Frog Hunt is a game by Free Lunch Design. Free Lunch design make interesting freeware games. Google for their site and games.
Download here. (http://g3.acid-play.com/download/62e83756/froghunt_install.exe)
When you start up the game you are greeted with a warning which proclaims it to be a “broken game” which as you will soon find out, basically means your one and only task - catching frogs - is actually impossible to do. Not only that, but the timer counts up, not down, completely negating any of the pre-determined rules of the game.
As set out by the creator, the basic principal of a game is to have a bunch of ideas and put them all together. When they’re all connected and it looks nice, you’ve got a game. But if the ideas are unconnected and the rules do not apply, you’re in a situation where you’re forced to make your own rules or just give up.
So all of the most annoying traits of games have been compiled here in an ad hoc fashion, these include “God giving you points” and the obvious “unobtainable goals”. It is within the many unrelated game elements that you are encouraged to make some sort of sense of the chaos in order to play.
Its an interesting idea and anyone wanting to make games could learn from it.:)

Its more "art" than game. I dont mind these type of games, because it is actually a mind-opener, but sometimes I think it is made by people who cant make games, so they make something unplayable and lable it is as "arty".
Interesting, but only for 5 minutes. :)

I did not say that free lunch cant make games. But you catch my drift right?

Our purpose as indie game devers is to create playable fun games that do work. Objectives and goals are the basis of most games without these in place, it is just a toy but it still can be fun, just on a long term basis.

I really like the idea... Sounds like something with a little bit of thought behind it. We'll see if it's actually like that when I download it later.

Tr00jg, I'm surprised at you! When you play Frog Hunt the opening screen says "This game is an experiment in game design and is intentionally broken" and should therefore be considered no less poorly done or artsy than anything someone posts on the Game.Dev forums and says this is something they're working on.
Everyone who starts game development can't make games and produce something that's unplayable. It's the practice and, importantly, putting something out there that makes you better.

Brilliantly designed to have no design, and all the better for it. I couldn't stop laughing, and my laughter just got worse and worse as the game did. :D

100 POINTS. Wheeeee ^^
Yeah, oddly enough, I just started making it my goal to avoid the elephants for as long as possible. Timer was my "score". ^^

Yeah, my bad. Too many times have I seen people put like a week's worth of effort into a game, loses interest, then makes everything really weird (and "unplayable"), and then releases it. Lots of people then claim it to be awesome and something "revolutionary" (because of the weird/non-sensical nature of it). Its just crap because I put way much more effort into my games (to make it "playable"), and it gets less attention...
Yes, I am sounding a bit subjective (actually a LOT) and perhaps I'm going a bit overboard. Just so you know, this happens a lot at the GMC forums... so yeah, maybe I am a bit misguided.
And yes Fengol, I agree. Everyone who starts game dev cant make games, I was more referring to the above example.
After playing through Frog Hunt, I have to give it merit for what they tried to do though.

I think everyone came to realise, the actual goal is to dodge the elephants. :P

Not really to dodge the elephants, but to dodge the arid patches of land they create on impact. In short - keep on the grass.
100 Points!
