Riddle Me This (Bad working title)
I started this a couple of days ago. Basically it's a riddle/brainteaser made with Game Maker.
While still very new, it's somewhat playable.
At the moment only the first Tier is done. There are 10 puzzles per tier.
I tried to make the puzzles more difficult as the player progress as accurately as possible.

I would really appreciate any feedback on this.
Thanks.

Right downloaded and played.
I suck at these games sometimes :p Can I have a hint for Level 6? I have tried pressing every letter on my keyboard but none of them make the thing point east
So far, I like it - it is simple and easy to understand.
I am guessing you took your inspiration from the variety of puzzle games online.
Glad to see you sorted out your save game problem.
Hmm, comments... let's see,
I want more...er...if I get to the end
Maybe, just maybe, the ability to get a more comprehensive hint - ie you have 3 opportunities to get some help
Music is great, minimal but adds to the experience
Reward the player?
Apart from that, ja, please keep it coming :)

Thanks, guys!
Ooh, a nice one. I'm at T1L6. Can't get that damn arrow to point east...
Can I have a hint for Level 6?
I find that quite strange. Initially, that puzzle was at level 2 (I surmise it's because of the fact that I knew the answer before I knew the question). But a number of people got stuck there. So I kept bumping it up to level 3, 4, 5, etc.
The puzzle works in a sum function, meaning that you can press multiple keys at the same time to get the angle values to add up to a certain rotation.
Edit: Also, this one isn't random or guesswork, the answer is actually a clever constant.
I like the idea of a second clue, since the puzzles are going to get much more difficult.
So I'll get to that soon.
The music is actually my very first song I created with FL Studio a few days ago. It was merely a placeholder sound, just to fill some of that background emptiness. I'm glad to hear a positive response to it, though. Might even mean I'm going in the right direction! :D
The reward part is something I did consider. However, I couldn't think of something substantial enough. At the moment it feels really bland and unexciting when figuring out a puzzle and going to the next one.
Again, thanks.
I honestly appreciate any comments and critisms.

Methinks there are multiple combinations....
I press H then Z but it does not register as a 'success'
For the reward system, perhaps use that 'additional hints' as an incentive
i.e. if you solve 5 problems you get one 'Gimme me a beta hint plzktnx' token

Does the arrow face exactly east? I knew about having to combine keys, just don't know which... I'm going to try again...
I DID IT!!! clever, very clever...
edit:
If I may ask: how do I move Timmy
edit:
Oh, VERY clever
edit: don't understand T1L8

It doesn't register as a success, mostly because it isn't. xP
I took great care in making it near impossible to get the correct answer by accident.
Technically, it might still be possible, but very unlikely.
I tested what you said, and it actually equals 277, 7 degrees over east.
Another clue: It's useless trying random key combinations.
Good idea about the reward system. It shouldn't be too hard to implement.
Thanks a lot.
Bonezmann: Hahah. That's awesome. Some people that tested it took more than an hour to figure those out.

I'm at T1L10 now. Do you want a numeric or alphabetic answer?
Kensei, it's easier than you think...

Can't answer that one, unfortunately, since that's partly what the puzzle is about.
Edit: Unless you want me to give you the answer.

Please no, but a clue would help. :)

Yup, I got it - lol very clever that :)
SplaT, perhaps think of drawing a line or something to show exactly where East is. Something more visual to show that my combination wasn't actually East.
Secondly, perhaps make the sheep move a little slower, they were hard to see :)
Edit: Done!
I love the puzzles, SplaT I want more now :p
And he is right, a clue will spoil it

Odd.
Kensei seem to have done it.
If you are absolutely sure you have the right answer, then there must be a problem.
All I can think of is perhaps if the keyboard string isn't empty.
You can try holding in backspace to remove any possible spaces or something and try inputting your answer again.
Dammit T1L9 has got me at the moment...
Don't quite know the symbols and their meanings...

I just had a GTalk chat with Karuji, seems something is up with your riddle SplaT.
I got 'If you are twenty-one and I am nine, how many sheep?'
But he got 'If you are thirteen and I am nine, how many sheep?'
It might explain why some are stuck. Those who ARE stuck can PM me, I can give you a massive hint :p

I dunno if you needed to slow it down, I just did an ALT-printscreen and counted them all that way ;)
I like the game and I like your method of thinking around these puzzles, keep it up!
It might be a good idea to have some "close, but not quite" messages in T1L10, like when you go "Well that's an O shape, so 15 then" or "Sheep ends in P, so that's 16!", etc. We had quite a lot of those possibles come up.

Heh, that could be the second clue idea Kensei mentioned:
"Take a screenshot"
Meaning I could have made it even faster.
:o
I actually thought about that last suggestion, but doesn't it give the same impression when the player doesn't continue? I'm adding little farting sounds when the player enters a wrong answer. Edit: Such a classy solution now that I'm hearing it....
>_o
I have a question about level 9.
Too easy/too difficult/too accidentally-clicked-when-it-was-coincidentally-in-the-correct-rotation?
I have heard barely a peep about that particular one. (except from xcal)
Anyway, thanks to everybody for playing and commenting.
I learned a surprising amount just by reading comments.

If level 9 is the one with the stones, I accidentally got the right answer by just randomly clicking :D
I took the screenshot, counted the sheep. Answer is wrong
Karuji
12-02-2009, 07:35 PM
The Stones was rather random
At first i thought it might have to do with a rising sun. Since the sun rises in the east i matched up the sun and E eventaully i sorta guessed that it was what it was. After that I realised why it was that

These "accidental solved" cases are probably okay in the first tier. Since from the second tier onwards, the plan is to make the puzzles a bit deeper than just clicking a few things.
The lightbulbs puzzle had the same 'Just-click-until-something-happens' mechanic, which I failed to avoid.
Bonezmann: Maybe read the clue again.

Splat, dnt use direct links to mediafire thats not how its intented, and the keys expire
The key you provided for file download was invalid. This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on Mediafire. This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or Mediafire.

Perhaps we can start building Tier 2 as a community project - the interface seems simple enough, if SplaT gives us his existing GM file we can update it as needed.
Everybody start dancing researching riddles :)

I have a problem at T1L6, I managed to get a solution I think, but it isn't registering:
Pressing Z D U O and P tells me the arrow is pointing at 270 degrees, but the game isn't continuing. Also some of the values add up wrong (I think) say 5 + 95 = 101... hidden decimals? does that mean my 270 answer was 270.X?

Yes, hidden decimals. If it's saying 270 and not continuing, it's eg. 270.5, which is not correct. ;)
This was something I tried to avoid, but initially I thought it would not be a problem and I didn't pay any more attention to it.
The hidden decimals were only a precaution to keep the player continuing by accident.

Ok I get it, thanks... I don't know if the puzzle is meant to be solvable this way but:
You can check all the keys that have decimals (by checking if their sum makes sense) and just use the keys that do not have decimals
It's a good game btw, google the impossible quiz... (can't remember site), it's something very similar but more random, (for inspiration) :)

Why, thank you.
But like I said, I can't work on this anymore. As I'm typing here, I'm actually behind on my work already. :(
Also, finding the answer to Puzzle 6 by sum elimination is really thinking in the wrong direction. If someone resorts to that, they don't really understand the puzzle.
I wanted the player to think instead of having to press random buttons until something happens. Some people got it instantly and others got stuck there, which I find curious.
The latest version included a hint system too, which hopefully might make it easier.

it's actually pretty easy, you know?No it's not pretty easy as the game doesn't accept E+S+T, never mind E+A+S+T on my machine. The following work:
A+E
A+S
A+T
E+S
E+T
S+T
A+E+S
A+E+T
A+S+T
E+S+T does not work.
S+E+T does not work.
T+E+S does not work.
T+S+E does not work.
BTW-The list tag doesn't work in spoiler mode. Bug or by design?

Well, apparently it is.
Many apologies.
I didn't think the 3 key limitation still exists on some keyboards.
AndrewJ

Then can you send me one that is for the level after this? If you need my .sav I'll PM/email it to you.
I thought the three key limit was OS related. It could be motherboard related too I suppose...
Edit: Orrrrrrr maybe just put a link for us to download it from since multiple people will probably ask you for it.
