View Full Version : Dev.Mag Issue 19 prep thread

Right, so off the bat, I drop this reminder again:
THIS MONTH'S DEADLINE IS THE 21ST.
I hope that this gives some people additional breather room, and I hope that everyone has been working towards the regular deadline already if they haven't heard about the extension yet. Sorry that the prep thread wasn't set up earlier -- it was actually something that I really should have gotten around to doing earlier, for organisation's sake.
I think that it should be noted that I don't expect anybody to break their backs regarding submissions: what Dev.Mag *really* needs is a little something from everybody, so if you're milling about here being a silent spectator, try swing that around and volunteer for something, even if it's just a 300-word opinion piece! Heck, opinion pieces are actually welcome, they help me decide what sort of writing a new freelancer is best suited to. ;)
Also please note that this is the final Dev.Mag for the year -- effectively our holiday edition. So let's make one last brave effort before we have our yearly break, and make this into something totally awesome!
Content list is below, you should all know the drill. ;) Please note that "general volunteering" is also welcome: in other words, you can volunteer to write "something" in Dev.Mag, and I'll find a story for you to get on if I feel it's necessary.
----------------------------------
Current content up for grabs in the mag. Will be edited at regular intervals, so please check on this regularly. All articles on this post are up for grabs, unless they're indicated as having a writer assigned. This may be a habit that I keep up with future issues, it's nice and organised and stuff.
Please note that further proposals are requested for each section -- this isn't a cast-in-stone content deal.
FROM THE NET:
- done by me, though submissions are wholeheartedly welcome. +-100 words each
FEATURE:
One possible feature still TBA
Aquaria interview
www.mobilegd.com, a mobile gamedev website. Could also go as a tailpiece or review (Coolhand, please?)
OPINIONS:
(Please note that the opinion section is an open ground and that all wannabe writers are welcome to try out. If you want to get into writing for Dev.Mag, feel free to have a go in this section. Should be 300-500 words)
REVIEWS:
UT40K mod review (MushiMushi ? )
5 days a stranger (Insomniac )
TUTORIALS:
Game development for beginners ( Fengol -- I'm twisting your arm for this )
Blue pill article - Pygame (Skinklizzard, pretty please!)
Blender (?rman/wireman)
Photoshop (UntouchableOne)
DESIGN:
Coding Etiquette (Coolhand - if you can find any more topics. Request me for a brainstorm if needed)
Replacement series to fill the void left by our dearly departed I-Imagine series
Postmortem: Cartesian Chaos (Evil_Toaster? Pweese?)
Any other postmortems welcome, possibly Deathbringer? (Gazza_N?)
TAILPIECE:
Suggestions welcome (possibly something related to the DB sprite set here ;) )

I'll be doing the regular photoshop piece and possibly an opinion piece. btw Nandrew, tell me you got part 2 last month. I asked for you to confirm that you recieved it and you didn't so I've been really paranoid since.

I will definitely get an interview going. I'll scout around for possible developers (perhaps the guys from Aquaria), which is awesome.

Chances_of_submission != good. I'm out of the country for two weeks on a bweezness trip (leaving this Saturday), and I'll only be back on the 24th. Sorry. :(
That, and I'd rather wait until Deathbringer is dead... er... finished to write a postmortem. What with the recent changes I've had to make, it promises to be an epic story of trial, error, failure, redemption, and the return of ancient matrix mathematics skills. Dev.Mag will get the scoop, I promise. ;)

Oh, bugger, yeah, got it. Sorry about that.
I've been rather poor with feedback this past month, hopefully that will change now. >.<

Hmm, alright, though this one may be subject to certain scrutiny, depending on whether or not it overlaps the current PS tutorials too much.

i dont know if it will, you dont usually use PS and, its a FAR off technique to what it is i been seeing him do, but thats all good. ill submit really soon, im compiling the final today :)

@ Fuzzy: No offence but I have planned GUI creation for later photoshop tutorials as finishing touches to your game, hence the title "game graphics design". This includes the in-game graphics and the games gui(everything to do with game graphics). If your idea of "effective gui implementation" is different to what I have in mind then feel free to embark on it. I just wanted to let you know so our articles don't conflict.

photoshop tutorials
my article on "effective gui creation and implementation"
i hate to double compare quote, but its not a graphics tutorial. I wouldnt be doing a graphics tutorial because you already are. as stated in other threads lol, but either way i wouldnt be doing a game graphics tutorial because you already are doing a series on it, thats logic. Thats like making a blender series while there is one running nobody in their right mind does that...
@ Fuzzy: No offence i dont think you could offend me, im here for the community not for myself. if the community wants tutorials on photoshop tools, they can have it. The editors and readers choose a large part of the content see, i dont. So i submit what i think would be cool for the COMMUNITY not for myself, and submit that. If i were submitting so i could read my own article i would be a moron, and if i was submitting duplicate articles i would be too.
Im "ranting" , but im not. It shouldnt overlap yours, yours is graphics. Mine is theory and principles. If that overlaps yours, dont call it a graphics series, and again, the editor decides, if mine goes in, cool, if not, ill submit something else :)
So we will see what the ED thinks, cos to me its not a competition (im not saying it is to you). Mine is already finished, bar the images i use as examples (screens from games) so to me its just something i can share...
So dont stress :)

I'm not stressing, just making sure our stuff doesn't conflict or seem redundant. I too am doing this for the community and to help people enrich their games. Don't get so defensive dude, it was just a constructive comment to prevent repetition.

You should both write up the exact plans for your series and send them to Nandrew. That way, he'll be able to judge in advance, if any conflicts might arise. :)

Excellent idea Cyber. Will do that after issue 18 is out as I'm sure Nandrew is quite busy at the moment.

If you read it wrong, apologies.
My thing explains itself and i have spoken to nandrew about it and far as i can tell its ok. I wont write what its about, its not a series, it is an article. let nandrew choose it or not :)

I'd say that the onus of communication falls on the person using the least punctuation... That means you could certainly have written your posts better.
Either way, nobody's peeved and yet you write something sarcastic? Not good. Stop the melodrama pls.

look I'll give it a shot, but have some sort of disclaimer skink is an idiot rant ready to fill its place
if I dont get it in to you. :)
21st is the day before my final exam.

16-11-2007, 03:25 PM
Hehe, pretty much the same for me. :P
This is a general reminder that I'm seeking content. Please, everybody who I've asked to do stuff -- do it!
If you don't know *how* to do it ... ask for assistance!
If the assistance doesn't work out, ask for more! ;)
If you're currently not writing anything for this edition, get down a 300-word opinion piece or even a (tiny) 150-word review -- just a few moments, find stuff on Experimental Gameplay or somesuch if you need inspiration!
Also, try pimp Dev.Mag at any outlets that you can: websites, IRL places, political rallies or anywhere else that strikes you as remotely interesting or appropriate!
That's it for now. Seriously, if you don't have time to write something big ... write something tiny. I've actually been thinking about the idea of having mini reviews, so if writers want to pounce on those as an even easier alternative to 300-word opinion pieces, take one and run with it!

Neat idea! It should look like a christmas catalogue with pics of Programming Santa and stuff. :P
But I am not too sure how it ties in with the Blue-Pill articles and whether anyone will be able to do it now...

I'd do it rather than the pygame bluepill (or if everyone is insanely lucky in addition to, for now i'll stick to blue pill I guess)
allows me to spread the stuff cause I suck at writing things.
I'm also not sure about getting my article in on time
exam on the 20th and on the 22nd.

Just a reminder that today is deadline for Dev.Mag.
I've noticed that a few of you have already delivered on the goods -- thanks a bunch!
To the rest ... well, I'm not really going to rash anybody until tomorrow or the next day, most likely. Exams tripped me up despite my adamant determination to not have them do so. :P In that regard, can't really do too much with too many articles right now.
Hope everybody's having a good one this time around, and I hope that content comes in soon! I want to blaze through things and see if I can get everything out at the beginning of December. ;)

I contacted the guys from Aquaria about the interview. The one guy (Alec) already filled it out, but the other one (Derek) hasn't. I'll talk to them again. When's the absolute last? The sooner the better, I presume?

Hi guys the link for the Game.Dev forum is outdated on the Dev.Mag Affiliates (http://www.devmag.org.za/affiliates.jsp) page. It should be http://forums.tidemedia.co.za/nag/forumdisplay.php?f=9
Regards,
Ps. Sorry that I'm posting it here but I can't create threads.
I quickly decided to test all the links on the page and the only only other problem is the link to MailOwls blog it seems that it needs to be http://mailowl.co.za

Nandrew, plz let me know if you're getting my stuff. I've been sending it everyday since sunday. It gives me a "failed" error at times. If you don't have my article then plz give me another e mail address to send it to. My internet connection is messed up so I'm using my phone to surf the net and send my e mails-this might be the problem.

UT1 -- sorry, haven't received anything :/
I haven't got any of Fuzzyspoon's stuff either. Has that been done?
Also, I'm craving opinion pieces, so if anybody can fire one of those up, that would be awesome. I like opinionated people. Seriously. ;)
