtimer having to leave off after 6 hours (lack of time due to work) Karuji and myself missioned through code and bugs to get everything together and as many of the proposed features done before the deadline.
Our schedule looked like follows:
10:55am - Friday - Oldtimer and myself went through all the proposed game ideas and and decided that since each of the 3 of use wanted to make a JRPG style game we would go for a JRPG as our game.
11:00am - Friday - Karuji arrived and began putting together the menu
14:00pm - Friday - Lunch break and experimented with recording of music/sound effects
17:00pm - Friday - Called a break as we needed to relocate and have some time off from coding, Oldtimer went home to get a good nights rest for work.
21:30pm - Friday - Karuji and I carried on coding, putting the individual pieces together so we could see where to go
12:30am - Saturday - Decided to call it a night and get some sleep since all the pieces so far were put together
6:00am - Saturday - Karuji and I got up and made a to do list, and proceeded to try and complete the whole list before the deadline
10:30am - Saturday - Karuji and I added some last minute changes to what we're posting as our 24 hour produce, and got food and showers all round.
And here we are, this is the remnant of the todo list (excluding content writing):
NPC shops
Quest System
View Player Profile (stats, etc)
Combat system
mapsystem: add items to pick up
loading saved players
destructible terrain
player inputting their name for their save
MultiplayerNESSNESSNESS
EVENTS system enhancement
Skills: add skills
Add: items
Add: item drops to enemies
debug enemies and A*
And without further ado, the game as is without proper testing or any real content. (http://www.quickshare.co.za/files/w3mj6t5d/24hgd_release.zip.html)

Good effort guys! Every project brings you SO much understanding and working with others exposes you to techniques you might not have thought of before.
Before your next attempt, check out Riemers XNA Tutorial 2D Series (http://www.riemers.net/eng/Tutorials/XNA/Csharp/series2d.php). I personally haven't played with it, but I did do his 3D Series and it was awesome.
Looking forward to seeing more in the next project!
