I've just gotten off the phone with Michael. There's good news and bad news.
Bad news: We don't have a room like we did last year. Planning is going ahead with us having some space in the food court area dedicated to us. This means that we're going to have to be super-hardcore when it comes to security: There will ALWAYS have to be someone around to make sure projectors and stuff don't get nabbed.
The good news: We're changing the focus this year from attracting new people to Game.Dev, to being all about networking within the dev community and showing off what people have done.
This means:
-Talks are going to be about what you guys WANT, not aimed at getting people into game development. Go ahead and nominate topics that you want to talk or hear about!
-We're supporting current developers, so if we do a game code-off, we'll do it because we want to and it's fun ;)
-More discussion and inclusion of people - it's an "unconference", not something where people talk AT an audience.
-The biggest part of what we do is going to be showcasing games that people have made.
So: If you have a game that can be completely standalone (Like Fengol's L4D card game) then bring it along and leave it for people to play - we're expecting at least 2 fully snazzed up decks from Fengol, for instance. If you've got a PC game you'd like to have people play, bring it along on CD or memory stick (in instant-playable form, no installs if you can help it) and it'll get time on the big screen.

So, we need:
1. Volunteers committed to making sure nothing walks away. I'm not sure if we can get people comp tickets for this as yet.
Kharrak
2. A projector and free-standing screen to project on. Cairnswm?
Zakeroph = 1, maybe 2 projectors
3. AWESOME communication. The key part of this unconference is going to be letting people know what's going on as it changes and self-evolves, this means we need people to be hooked into things like Twitter/MXit or IRC from their phones IN the dome itself. Have a cool idea? Showing your game on the screen? Tweet it and get people going.
4. A whiteboard. Nice to have, but if we do, it'd be great for inclusive sessions and capturing ideas.
Luke = Whiteboards, possibly
5. Dedicated camera-people. We need as many people as we can get constantly snapping away, capturing the event as it comes together, tagging photos on the fly and getting them out there. Again, this is where Twitter comes in super-handy.
6. We need to know what hardware you plan to bring (if any) so that we can make sure you get through security, etc. Have a laptop? Bring it.
7. A FAQ list: People who have been rAge volunteers before, post the questions you got asked the most here and we'll compile a FAQ for the day, that way anyone there can help interested parties quickly and courteously.
Game.Dev this year is going to be a meeting place, a catalyst for discussions and random cool stuff. All the things that we loved from the years before without the stress of trying to get new people to pay attention (They'll notice us having a good time more)!

Pity we wont have access to he relatively luxurious room of last year, but at least there is a location. Hopefully it's not a corner cramp one... or a middle-of-the-people-traffic one, but it's good to hear there is at least a social anchor.
EDIT: In response to your second post, if I DO bring my two new board games (asuming there will be enough comfortable space to put them), I'll be at the stand 24/7 watching over my own stuff. I might as well watch everyone else's too. I've stopped thieves at Rage before :P

Yeah, we'll make sure we're getting the best spot we can this year... It's a bit like an "open air stand", tbh.
Feel free to bring any board/card games that you've got that you want to play in or around the area, we can store them safely when you're not playing them - at the very least. Just expect design dissection by random people over your shoulder as you play ;)
I think we can bring 1 or 2 whiteboards. Just need to see if they fit in the car :)

I'll be happy to try snap a few pics here and there, and of course I'll be bringing my laptop along. :P
I'd also like to see people discussing marketing, which is probably agiven considering Comp 23.

I can be there for saturday and sunday to guard, I also have a small whiteboard I can bring and I have a laptop. We need to make a plan to present XNA games on the xbox.
You realise I can't fade out now on bringing my L4D decks to rAge?

We need to make a plan to present XNA games on the xbox.
We can always show XNA games on a laptop with a hooked in xbox controller. This will also eliminate the need for a net connection.

That, I believe, is the idea ;P

Well I'll do what I've been doing for the past I don't know how many years.
Could also bring a laptop, and xbox if you could find a use for them.

I'll be coming to rAge this year finally woot :)

On a side note, I'm not really sure I'm gonna be bringing the board games anymore. The 4 player one looks like it wont ship in time, and the 2 player one... well, the size of many of the "missions" may prove to be more issues than it's worth. Though, If anything, I'll be there to traumatize the sugar, or sugar like substances :P

I think we're still covered on the boardgames thing anyway. I'm hearing about all sorts of stuff that's gonna be brought. :3

Yup. I just picked up San Juan the other day (and Aeq's been eying the BSG boardgame) so I'll be bringing cardgame goodness. I'll be pointing at the game and going "Look at how well designed it is!" a lot though, so be prepared ;)

Hahaha.
Okay, so there's hope yet.
Though, if there's any chance of a table (or table-like device) that's at least 1.5x1.5 - 2x2 meters that I can use, shout, since I DO wanna bring Space Hulk. I've finally gotten my head around the rules, darnit! :P

Something that I'm really keen to do is have Postmortem Sessions.
Everyone gets together and individuals get up, talk about their games briefly, share their learning, raise some awareness and maybe answer a few questions. The goal is for anyone to be able to get up, join in and talk about their game.
Each postmortem has 3 questions: What went right? What went wrong? What did you learn? That's it. Once those are dealt with (briefly in 5 minutes) people can ask questions before the next person gets up.
So far I'm thinking of having a Postmortem Session on Saturday and maybe a followup on Sunday. When would be good times?
Gazza_N
29-09-2009, 02:14 PM
I really like that idea. As for when, well, can't we scatter them throughout the day rather than having them in one big session?
Fallen

That would be nice, or maybe just have the sessions on different days ... I would really like to hear these sessions but I'll only be there on saturday.

Edit: Can you print out little time plans for the talks? I'm likely to forget otherwise.

Wait. Would it be useful if we had a printer? 'Cause I have this nifty little portable printer (even has a battery) that I can bring. I which case you would proberbly want me to bring my lappy with.

30-09-2009, 09:27 PM
I'm going with Gazza on this one , I think it best to spread the talks out over the whole day.
That way more people can present to a more varied crowd and we can hopefully get some more varied criticism:)(just my 2c).
I would like to ask if I can help out with the stand in any way ?just give me a heads up:).
(I've also got a little project in GM that I would like to show to people and get some crit back:))
See everyone in two days time!

Final post before I die and wake up at rAge:
If you're going to bring equipment, come in to rAge first, find us and THEN we'll go get it in via the exhibitors entrance with you. OK? Do not try to get things in the front door, this will not work :)
We'll be next to the food court area, being loud and awesome. Not hard to find at all, no secret paths and/or handshakes required.

Tell you what. Man up, be cool with the fact that you made a silly mistake, build a bridge and get over it.
It's the interwebs, it's really not a big deal. Unless you happen to also be Eyeball, in which case people WILL laugh and point ;)

A pity, cos we totally had somebody else bring in THEIR ENTIRE FREAKING COMPUTER just to show us their tech demo. I helped them carry it in. Happily, I may add. :) And if you're scared of your game getting criticised: yeah, that's what we do. We look at the good and the bad. Constructively.
But I'm going to indulge in a moment of frankness and say this: you're setting a poor precedent for yourself, Luenardi. I've heard a bit of unimpressive commentary about your recent behaviour towards members of this community (and yes, Azimuth counts) and it's starting to make me feel rather unimpressed myself, but revealing yourself to everyone, giving them a tech demo and making an attempt to patch up the problems is your best bet for reconciliation.
Sitting on the forums and fishing for sympathy, on the other hand, is not. Dislekcia gave you some very sensible advice earlier, and you didn't follow it. Instead you came here to tell us, again, that we somehow frighten you. In your posts you've implied that we're irrational, hateful and even violent people.
I ask this sincerely: how are we meant to take that message?
Show up today. I have personally, and without fail, greeted every single new attendant at rAge warmly so far, and you're no exception. Prove that you're a better person than the one you're promoting here, and you'll reap the rewards tenfold. Continue to make underhand stabs at our character, however, and even I'll stop being congenial.
It's a very black-and-white path, and I think all roads point to showing up at rAge. If you're not actually at the expo today, that's a pity. But if you are, you really should go up to Danny at the Game.Dev stand, slip him your flashstick, and let him put your game up on that lovely sixty-bajillion inch monitor that we stole from cairnswm. :)
Ahhh, big screens ftw ...
