Man o' man, I think this is going to be an interesting competition. Back in the mid 80's the only games around were text games and the cleverest of the developers made good use of the ASCII table to get borders and special characters to represent characters and enemies.

One of the earliest ASCII games I remember playing was Frogger on my Redstone XT twin floppy and I'm going to remake that classic but fill the screen with text.

Should I finish this game with lots of time to spare, I'll consider using my dungeon generator to make a Rogue clone.

[UPDATE: 5 September 2007 7:52]

Here's a mockup screenshot of my intended game. The idea is to fill the screen with text and color. Once I have the game mechanics up and running I'm going to work on background animations; giving the water a ripple effect and the grass sway.

awesome!

This sounds fun cos frogger was a classic winner :)

You cud also use and engine to make animated backgrounds of text, like water effects and stuff with text only :)

The real question is does GM cater for the characters outside of numbers and letters?

Hmm... this could produce interesting results - especially if you employ an application such as the one that FuzzYspo0N suggests.

Good luck with it! ^_^

Yes, when you create a font you specify the ASCII character ranges. By default its 32-127 (readable characters) but you can set it to use the entire range 0-255.
