Nonoba (http://nonoba.com/) is offering a cash prize of $15000 for anybody who build the best/most addictive multiplayer game (using flash) & their API.
Yeah just read the rest here (http://nonoba.com/developers/contests/multiplayerapikickoff).

That seems pretty damn cool! Thanks for the link :)
Aeq and I will probably get into that if we have the time after rAge... I don't really see a downside, we wanted to work on a Flash game with ads anyway to see what the returns were like. I think that's a pretty awesome competition.
I'll let you guys know what I think of the API once I've tested it out.

Yeah I was thinking of assembling a team, anyway all I know is with compos like these there are normally big guns released near the end of them. So I reckon any entry with a chance of winning will not only have to be addictive, but well polished.
Good luck to all that enter.

yea and ill only submit my release near the end, and watch the others to polish lol >D but i dunno, time will tell.

You guys have nothing to lose.
Would have entered, but I have 0 flash experience and 0 motivation to get some :P
I reckon I'll give this a shot, but will see how things go...

I soo wanna enter this, perhaps we could make a nag team project, cause there'll be a ton of work, but if we pull it off and create a cool game we can continue work on it and make money from selling stuff to players. For instance in a MMO selling money or something. :D I'm so psyched right now.

So uhm... I've done loads of web dev, but I've never ever touched Flash before...
What do I need to start? ;)

NO MMORPG's lol, srsly. think rationally :D
To learn flash? the inherent flash tutorials that come with flash are my favourite as a starting point, and to checkout www.flashkit.com for tons of free messy examples. There is a lot to learn from others code. Make sure you grasp the scope concepts, and flash symbols' personal space etc.

I was actually thinking of making an MMORPG ;) gonna draw up a design doc then nag forums might be able to put in a team effort(if they want that is), if noone has any other better plans that is but if I have to I'll wing it alone. I've been wanting to make one and this is just a perfect opportunity. Free hosting check, free almost perfect for the job api check.
Thanks for the link btw.
EDIT: what do I need to download to be able to script flash and what not.

Seriously the best games are simple in design and addictive.
And this is why there is no McDonalds on Everest...
I suggest a small simple idea, so well polished that it makes peggle look like a paper cut out of Donald Trump. :P
@ ShadowMaster:
You need Flash preferably cs3 you can find a free trail @ http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
Anyway teams usually end up in disaster... finding committed parties that actually stick to the game plan/scope and schedule is nearly impossible... life intervenes. I have been on many teams dedicated many hours of work and lost those all due to the team not pulling through...
Has forced me to re-evaluate my options when deciding to work with a team and see whether or not the work load is manageable if all of them decide to fade away on me.
So choose your project wisely, since you might actually have to finish it yourself.

@Afflict: Thanks for the link. I see where you are coming from and I'll stick to myself for now.
EDIT: Isn't there perhaps a freeware application for flash?

This comp looks fun, and with $15000 there is enough incentive for anyone!
As for the team effort idea, I think it should be an idea that is small enough in scope so that two people could do it, but separated into bite sized chunks (sprites, levels, gameplay, theme, polish) so that people can just spend some time on what they enjoy and hopefully it will all add up to a game.
My idea for a game would be to have a game that changes as the players want it:
have some basic objects, and let players go into a super-lite editiing mode where they can,
in essence, dev a bit, and then play it.
So it would be a big jam session that evolves with all the peoples ideas.
It will probably be chaos, but with a little luck it will be fun chaos, instantly getting your ideas play-tested and changing them as you play.

That's a rather tempting sum, but unfortunately, with other projects already on my plate and no experience that I recall in Flash, I at least intend to give it a miss.
It's a pity, though.

Flash is really easy to learn though... Plus their best multiplayer game in June was a remake of Othello. Srsly.

Also I checked, their multiplayer api doesn't allow data to be stored between sessions of multiplayer games so no MMOs. :( so just keep that in mind when designing games.
You can save data of individual players though. :D

Typically you'd store persistent data on a server of some sort. They don't offer a server, but they do seem to have a C++ version of their API which you could use to write a server with.
Flash allows you to store data between sessions in cookie-like SharedObjects.

Well that's the problem there is no way of storing stuff like that on forum, though they say they'll change it if there is enough interest. And there is no way of communicating to an outside database to store data in, because it's not allowed.

I'd assume you could connect to a custom application using the same API and have that app handle data storage locally... Which happens to be exactly how MMOs work. Nobody in their right mind would expose a DB to public access like that, nor just use a naked DB as a "persistent world". That's just asking for trouble...
