Game name(s)
Zombies, Zombie Invasion, Zombie Apocalypse, Don't get eaten, You can't survive.
(still need to decide on a final one - any ideas welcome)
Description
The zombies have arisen and wonder aimlessly seeking human brains. As their hunger intensifies so their senses become more acute and their powers greater.
You are not a zombie, at least for the moment, and if you'd like to stay that way, you're going to have to get moving, a lot.
Tips
i. AVOID THE ZOMBIES!
ii. You are the mouse pointer.
iii. Don't run into the walls.
iv. Click to restart.
v. Refer to point i.
vi. N is a zombie which has fallen over.
Additional Ideas
Power-ups, weapons, zombie state, herding avoidance and the ability to last more than 30 seconds.
Technical
The game is to be written in cross-browser HTML, CSS and Javascript. Yes, I am not right in the head. One of the zombies may have bitten me already.
It works under Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari.
I am using the prototype library, it really helps with cross-browser issues. (http://www.prototypejs.org/)
Questions
When will the nightmare end?

I dont see the need for bundling it into a zip file,
Im curious to see where this goes :)
It sounds fun, perhaps cliche but with a text twist it could be awesome, keep working at it.

I'd like your final submission in a zipfile please. I need a crystallised version at the end of the competition to judge fairly (you could always keep working on the URL version - in fact I want you to - but I need to have a single version to judge, otherwise you'll have had more time than the other entrants).

That makes sense dislekcia, I will acquiesce to your request.
I can't make any promises about the zombies though.

I have put up an initial release. See the beginning of this thread for details.
Please would anyone that's interested give me your impressions and an indication of the score you manage to get.

I got 20 score after about a minute with quite a crap load of zombies. I like this kind of game but i recently have been playing runaway 1.1 Written by edg3 which is in fact identical, with perhaps more gameplay. its impressive you have it going in a browser though.
My tips : The zombies are too anxious at times, meaning they all run into one spot leaving nearly the rest of the field empty. so if you hover and wait then run fast the game "level" stays quite much similar..
But its a great work keep it up k?

Really cool concept :)
Bit of a bug report though, if you click to start the game and then move your cursor outside the box, it disappears, thus your score just keeps going up and you can't die.

Thanks for the info! One of the best parts of writing a game is to get some feedback from people who have played it.
I've just downloaded runaway and I'll have a look at it when I get a chance. It's always interesting to see someone elses take on an idea.

Yeah, this is what I was talking about when I said "herding avoidance" under my ideas. I will probably end up having to give the zombies a state to fix this, rather than now where all zombies follow exactly the same rules.

Please would you tell me what browser (including the version) you were using and what resolution your display is set to?
You are supposed to die instantly if you move the mouse outside the game area.

IE7 at 1280x1024... It doesn't do it all the time though.

ie7, thats the problem. its also the reason for pollution and world poverty. and drugs.
lol jk,
rather than now where all zombies follow exactly the same rules.
I like that idea, perhaps give the zombies a state of "panic" or "despeartion" based on how long they have been alive. That way the ones that are more anxious get on your ass more and more, and the newer ones mosey around in your direction. making the playing field a lot more treacherous to try cross

When you click to start a new game the game loop is "rebooted". I think you've discovered some sort of race condition in which if you click and move the mouse out fast enough (within about 80ms), it's possible to get it confused.
I will definitely look into it.

I just got the game now, and my high score (on my 3rd try) is 29. I thought I did pretty well and took a screen shot just in case no one believes me.

This is quite cool, Light. I like that the zombies take time to become fully "roused". ^_^
I think that my best score (after three or so plays) was 13. Perhaps I should be glad for the lack of a real (or at least apparent) zombie invasion! XD

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have now made each zombie has it's own AI too, rather than the global one it had for all zombies when you played it. This makes it feel a little more dynamic.

This game is an educational tool which will help you survive the coming zombie invasion. I would suggest playing it constantly. ;)

There was a small bug when playing under IE, I have uploaded a patch for this issue.

Very nice, Light - I like it. ^_^
The zombie movement is quite cool.
I would like to ask, however: what are the 'N's? [edit] Nevermind, I found the answer in the first post - sorry. ^^;
