As suspected, the highly anticipated “Instant Play” feature for launching Game Maker does not in fact embed Game Maker games into the current browser window nor does it open them up in a new browser window. The games are instead launched by in an entirely separate window controlled by the browser plug-in.
Sandy, chairperson of YoYo Games has also let us know the company has a budget of $2 Million for the development of the Game Maker software, and one key area of focus right now is re-writing the entire runtime engine in C++. This will lead to potentially faster games with possibilities expand further than the current system allows such as making Game Maker compatible with other platforms (e.g. Mac OSX). The opportunities YoYo Games plans to take advantage of once the runner is re-built in C++ are still kept confidential for the time being, but Sandy did confirm that multi-platform development is being considered as a serious possibility at this time.

Browser plugin? Kinda reminds me of the old WildTangent libraries they released a while back. Are those still available?
Otherwise, if they can optimize the runtime engine then life is good for everyone. That goes without saying.
It does sound interesting to embed game maker games into web pages, and should be interesting.
About being rewritten in C++:
It will be nice to have more speed, but wont it make the scripting slightly more complex?

Cool. Speed was always a concern for me, especially since I've been working with alot of objects and large sprites lately. This is really good news for Game maker users. Especially if it means faster loading times. I shall do the Perfect Strangers "Dance Of Joy" if this proves to be true. :D

Rewriting in c++ won't make the scripting more difficult :-) i'm interested in what kind of optimisations they'll make tho as i haven't use GM before. Surely the scripts run fast enough?

Multi-platform games and embedded web page games in GM... it's amazing how something so awesome could be made even more awesome. Awesome!
What would be cool is if they made an extension that worked with a JRE, so you could make mobile games aswell, for lazy people like me not intent on learning Java right now. :)

That would be cool, but super slow.
An interpreted langauge running an interpretated langauge. It would be a waste.

If you have the time (which none of us really has...) Java is really a very cool language to learn... even if it is just for mobile games ;)

Yip, It would be interesting to see how the new Game Maker will preform. C++ will definitely make it easier to implement game maker on different platforms, but to gain speed one need to optimize the engine and that could also been done in object pascal(the language game maker is written in at the moment).
I would also like to see some competition for Game maker or even a open source alternative. I know G-Java (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-java) is a work in progress, but more competition is good.
I also started to design my own game making framework(in theory) to understand how everything work and could work and if anyone is interested I will share but don't expect to much of it.

I quite like the Game Maker framework of Sprites/Objects/Rooms etc and have even used this sort of structure in my S2DL framework. There is already a frightening number of Game Maker equivilents out there (just do a google for "Game Development Tools").
But yes - I'm also busy developing my own :)
