View Full Version : Seven great Xbox 360 Community Games you need to get

Microsoft's Community Games service was designed to deliver amateur-developed Xbox 360 games cheaply to the masses. The problem is, most amateur-developed games suck.

Most … but not all. There are some great games here – and we’re here to help you find them. We gloved up, sifted through the whole bowl of almost 200 titles available at post time, and plucked seven kernels of pure gaming corn from the crap. Each offers something unique, is bargain priced between $2.50 and $10, and stomps the giblets out of a more expensive XBLA game.

You can get all seven for $42.50 total, so buy them immediately. Then download demos for any other games that catch your eye (or ear, in the case of the intriguingly audio-only In the Pit). If you find anything else you like, BUY IT. This is how indie developers get started, and unless you’re content playing Skateboard Shooter Licensed Music Game 20XX every year, you’ll want these eager upstarts to succeed.

It's great to see the games on there getting some positive recognition, has anyone tried any of those on the list out?
It would also be very interesting to know what the sales figures are like but it seems Microsoft aren't releasing them.

Yup, here are the games I've played on that list:

Colosseum:
Saw this back when CC first launched, it's come a long way. I like the new art direction they've taken, but the combat didn't grab me... Probably really cool if you aren't into razor sharp controls ala Ninja Gaiden.

Biology Battle:
Pretty cool, think I still have a pre-community release version without the time-lock. Yay for CC membership ;) I'd buy the full if I had points. I would like slightly tighter controls in some areas and little more visibility on the various powerups and weapons you can get. It's a little unforgiving the first 10 times you play, although that might have been changed in the full.

Weapon of Choice:
Downloaded it as soon as it came out, DBP finalist and all so I had to... I like the look of the game, it's hard in some cases and the weapons take some getting used to. I think everyone likes the jetpack guy because he's possibly the sweet spot on the "What the...?" vs "Oh cool, look what I can do!" scale. I got stuck on the far side of one of the first really heeeeg monsters and couldn't damage it :(

Carneyvale, Showtime:
Again, DBP winner so I got it immediately. I'd probably buy it, given points. I like the feel of the game and I can see why it won DBP, it's polished and fun :)

Artoon:
I have to question the idea behind a 3D jumping puzzle game... It's not like 3D jumping puzzles are the most beloved thing ever or something.

Blow:
Has to be my sleeper hit on XBCG. The game just sucks you in (no pun intended) and doesn't spit you out for ages... It's alarmingly relaxing. You start playing and are mildly underwhelmed with the puzzle concept, but 3 hours later you're still playing it and giggling when that king bubble pops out and cheering him from fan to fan. Excellent progression and very well executed ambiance turn this into something that will steal hours of your time.

Any other XBCG games you've looked at that you really liked? I could give some impressions of a couple of games that I haven't liked and why... But maybe I should wait on that ;)

Queued Colosseum and Blow for download.

I enjoyed Carneyvale Showtime, need to actually play it more :p (I blame Fallout 3)

Another game that I tried yesterday that is not on this list but it just so awesomely cute is The Maw :) Need to go buy some more Microsoft Points so I can play the full version....

I'm planning to try more of these out once I have the bandwidth. I also need to get some more Microsoft Points, mine keep disappearing too fast :p
I really hope to see XBCG keep growing and getting mainstream attention like this more often.
The only problem I have with the setup is the lack of achievements, it makes the games feel less important than their XBLA counterparts.

The Maw does look awesome Kensei but it wouldn't of made this list because it's a XBLA game ;)

Oops -_-*

Right you are, Insomniac - I'll just return to my brain stretching puzzles in Mightier now....
