View Full Version : Vista Incompatability Solved (GM 6.0/6.1)
Ive had problems playing games made in game maker 6 in vista and its been pretty frustrating, but today, I found a tool by Mark Overmars that works, and is very usefull:
Making games work under Windows Vista
Games created with Game Maker versions 6.0 and 6.1 are not compatible with Windows Vista. The best you can do is upgrade to version 7.0 of Game Maker before you create the final version of your game.
However, if this is impossible, there is a little tool to convert games created with versions 6.0 and 6.1 into a file that is compatible with WIndows Vista. The tool is contained in the attached zip file.
Please understand that this tool is provided AS IS without any warranty. It is just a quick hack and should be used with care. Always first make a copy of your game.
Please realise that you are not allowed to redistribute converted games unless you are the creator or copyright holder of the original game.

Um, not to be funny, but why not just upgrade to GM7? If you've registered GM6 you can get your key converted free of charge to unlock GM7, so that isn't really an issue. If there's something I'm missing, then by all means - put me in my place ;).

I am not happy with GM7. The YoYo games bull**** has made me rethink ever buying a new license.
I was happy with GM up till 6.1. This online activation crap means I can't use GM7 at home, where I don't have an internet connection.
I think Game Maker made a big mistake, handing it over to YoYo.

I'm assuming (and hoping) that this converter is for .exe files and not .gm6 files. In other words, I received a GM 6 game (exe file) from Cyberninja the other day, and found I couldn't run it in Vista. I'm hoping that once I've downloaded this file (*clickey*), I can run the hack on the program and have my problem solved.
I'm not sure why Overmars decided to do the Yoyo deal, I thought he was going just fine without it. :/

Ah, of course. Wasn't reading properly. Sorry.
The converter works perfectly, I havent had a single problem with it.

Thats exactly what it is. :)

Talking about GM7... Ive never used it before. Since, it GM6 files converts easily to GM7, I continue to work with GM6. At the end, to Vista-able it, Ill convert it to GM7.
Thats very helpful and user friendly Tr00jg, my issue was that people who havent moved to gm7 dont care or wont put the effort in, so this tool saved me the hassle of rebooting into XP everytime I wanted to play a game not vista compatible. :)

I have to agree with Miktar that the online activation is poorly implemented and even with an internet connection at home I've struggled to get it registered when I've had to format my machine or something.

(ZOMG! Fengol's back!) Where did you disappear to? :P Yeah, like Tr00jg, I'll stick with GM6.1 for now...

ZOMG! Fengol is back! But he's lost his halo! I fear that trouble's afoot... ;)
I never realised that people were having such trouble with online activation for GM7. I remember struggling when I first got it, but at the time it had only just been released and I was still on dial-up. I figured things would be better now. Guess I was wrong. :|

Didn't they mention they would release some sort of way to activate it without internet... Did that ever happen?
