So... Just as the title reads, what is in the pipeline for Game.Dev 2008? Its been quite silent-ish after rAge.
Apart from finishing WIP's, I have one or two small ideas I might elaborate on if I get time.
This year time is going to be my biggest issue

Freeware sprites are fully encouraged! And awesome choice, Tyrian rocked immensely :)
I've been really impressed with DanC's stuff that he's been putting online.

Good question :)
I've just gotten back from holiday, so I'll be spending some time on what's happening with Game.Dev soon.
What would everyone like to see? Hotlabs and DevLans are good ideas, but what else? There's also a much needed return to the regularly scheduled competitions...
The only problem is that I'm going to be hectically busy over the next 4 months. So I might need a lot of help with events until then... We'll see.

Ill get involved, i know my track record sucks but watch this space.
I would also like to sponsor prizes this year, it should make for some fun.
My aims : finish SCR by mid feb with multiplayer (actually hooked in a guy who is a legend network programmer, he is gonna teach me lots i can just tell lol) and then ill be updating that on the side. I plan to release v1 of my BIG game by the end of the year, and i plan to run a few courses/labs as well, hopefullly with game dev guys too. Ill try attend all the hot labs and dev lans, last year caught me out horribly.
Also, im sure ill be finishing my book im writing :) more on this to come..
What wud be cool to see : Competitions that span more then just prize money maybe? something im working on as well is getting sponsors...such as the "big" competition can have Visual studio subscription as a prize, and stuff like that? maybe winning legal software is more motivation to some then what money calls out on buying useless accessories for the pC :P
Also i think we shud see more teamwork on games, its one thing i would suggest a large amount is team. Especially with the "smaller" games, to learn to work in a team can be invaluable when hitting a project like a full 3d game. Learning to understand the dynamics of how to approach code sharing, and using the team to its potential is something i was writing an article for next dev.mag, hoping to spark some more joint efforts , making even "bigger" games TOGETHER will boost the community profile as well as the overall fun of the game creation process.
Hmm, ill come back when iv thought about what else wud be radness :P

It would be awesome to have some regular devlans this year.
I'm moving down to Durban this year and I know Skinklizzard is as well, plus I remember Cinimod being very interested in having a devlan so we should be able to round up enough people to have a devlan in Durban. Just need to find a venue for it, if anybody knows of something can they start a thread for it or PM me :)

Not sure how much I'll be in Durban this year, but I'll naturally be open to attending a Devlan if I happen to be in the neighbourhood. :)

So much plans for this year with regards to game development, I would share the specifics but there's just so much and some projects are going to have to wait. I'm all for DevLans if I have the time.

Um, well I know that some at SAGameDev is seriously considering organizing an event for the weekend before schools open during the easter holiday, so what? a bout 3 months from now.
Its probably going to be called "Optimize", like the demoscene event of old. Going on how these things are, it is probably closer to a 2-day DevLan, but where you are expected to do the majority of the work before the time, and the second day is spent where the creators enter their creations (preferably a game or demo of sorts, but can be anything) and present it to the crowd.
How I remember the few I went to it is quite nice. As I remember it is encouraged to work in teams. People can enter anything they want, a piece of art, and animation, music, a game, etc...

If I may ask: a "devlan"? Is that a LAN at which people develop, rather than the (presumably) more common activity of playing games?

Yes,DevLan's are were the LAN members do development of a sort.
Kind of like a new-idea thing or a sanity-check against other people.
Games tend to only be played at the end of those LAN's, and often it is the dev's own games.

haha , a devlan is amusing way of "spending" coffee and "working out" all weekend

Think of it more as an informal BYOC Comp-sci/Ludology lesson than a LAN. Generally a DevLAN will focus on increasing understanding of a particular facet of game dev. For example, the last one that was held in Joburg covered the theory behind AI. A person in the know (normally Dis) will deliver a lecture on the subject, and then people will have a go at implementing it under the watchful gaze of people who know what they're talking about, which is where the BYOC comes in. It's also a great chance to meet fellow Game.Dev-ites, and hatch plots to duct-tape Dislekcia to his chair.
Basically, DevLANs are made of fun and ed-ja-kay-shun.

As yet, I remain firmly un-duct-taped to anything, muhahaha! :)
But yeah, DevLans are lans for game development. Usually there will be a set challenge or some sort of goal for people to reach during the time, think of it as a directed messing around session. We're long overdue for another, actually...

Aah, fair enough, and thanks all! ^_^
DevLANs do sound interesting - hopefully either I will be near to one or one will happen near to me at some stage. ^_^

We've had anything from 10 to 5 people at DevLans over the years. It depends on when and where they're held. The Hotlabs in Durban regularly got 20 or so people and for the special event that Miktar and I flew down to talk at, we had around 30 people come back for two days of ranting and developing :)
Food and drink is usually Fengol's baby (he's great at that), but it's pretty much a standard LAN with more development, so you bring what you want.
