Hi all (and others)

At rAge my daughter and I spent developing my new game Tribal Survival. The game is now available on the internet - but be warned it is VERY rough indead.

This game was developed just for fun. Coding time on the game was about 20 hours. Design time about the same. My long term goal is to develop an online sports management game. This was a proof of concept to see if it was possible.

The game is released in pre-alpha state. The following are the rules for the Alpha/Pre-Alpha test

1. The are no formal rules pages yet.
2. The game will run from right now - until the 14th.
3. There will be no resets by the admins during the pre alpha test.
4. But any rules, any game formulas can and will be changed on whim by us :)
5. The winner is the person with the most points at the end of the Alpha Test. I expect the formal end time to be 8:30 pm on the 14th.

Here is the web site: http://www.thegamedeveloper.co.za

Basically the game works as follows.
A. Create your tribe. Each race has advantages and disadvantages - giants are big and mean but there arn't many of them around.
B. Allocate your tribe members as you need. Each time you allocate tribe members you can only allocate 1 breeder. It costs 1 action point to allocate a breeder - but 0 action points to allocate other tribe members.
C. Harvest food, learn skills, of visit your neighbours, kill them off, capture them as slaves or steal their food - your choice.
D. You earn action points while you are logged out form the game. You earn 1 action point per hour, plus 1 for each login (minimum of an hour between logins to qualify for this extra action point)

Harvest = Collect Food
Attack = Kill, Capture or Steal from Neighbors
Extort = DOES NOT WORK YET
Scout = Visit your neighbour to find out how strong he is
Infiltrate = Lay traps and break weapons to make it easier to attack
Breed = Make more people
Learn = Gain Skills

Reset = Restart your tribe (This is available only during the test phases)

Currently Breeders cannot be killed. - This will change

You can send mail to each other - be nice :)

My daughter and I are both Admins in the game - we can see your actions - and your mail - where neccessary we will censor - but would rather not. Players who go over board can be banned from the game.

Please post any comments, bugs or suggestions in this thread for me. Alternativly you can send mail in game to "The Admins" tribe. We would appreciate all critism on the game.

Just a quick comment on immediate actions we are working on:
1. Change combat so that less people die
2. Restrict number of times each tribe can attack others
3. Get forum working
4. Get Extortion working
5. Get buldings working
6. Change learning structure so that races dont start at different levels but are rather allocated advantages when ever they use a skill
7. Rule books

Cheers
William and Loreley

"Your tribe members bravely travel into the surrounding area to collect food. You collected 1337 food"

\o/

Also, the rules page doesn't work at all.

The webpage is misaligned using Firefox :(

First piece of suggestiveness: can it not be wrangled so that a player allocates multiple breeders at once, and has that number of action points deducted appropriately? It becomes a bit of a chore when you have to go "1 breeder, refresh page" every time when you're really planning to put down 5 breeders in the long run.

This round is officially over. Next round should start just after the weekend

Changes coming are
1. Allocate multiple breeders (from breed page)
2. Change in combat rules.
3. Better management of skills
4. Announcement page
5. Change in some of the formulas based on watching the game unfold, and feedback from a few users.

Was hoping to get extort and forums working but hav not yet managed it.

Next round will be another 1 week alpha test. Major changes to happen after the next alpha due to balance requirements.

Cheers
William

I have to admit I kept forgetting to log in so I only logged in twice and came in the top 5. Personally, I'd like to see some more results from attacking other than "you killed some soldiers" and no notification that I was attacked (although maybe I wasn't).

I'm worried that the game doesn't give any motivation to try any strategy other than breed and harvest?

Fengol: yeah, you weren't attacked. I received a notification every time EvilToaster sortied into my territory. That insufferable ass.

And because you weren't attacked, you had no motivation to breed or harvest. I saw a bit of combat myself, and realised that I had to soup up my armies if I didn't want to get steamrolled.

Also, I wonder if for future versions you could ask players to opt-in for e-mail notifications. Something like a "daily digest" of what's happening in their Tribal Survival world. It would (a) let me know if there's something I need to address in the game (especially if I'd been particularly pummelled over the previous 24 hours) and (b) remind me to log in more frequently. ;) The game isn't always at the front of my mind when I'm multitasking, and getting the voluntary daily email would help loads. I'm not sure how intense this chore would be, but I think it would be really valuable to implement in the long run.

I totally agree on a Daily Digest email option :D

Righto:

- The game feels far too reliant on breeding. I felt a lot of the time I was just racing to have the most breeders. Maybe make assigning breeders increasingly more expensive?
- I have no what constitutes score, was it food? Otherwise I don't see any other use of food.
- I really like the way it's easy and affordable to scout. It's much easier to plan if you know what you're up against.
- Skill upgrades seem far too expensive to be worth looking at.
- The differences in where you can forage is never explained. Is there any advantage to foraging in my enemies valley?
