So you have a great game/idea and you get to the point where you are tired of referring to it as "That game where you..." so you need to name it. How do you guys do it? Is there a specific trick or just call it whatever comes to mind?

I think i work on a story and such before the game gets moving, and soon after i end up playing the prototypes i get a name that usually sounds ok, asking a few people around i usually get feedback about whether it sucks or not...

Also its more about relevance. Calling a game star fighter because its a fighting game with japanese characters it doesnt sound relevant, and is misleading to genre and game style.Unless its for a reason u aim at naming the game relative to what you do in the game, what you become in the game , what the game entails and who you are relating to the game.

Star force fighter, that sounds like a sci fi game, where as freelancer is the same kinda game, its just aimed at a broader gamer base then just star wars and space tv show freaks. Its also a large personal input in my view. If i have a connection to the game (wihch shud be in general) i call it something relevant and "clever", maybe a play on lettering, a play on words, hidden concepts, uncertainty of word meanings, ambiguity stuff that tricks you.

If its a thrashing slash game, pick up a thesaurus and look up words like "hurt" "damage" "debris" stuff that relates to smashing, and using those words to build a name, it can be quite useful

I don't know, actually. I have no specific process or trick when it comes to naming games. They normally just come to me by themselves, although I'll admit that some are more stubborn than others.

Same :D

I just explain the game idea to someone and then see what they call it when they have to refer to it later ;) Gazza's damn good at coming up with names.

Usually develop a prototype and name it something related to the nature of the game then let other people choose a good name after playing the prototype and learning the concept and theme.

haha, good question :)
I start off with a "codename" and keep telling myself it will change.. eventually I end up using the codename. It might sound like a stupid name for the game but if you use it long enough it just grows on the game :p

Through the study of randomology .I always look for the most random word that comes to mind then take it from there:p eg.meep-meeps

i like random...usually i use this approach for random games tho. you dont get a "serious game" wiht funny content with a name thats randomly weird. tho i love random, can you imagine playing bioshock were it called "floppy-party" or something :> lol, tho thats a way diff style, i like the name meep meeps.

Im not sure who knows the name of my "real game im workiing on" the hacking simulator... but that took me like 2 months to choose a name that sounded cool and fits the image of the game. I took the word OWN and made a play on that. cos its an ownage game (lol). So i came up with overnet : world network. "The new internet has come". Problem is i say overnet on irc, in a magazine, and even on some weird sites. so the name has been revised... lol not sure yet of which ill choose.

It's pretty simple (http://dukenukem.typepad.com/game_matters/2004/02/the_name_of_the.html).

Ta-dah! Scott Miller and 3D Realms are useful after all!

Nah, I'm joking. I have a lot of respect for those guys.

Very nice link. I think that'll pretty much answer your question, Agrajag!
