While looking into lockless algorithms for game engine design, I cam across a very nice section (http://www.valvesoftware.com/company/publications.html) on vavle's site, listing almost all their GDC presentations.
although its mainly filled with technical-ish papers, it also contains more broad things, such as the development process employed for HL2, something any designer can benefit from reading, as well as presentations on gameplay etc. they are also nice enough to keep everything as pdf :)
