Yes I'm still alive, just been really busy lately :(
Anyway I wanted to see if we can get a DevLAN going in Durban sometime.
Firstly how many of you would be interested just to make sure there's enough of us to make it worth it. Also even if you have never coded before you will be more than welcome to come along and learn.
Secondly the venue, I've been looking into places and haven't had too much luck. There's a small chance we could get the Computer Science seminar room at UKZN but it's still a maybe at this point in time. If anyone knows of a venue or would even be able to offer their house or garage it would be much appreciated :)
Then the date, I was thinking about either December or January all dependent on when everyone can make it.
Looking forward to your responses.
Update:
Venue secured! Just need to pick a date...

Good idea! Durbs has been really quiet since Bunabis left IT Intellect...
If you need any help convincing venue types or need support info, give me a shout Insomniac.

Well as you know I will be there.
If any non coding types are planning on coming to learn how to make games
let us know where you'd like to start e.g. Top down shooter/ racer / other top down thingy,
platformer, other small not elderscrolls 15 the legend of nerevar revisted game.
for now its likely that it'll mostly be game maker as that's pretty much all I know well enough
besides tp7 and that's ancient.
unless rick feels like teaching what he's been studying.

Turbo Pascal 7 oh the memories :p
I'm tempted to do something involving XNA seeing as my Hons project next year is most likely going to involve it but GM would probably be a better idea. We can look at maybe working on Comp 21 entries or just picking a random topic on the day. It will be better to decide closer to the time once we have a better gauge on who else is coming.

Uhh I don't think non coders want to learn about computational complexity theory ;)

Bumpity bump...Are there no other Game.Dev'ers (or aspiring Game.Dev'ers) in Durban who are interested? So far all we have is myself, SkinkLizzard and possibly Inifinitely Blue.
Also if you might be interested but have some questions don't hesitate to send me a message and ask :)

Hm. I may be able to put in a show of face if there's a Durban event over the holidays. We'll see how it goes ;)

DevLANs aren't show-off sessions, you have to get involved too :)

I would pull in to get some help with the basics. If I am around (and I will be in late December) then count me in.

Yay! \o/ I'm glad to see so many of you are interested.
Now the next hurdle is the venue. If any of you know of a potential place please look into it and let me know.

I may attend in a different capacity - amateur 'journalism', just chronicling the event, sort of.
I can't code and I'm past my LAN days, lugging equipment around (I'm an old, old... old twenty-something - frumple).

You don't happen to be the same Oliver from el33tonline? It would be awesome if you could give us some coverage :)
Also you don't need to be a coder to use Game Maker btw ;) You can try and just observe but I'm sure the game-dev bug will bite.
Venue wise I haven't heard anything yet but my exams are finally over so I can into hyper-finde a venue mode now. I will post as soon as I find something and please if anybody knows of something let me know.

Insomniac, maybe you could try some of the schools, ask if we could borrow their labs for a while.

Yeah, that's me. Depending on date/venue, I'll be able to get over there to irritate and obfuscate.

How many people are you expecting for this devLAN? I could keep a lookout for a venue here in Durbz.

Good news!!! Venue has been secured. We will be using the Computer Science seminar room at the Westville campus of UKZN.
Now we need to sort out a date. Can everybody say what Saturday's they are available and then we have to make sure it fits in with the lecturer who has offered to come in and help out with the venue and event.
I'm so glad things are finally coming together :)

After discussing it with a few others having it in January will probably be best.
I was thinking of making it the 17th Jan, so if you have any major objections to that shout. I'll make a full post with directions and schedule in the next few days.

I might be Sweden mid Jan for work, so I might not be able to make it then :(

I used to work with Burnabis @ IT Intellect - I remember when you okes came down the last time! I was a trainer of IT Stuff. I possess some rudimentary programming skill (I'm an ActionScript copypasta master :D ), so I'd be keen for this DevLAN.

n00bs are welcome :p I will be doing a basic Game Maker tutorial at the beginning of the LAN for the first timers so all you need is an enthusiastic mind ready to learn.
Also an update. Sorry for the delay and lack of news everyone, it's just I might of secured a better venue than the uni but am still looking into it. The problem with UKZN is that if we want to bring our own machines on campus we have to get them signed in with security which could be a mission for the majority of you that don't know your way around campus and this new venue would be much better and can turn into a regular steady place.
