The next IGDA, Cape Town chapter, meetup (http://www.gamedevsa.com/2011/event-ct-igda-meetup) will be held on the 21st of January.
[edit] Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Agenda:
* Discussion on GGJ (http://www.gamedevsa.com/2010/ggj201), an event to be held at UCT on 28 – 30 Jan
* Developer platforms
* “show and tell”

Place:
UCT room 212 in the Maths building.

So everyone who's been thinking CT needs something like the Community Sesison we have here in Joburg each month should attend this event ;)

I see that the UCT/ CapeTown GGJ notes add that "We will not be offering the paper-based game design option (we think the numbers would be too small)"

This saddens me :<

I'm sure Patrick would bring in the Paper if more than one or two people apply, send him an email, he's approachable. What is really really sad is that it looks like there will be significantly fewer people making any games at all this year... judging by the attendants listed on the GGJ11 website.

Seriously, South African game dev is meant to be growing, not shrinking. It's one weekend, it's really fun, and I'd wager that most of the people who are not attending are going to spend that time doing something forgettable.

Maybe there are a bunch of people procrastinating... or maybe they just need a pep talk at the IGDA, Cape Town chapter meetup.

The lack of signups is odd... There seemed to be a lot of people at the first IGDA meetup last year, so I would have thought there would be a ton of GGJammers. It could be that they're simply not signing up on the site at the moment. Are any of the students back at uni yet?

Well, I'll be there with paper and pen in hand. We'll see what happens though. I've registered and applied, but I'm not sure I'm on the list. Should I expect a email reply from patrick?

First go to the http://www.globalgamejam.org site and register/login there.
Then go to edit your Profile and under "GGJ 2011 Site: " select the "South Africa UCT" or "South Africa JHB" site and save.
You should now be on the 'list'

For the Cape Town site to you need to contact the organisers (http://www.afrigraph.org/global-game-jam-2011) with more information.

If you like I can get hold of Patrick and ask about the Paper Option... ?

The organisers won't exactly be able to do awards and prizes if there is only one Paper Entrant... there needs to be at least 2 or 3. But there is no reason why you can't be there, make a cool paper game and submit it into the Global Game Jam.

I did email Patrick on the subject. Essentially, he's said that I'd need to organise a team prior to the event so that he knows there are enough people interested in it. Because I won't be there the entire weekend (have a birthday to attend) I don't want to be responsible for this. I was hoping there would be other interest and a group would form on the day that I could join. Also, we apparently need a printer which won't be available at the venue.

Am I the only one interested in doing a board game?

Well, a TEAM isnt required for a board game, is it? How card can it be to bring scissors and some paper?

Isn't the point of the GGJ to join a team of sorts? Working by myself I might as well stay home and work on other projects i had in mind :P

Fair enough :) The point is also community, just going is a good part of that. Working with the groups, getting feedback. Whether you work alone is still a choice though.

That was a great meetup! It was really awesome to see that there are quite a few people who are going to be at the GGJ11.

Perhaps more time spent at the Bar next time?
