This is a reminder of the GGJ and to have a topic that can be bumped now and then ;)

The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world's largest game jam event occurring annually in late January. GGJ brings together thousands of game enthusiasts participating through many local jams around the world. You basically make a game over a weekend, starting late on Friday evening and ending on Sunday evening.

Visit http://www.globalgamejam.org for more info and to register.
If you want to attend one of the local venues first go to edit your Profile and under "GGJ 2011 Site: " select the "South Africa UCT" or "South Africa JHB" site and save. You should now be on a list on the GGJ site. Read all the info in the links below, the venues have additional requirements to register and get onto a "list" (like needing your id or email or phone, etc).

Sweet! I came across one other person who seemed keen... I will badger him to go along.

Can I promise him that there will be a boardgame design section? (because you sounded uncertain before)

I would actually love to be part of a team designing a board game rather than work on another puter game, since that is what I do the whole day :P .. but I can't make the CT event, and maybe not even the Joburg one.. sux :(

The world could end tomorrow, so nothing is ever certain :P But I plan to be there and meet Gabba who's keen to do board-game design. Scissors, glue, cardboard and pens are required. I'll bring my lappy to write up any rules we need or something. Should be fun :D

Also, what time and where at UCT are we meant to meet on friday?

BlackShipsFillt
20-01-2011, 07:45 PM
Doh, it was Gabba whom I spoke of :)

I think last year we had to be there well before 5PM (which I think is when it starts)... So I guess at least 4:30 or 4PM... But I'm not to be trusted on matters of punctuality.

The number 3 has been thrown around too, so maybe we're meant to be there at 3pm?

maybe try ...
Department of Computer Science
18 University Avenue, Upper Campus, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch 7701

and ask around. Last time I found it by luck, there where no clear indication (like posters) showing where in the department of science we should go.

Posters and visible directions are a really, really good idea. I'll forward that on to Patrick.

They did have some printouts stuck in the building where it was held, so you knew to which floor to go, but first you had to know it was that building - but I don't recall that being the computer science building. So maybe something in the building that they direct you to on the website, which could take you from there.

Hey guys,

for those of you who weren't at the meeting yesterday.
This is where the UCT Jam will be happening.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=mathematics+building,+cape+town,+south+africa&aq=&sll=-33.957399,18.461473&sspn=0.001726,0.002411&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Mathematics+Bldg,+Rondebosch,+Southern+Subur bs,+Cape+Town,+Western+Cape+7700,+South+Africa&ll=-33.958085,18.46143&spn=0.003453,0.004823&z=18

I'll see if we can get some signs put up from the parking lots to direct people to the building as well.

To be clear, it is happening in the Mathematics Building (marked on the map) and not the Computer Science Building next to it?

BlackShipsFillt
22-01-2011, 03:24 PM
Yes I believe so. That is what Patrick said at the meeting. Mathematics building, in the big hall place on the street level floor (which is easy to find apparently).

Yes it is happening in the maths building. The comp sci building is currently undergoing renovations.

Just to be sure, do I need to email Patrick or anything to register?

I'm already down on the GGJ site.

BlackShipsFillt

Yes... Patrick has to have your ID number so that he can make you a security pass.

Also there should be some pizza, so included some dietry restrictions if you have any.

So what time are we meant to meet there tomorrow?

Good question. Last week Patrick said 5pm, although he did mention that maybe things could start earlier if people wanted it to. Anybody know for sure if we're doing 3pm instead?

I emailed Patrick, but I've gotten no reply.

Yea, this is epic.

Wow, funny how many people misread stuff :) For the people misreading this stuff :
Its not the top 10 overall. It is simply a top 10 for submitted games to the challenge... Not that many games were submitted.
Not to downplay the achievement - Read this post rather as the following - GGJ is not a competition. There is no placement, no prizes. This SIDE third party, promoted competition is something entirely separate and is based on entrants entering. Not a selection of the games.

03-02-2011, 03:16 PM
Oh, mah bad. Still.

BlackShipsFillt
03-02-2011, 04:53 PM
Yeah... Still a top ten of a selection of the top games submitted by the various sites! (as judged by GameSauce with commercial potential and a little casualness as the criteria).

Clearly Last Fleet could go on to do brilliant things! (and the Cape Town Game Jammers aren't the only people who think so).

Only I 've seen where the group photo from UCT and the video by Evan.

Just as a note, Steve has finished all the artwork for the game's cards (which look schweet if you ask me) and we're just simply waiting for them to be uploaded (something I don't want to do on my minimal cap). In the mean time, all that's available on the GGJ is the rules. I will let everyone know when the cards are back up so you can have a squizz.

As for photos, my camera batteries were dead. Sorry xyber.
