View Full Version : Music Request for Local Developers
Liszt
01-04-2008, 01:01 PM
Local Developers often lack the talent/ability/skills for composing and creating music for their games. This is where "Liszt" steps in. As a professional musician and intermediate composer, I offer my services to Local Developers (beign a local myself, of course). This thread will deliver quality backtracks/sound clips/ques/ect. to developers. Other composers are also welcome to join the party!!!

At the moment...none! I recently got a MIDI studio (which I am fixing at the moment). Since I've never done music for games before, well... no examples yet. I did some ACID loops and disco, but it all disappeard when my hard drive crashed! :-(. However, I have backup's of MIDI files I composed for a game... until the programmer stopped the game and my music was never used.
BUT not all is at loss. I finished 4 piano Sonata's, studies, solo's and other (availeble as pdf), studies for guitar, pieces for recorder and a piece called "A Natty Rag" for Piano and Trombone (which the audience warmly welcomed at my Newcastle Piano Concert recently).
Also, I am currently working on a Concerto for recorder.
With over 70 works done (including a Spanish Dance for Piano that scored 94% at the Eisteddfod), works for numerous instruments, forms and styles, I am to be your composer! From Medival, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Modern, Minimalist, Rock, Pop, Rave, Rag, Impressionist, ect, I can only prove myself in the field of game music in the near future.
I have access to a recording studio in Pretoria for special recordings. If you are interested to hear the remaining... MIDI, let me know. (How do you attach a file??? :-) )

Give me your thoughts. ;-)

I had a listen, the work is really pretty good. I can imagine A Natty Rag in particular working very admirably in a puzzle-type game, something like TIM, or maybe even in Nandrew's Adventures of dislekcia. I look forward to seeing what you will do for the developers around here.

I intended the music for que's. Then again, it was for a film, not for a game. A Natty Rag will do good for a game, but I would like to have the opportunity for large projects some day. With large orchestra's, choirs ect.
I am excited about local developing too and can't wait for my first commision!!! :-)

I really like the "Darth Plageoius" and "Yoda and Tar Avec" pieces - I think that either could work really well in a game, especially the initial segment in the case of the former.
The sound effect also works very well, I think. ^_^
Thank you very much for offering your services - having a potential source of music is a valuable thing, I daresay. ^_^

I'm listening to your music now and I like what I'm hearing. That being said, I myself will never commision you since I like to compose my own music for my games even though I am severely outclassed by your work. However, if you ever need a trumpeter contact me. I'm doing grade 8 this year so I know my way around the insrument even though I am not a professional (and so don't ask for professional fees).

Yes... perhaps. BUT anyone can be a meistro. Ever tried putting emotion over into harmony/melody? YES! Even YOU (dear reader) can be a composer!!! Here, challenge me any way you like. I will prove to you (dear reader) that classical music is the fond foundation of the modern musical society... from the Beatles to Metallica... ALL are bound by the rules of Bach. Mwahahahahaha!!!!!

Have you read Godel Escher Bach? Great book, the power of those ideas scares me :)

Have you read Godel Escher Bach?...
No, J.S. Bach was the master of Baroque (like Frans Liszt said, he is above us all!!!). The prinicples of Harmony J.S. Bach mastered and these rules are STILL used by modern musicians. Hahahaha!!!
J.S. Bach is also the master of counterpoint and polyphony. None exceeded in originality in terms of polyphonic music... and for the furthest, most extensive use of advanced counterpoint, listen to the best: J.S. Bach! Brandenburg Concerto's, Italion Concerto (for harpsichord), Violin Concerto's, Christmas Cantata's, Organ Fugues, The Well Tempered Piano... Mwah!
The divinity of V15, the harmony of open chords, I - V; I - IV; the power of i - VI; the blessed virginity of I - V - vi... oh, holy Haydn!
J.S. Bach is master above us all... even Metallica have to admit it! Mwahahahahahaha!!!! It is true: harmonic progression, diminished chords, augumented chords, Dominant 15th, Dominant 7th, IIIo... ALL use the principles J.S. Bach embraced.
The secret of J.S. Bach's mastery in music was his dedication to God. How many compositions does not bear the name "Jesu, joy of my desire", "Jesu, mein Freund", "Jesu, mein beliebte"... he dedicated his life to God and God rewarded him handsomely... J.S. Bach is above us all...

If I'm not much mistaken, Dislekcia was referring to this book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godel_escher_bach). While I haven't yet read it myself (although I think that I want to do so at some stage), based on what I see in the Wikipedia article (and, I think, my impression prior to reading that) it does, in fact, refer to Johann Sebastian Bach. ;)

Your music sounds good and its nice that you can
create so many different styles as you mentioned.
Maybe you can try this out.. Go to http://www.garagegames.com
and create a new account which will allow you to post a blog,
and then "advertise" your service there too. There's a lot of
indie developers there. You could also make use of their
Jobs section http://www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=marketplace&page=jobs
to find a contract.

I cast a critical ear on artists who rely on smooth samples and flashy techniques to mask lacking talent. Your melodies are solid. Your twisting of the humble MIDI format is easy on the ear. Doing game music will be a snap for you and I'd most definitely pay for your services should the day come when my finger is pulled from my arse long enough to finish coding something.

You obviously know your music very well, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your compositions. Darth Plageoius reminded me a lot of Ultima 7, the medieval style to it. I enjoy composing for my own games, so I shall not be needing your services, but I thoroughly encourage others to make use of them!
The big thing about making game music is to set moods, mostly a single type of mood for an entire piece (for most games), and the songs should mostly be easy flowing (fewer abrupt stops and changes in style).

After 3 commisions (the last two was hell difficult!) my commisioning seems a bit dry.

Piano Concert in Pretoria in November - FREE TICKETS TO NAG MEMBERS!
Once I settle on a date, I will let you know. Its a classical concert with a very private audience. The second half of the concert will be - fun! I hope! Hehe.
Fuzzyspoon: Let's hear some music? Yeah. Its a pity I don't OWN a recording studio, but hey! Everything is possible. I am working on La Campanella (Liszt), Moonlight Sonata: 3rd Movement (Beethoven), and 2nd Piano Concerto: 3rd movement (Mendelssohn).
I'm doing my recorder gr8 this week (friday).
Should the concert in november don't realise, don't be cross with me. :-) FREE TICKETS TO NAG MEMBERS. Or forum members anyway. Hehehe. :-)

Meanwhile, I'm open, waiting for new commitions. (Strange what a tag can do to a person?)

Hey Liszt, nice to see this thread back. Do you have an exact date for that concert you keep talking about yet? I'd really like to know all the details so I can see if I can go watch.
I've been using Sibelius myself for a while now and I agree, it is amazing. Really useful. From a game development point of view, it is really useful for exporting midi but it's also nice if you want to print out something that you've composed. I find it really useful that you can set it up transposing instruments and then toggle the view between concert pitch and the sheet music that the musicians would read.
