Hi guys. Does anyone know of any sites offering free .com domains? I'm currently using a .co.cc domain for my site but I'm working on a site to assist and develop the students at campus, and I would prefer to have a .com domain for it. I appreciate your help. Thanks

It is unlikely you'll find free .com domain hosting.

Yeah, Miktar's right. In fact, I'm not sure such things exist anywhere at all. A .com's a pretty serious investment.

.com domains are about R80 a year. They are never free. .nets are a little cheaper (R60 or so), same with .co.za whereas I think .info and .ws are cheaper still.

They are so cheap you could just as well just register it and be done with. Like BlackShipsFillt mentioned, R80 per year, thats not too much. I have hosting at http://www.godaddy.com/ and I think they actually give you a free .com domain when you register for hosting there, and if you want to register a .com it is around $11 for a year.

if you go through our local domain registrar(http://co.za/), you can get domains very cheaply, R50 p/a(and they are owned by you, unlike some sites that register it under thier name..., but the downside is you need nameservers etc, but its really quick to do, and they are local, so you don't have currency problems), you can probably do the same for other domains(I hate going through other sites :P). also check out http://www.za.net/ if you want really free domains(they are *.za.net or *.za.org though)

Also, and I don't mean to cause alarm, but .coms are being bought quite rapidly. I had the experience once of deciding on an available name for myself, but only getting round to registering a week later and then discovering that someone had beaten me to it.

Thanks guys. I think I rather buy the .com domain. This site is non profitable but I think it will make more sense to have a .com in the long run. I appreciate the help. Be sure to vist the site in a few weeks ;)

Exact same thing happened to me once. I was checking if the domain was avail, and it was, but did not register yet. Week later it was grabbed. Haha, just checked, it is still parked, 6 years later!!

Guess what!?! The domain I want is taken :( and every good variation I could find was taken. I think I'm going to have to settle for a .net or even a .co.za(which I'm trying to keep away from). btw. I wanted nibble.com

Edit...

I just bought nibblez.net, best I could get. Anyone know how long it takes to be active on average? My .co.cc domain was almost instantanious.

Assuming the domain has been pointed to your web host, DNS entries (which map domains to IP addresses) take around 24 hours to propogate around the internet, possibly longer if the Chinese are attacking.

Thanks E.T. There was a problem with the site so it's only going to be active next week.
