Hi all,
I haven't been around for ages I know, but I wanted to know if their is any group projects happening, specifically something that needs some 3D assets, where I can possibly lend a hand?
Anyone busy with some project that needs a box here, and a crate their, or maybe a gun/car/spaceship/ninja/pirate/calculator/pencil/toilet modelled, give me a shout.
May see a few of you at rage as well, will be going for the day on Saterday.
Cheers
(P.S. even though I haven't been around for years, i have used Game Maker to make a wicket Coil designing program for my company. I now design and manufacture industrial electromagnets for various applications :) )

Had the same idea this morning. Good afternoon forum peoples i'm new here.
Would also like to offer up my services (free of charge) should any game developer require 3D assets.
Sorry to Himmler for piggy-backing off his thread (i'm not allowed to start any threads of my own yet - well that's what it said when I registered).
Small question (really tiny) (I know, I know, new questions go into new threads - If I could I would) Are there any game development companies in SA?

Is I-Imagine still around? I remember they used to hire 3D artists. Actually, I think one of my current colleagues used to work there as an artist. As far as 3D artist jobs go, there are far more job opportunities abroad than in SA, especially in terms of games.

I-Image and Luma are around in Johannesburg. QCF is officially based in Cape Town I think.
If I can put in a request for some models I'm looking for 2 fighter jets in .FBX format for game idea I'm toying with and I'm struggling to find anything free on the internet

The best way to earn a living as a 3D artist in SA is as a freelancer though. Unfortunately artists are not particularly respected by SA studios and are paid unacceptably low salaries. Considering what a specialised craft 3D is, 3D artists should earn a good living, but instead studios overwork and underpay their artists horribly.
And please guys, don't work for free. Ever. It cheapens the craft and sets a precedent to others that you don't really value your own skills and can be exploited. Spec work is a huge issue for this industry so please don't do it.

As far as I know, they've always been sorta "around", just not doing all that much in terms of developing games that we can buy. Until now, at least. They've recently released a football quiz (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/f/footballgeniusxbla/) game for XBLA; I guess in an effort to get some cash in the bank before moving onto bigger things.

I agree with you completely but there is method behind the madness :-) I'm currently working for a media company doing architectural renderings for property development. It pays the bills but my dream has always been to work on Games. What i'm hoping to gain from this is the opportunity to hone my skills in that area and to collaborate with local game developers (My offer is aimed at the guys/gals working out of their garage trying to get an idea off the ground - I should have been more specific). At least that way I can claim to have some experience... something to add to the resume.
The reason i'm looking for local game companies is to apply for a job.

Fengol, send me a pm with your email address and a description or names of the types of fighter jets you are looking for and we'll take it from there.

Once again my apologies to Himmler for hi-jacking his Thread. Hopefully the two of us can work together on something in the very near future.

Go to a site like game-artist.net and team up with some people on game mod projects. There are always loads of mods on the go that need artists.
