I have no programing experience at all but i do have a cool game idea. a fifa styled hockey game and not an nhl game a real hockey game. it doesn't need to be graphiclly good just having a hockey game would be awsome. it really saddens me that this great game has no video games when so many smaller sport do. any help with my dream game would be greatly appreciated

Only someone from Canada could ask that!

Proper Hockey doesn;t have anything to do with Ice! :)

He did mention the NHL, which uneducated cretins like yourself would do well on brushing up on ;)

Heya

I'm not trying to be a wet blanket on your ideas, but the easiest (and probably best) way to get a game like this going is to start working on it yourself. You don't have to be a programmer to make something cool if you pick the right tools, so I'd suggest harnessing your passion for the game you want to make and spending a few days playing with Game Maker (http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker). Do the tutorials (http://www.yoyogames.com/make/tutorials) and see if you've got any ideas. We'll always be here to help and answer any questions you might have...

Of course, you might get lucky and our resident sports game pro (http://forums.tidemedia.co.za/nag/showthread.php?t=1341), Kurtkz might get inspired by your idea and start working on a field-hockey game with you. You never know ;)

Hehe, thanks for the kind words D :)

@cr@zydude: I wouldn't mind working on a field hockey game in a few months or so. Kinda swamped by work at the moment. If you wanted we could collaborate on the design document in the meantime. Lemme know :)

No thanks needed: When you're good, you're good and I'll say so :)

Also, like I said: You never know what'll happen when you throw an idea out there.

you must create the objects yourself and try the tutorials first

okay firstly:

try the help, do the tuturials then ask again

secondly:
'sprites' are images, you create an image there that your program can use, you can create an image from scratch or load your own

RTFM. do the tutorials. kthnx

Woah... That was a little extreme, don't you think? 0_o

cr@zydude: As tempting as it is to charge in all guns blazing, it would be wise to look through the help and find out how the program works first. The Game Maker help is awesome, and anything you need to know is in there.
I would also recommend that you run through the tutorials over at the Game.Dev site (http://www.gamedotdev.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=4&id=16&Itemid=29). They'll help you get up and running through some practical exercises, and trust me - the best way to learn is by doing.

We've also been running some Game Maker tutorials in Dev.Mag (http://www.devmag.org.za) for the last couple of months. Issues 14 and 15 have great GM tutorials in them just for beginners like you, so those should help.

Then there are the formal tutorials over at yoyogames. Dislekcia's already pointed those out to you.

Be aware that making games isn't something you learn in five minutes, but with some work you'll start seeing results. :)

No, dont take it all wrong despite some failure opinion :D

Im pretty certain every one here is here to help... if they arent they should reevaluate their position on the forums at all...

Let us know how it goes? and dont give up! nobody said making games was the easiest thing :)

Let me jump in with the mainstream and take a swim . Use the tutorials . I remember GM having a nice little tutorial on making a game where you have to click on little faces. Do yourself a favour it works trust me !

cr@zydude

just finished the tutorial made the game where you click on the bouncing ball. i even tries to make some changes to randomise the balls movement not quite working yet but i'll definitky keep trying. the program is great but i still feel the need for instant gratification, *twitch* must make hockey game now *twitch* *twitch*

Use boxes.

I'm serious... Don't worry about art right now, use boxes/blobs/hand-drawn scribbles as much as possible and focus on game logic and making it playable.

If it's fun with crap graphics, it'll be awesome with good ones. Plus it's easier to find graphics help when you have something that artists can't stop playing and keep thinking "Hey, I could totally make this look better".

Correct dislekcia, way easier to find artists willing to add graphics to a game. I hate it when I create something for a game, and the production stops the game dies and none of the programmers are working on it anymore...

Sorta puts you in a "mmm I don't think I'll be doing that again" mood. Anyway I worked with a couple of teams now on animations that will never see the light of day in terms of the games, some of them were already like 50-60% complete others in start up phase, one was virtually done... just a few tweaks here and there, and still I am waiting for feedback from them. :|

If you make an executable of the hockey game on your machine, can he run that? If not, then it's something to do with either his machine and GM not finding functionality you're using (surfaces, etc) or his GM is running unregistered and yours is...
