We had some really strong content last issue, and I'd like to keep it going, particularly as we head closer to rAge which is always a special (read: frantic) time. I may decide to hold back some of this month's content for that issue, depending on how much we get. It's also probably a good time to start getting some suggestions for that one; it's only one monthaway, after all, and we're going to have one week less to work on it.

Deadline this month is 24 August.

News:

Whenever/wherever it comes up.

Opinion:

I'm not all that sure about this one anymore, frankly. I'll still accept them, but I'm going to be a little pickier about what goes here, if anything. However, if you think you have something interesting to say, do send it in.

Feature:

Luma interview on Blur (Fuzzy)
Multiwinia preview? (Tr00jg)

Reviews:

Braid is the obvious choice this month. I'll hopefully get it myself very soon, but I'd like whoever owns it to let me know so I can be certain we'll have it.
Any local Game.Dev production - We're going to try to do this every month from now on. (LionsInnards - Ask me if you want some suggestions, otherwise pick one (http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/games/GameDotDev) at random)
Lost Garden
Other neato games that turn up. Check back here for suggestions.

Development:

Fair use laws (http://www.scummbar.com/resources/articles/index.php?newssniffer=readarticle&article=7).
Collision detection. It's about time we had a good piece detailing common collision detection methods, comparing precision vs effeciency and detailing which to use and when. Perhaps split into 2 parts; one for 2D, and another expanded for 3D.
Blender tutorial (Chippit)
Google App Engine pt. 2(Herman Tulleken)
School Days (Fuzzy?)

Tailpiece:

I'm at a bit of a loss about what to put here this month, to be honest. Any suggestions?

Don't know if it's the sort of thing that would fit in but I think I gave you that piece on the action genre, if you want to use it. I'll take a look at those games when I get home.

The school days is still building up :) ill make that one happen and contact all the other parties on input(locally and internationally),
I find the collision detection one interesting as its something i have been researching a lot on lately due to SCR and the need for physics in XNA and what not. Unless someone else jumps at it.

The irrlicht series , do you want to hold it off still or should i tidy up the latest article (part 4)..

irrlicht would be great too, but focus on the feature and the education one first at least.

Otherwise, take whatever you can handle, really.

For the tailpiece, perhaps a recap of the stuff we've done at rAge over the past coupla years? It would make for a good lead-in to the rAge issue.

Unfortunately, I'll have nothing to contribute to the mag this month. I'd totally do the Braid review, if I'd played it. Sadly, this PC owner has to wait until December. :(

A feature on mammaries, and what makes them so gosh-darn fun.

I think an article on fair use law is pretty important, so I'll snatch it up if nobody else does.

I read through the Monkey Island piece with great interest when I first saw it -- however, I think that it would be useful to expand this article's scope to incorporate habits such as crediting artists, learning to read the small text, and blah.

Also, I like Q's suggestion, but I do have an alternative idea: considering the rapidly approaching DreamBuildPlay thing and Game.Dev's involvement in such (and the fact that you mentioned it in 24's editorial) do you maybe wanna have a bunch of stuff surrounding something like that for the tailpiece? Or something. I reckon it would be a good idea to work with.

Thirdly, I want to see more sound stuff in Dev.Mag. I don't know how many people agree with me on this, but if there's sufficient interest then somebody who is adept with sound engineering should take a look at it. Or I could sputter about and churn out one or two more pieces. Maybe do some research on how they make sound in "the industry", or explain the concept of foley.

Anyway, there's some more ideas.

A DBP tailpiece is an excellent idea. Covering what happened in last year's competition would be a great way to lead up to the next issue. A look at the winners, perhaps, or what has changed in XNA and the competition itself since then.

I also completely agree on the sound topic. I know I tend to ignore sound myself, but it really is important for a proper, complete presentation package. We haven't had much in the way of sound-related content either, so it's a gap that needs filling, I feel.

Has anything been done on Garage Games yet? If not, I'll do a profile on them (history, games, Torque, Instant Action, etc.).

That would be excellent. We covered InstantAction last month, but that's about it.

Cool. Once I'm back at work on Monday I'll dl #24 to check out what was done and go from there.

There are also 2 "tech" articles that I'd like to write, but probably wont have time this month, so they'll either be in next month or staggered. I just need to go over all of the Dev.Mag's to make sure that I'm not regurgitating anything...

Next month would be great for something like those tech articles in any case. I'd like to have as much professional class content for that issue as I can get.

yea, that would be great. D:

I'd just like to add my penny's worth and say that Nandrew's suggestion of audio creation articles does sound (see wut i did thar) important. Any sound engineers stuck in this section of the intertubes?

I'm onto Multiwinia!

How long should it be?

Chippit
14-08-2008, 06:07 PM
~1000 words, please. What exactly was in the preview pack?

Multiwinia preview code, which basically had 2 (or 3) skirmish games in it. You can't play against another human player.

I'll most likely approach Multiwinia without the assumption that someone has played Darwinia.

And there was a random card with darwinian drawings on it, and a hard spongey blue darwinian about the size of a hand.

I'm a bit busy this week. Will hopefully get it done by Sunday.

Right, just the customary Looming Deadline Reminder?. I'd like to not have to delay this one too much since we're going to have to stretch things a little to get 26 done in time for rAge. Hustle, yo!

I'll actually get the 26 prep thread up soon after this deadline. We won't have the leisure of much extra time in between these two issues, unfortunately. Expect that one near the beginning of next month.
