That, is damn cool, if I say so myself. Great homage to Tumiki Fighters.

The demo crashes, FileNotFound error when I debug. I'm guessing that you've hard-coded a path somewhere...

Sorry guys, forgot to mention that it needs to be extracted to c:\engine for now...

Hehe, thanks Miktar :)

NEW DEMO (http://gamedev.openhazel.co.za/filecloset/data/files/155/demo.zip)

Ugh, sorry people, I forgot to include the Tao DLL's. I've uploaded a new version of the demo that can be unzipped anywhere - I took out the hardcoded paths. Please give this new version a spin and tell me if there are anymore problems :/ Thanks again for taking a look :)

Cheers

The new version still doesn't work for me...

kurtkz

@ Coolhand:

Does the game spit out any errors?

Nandrew

Also having a problem with the game. Vista just tells me that the program stops working. Haven't even managed to get past the command line window. :(

kurtkz

OK, all fixed now. I forgot to include the Tao dependencies. It should work fine now. Thanks to everyone for highlighting these problems :)

Pretty cool... but too short!!! ;)

@ Coolhand:

awesome. Finally :D Thanx for the kind words. Yup, it was actually only meant to be a techdemo, but I decided to continue work on it. All the editors are done so it's just a matter of sitting down and forcing myself to make stuff :)

Nandrew
20-08-2007, 06:05 PM
Perhaps the most difficult part of it, eh? :P

Had a lotta fun with this demo, thanks. :)

This is pretty cool. I havent played Tumiki Fighters though. Love the art style and the capturing the enemies as "weapons".

This saddens me. For some reason I can't get the game to run on my pc. :-( I'll try updating my drivers and see if this changes things.

Anyway, I actually saw your game a couple days ago on one of my frequent trips to Youtube. Didn't know you created it, until I saw your thread. It's really cool to have you here. The game looks like alot of fun. :-)

Hey everyone, thanks for the kind words :)

@ Nandrew:

Yup, that's the stumbling block for me. I've literally made hundreds of prototype games only to lose interest in them when it comes to doing assets. I get bored very easily :P It's a bad habit, I know, but I'm working on it :)

@ Tr00jg:

Do yourself a favour and try out that guy's games. I can't remember the website now, but if u google "Tumiki Fighters" you'll find it. He's made lots of free abstract shooters with very different gameplay mechanics.

@ Cyberninja:

Mmm, that's weird...do u have .NET 2.0 installed? That's the only thing I can think of as it doesn't use shaders (actually nothing above OGL 1.4 functionality). Also, that's awesome about Youtube :D How'd u find it there though? Were you doing any particular search?

Ciao

@Kurtkz: I was looking for some inspiration for my next game; a scrolling shooter. So I just typed "scrolling shooter" in Youtube, and lo and behold, your game popped up on one of the pages. ;-) I was attracted to the visual style you used. So I clicked it and the rest is history.

Edit: You were right. I just downloaded NET.2.0 and the game works perfectly now. Good stuff! :-)

kurtkz

So...does anyone have any ideas about gameplay mechanics I can incorporate? Or are the one's that are in there sufficient to make a fully playable game?

Also does anyone have any ideas as to modular enemy designs I could use? I'm a bit stumped here. At first I was thinking I would model cellular organisms, but I'm not so sure...

@ dis:

Awesome, thanks for the link :)

@ Cyberninja:

Hehe, nice one :) Glad it finally works.

I have to hand it to you, this is pretty slick! I wouldn't mind seeing a slightly longer version though... *nudge*

Hey guys, i'm going to upload the full game tomorrow (with title, menus & hiscores) with the editors. Kinda losing interest in this game and i'm keen to get back to work on the cricket game. I'll put up a website where you can post content like levels & enemies if theres enough interest.

kurtkz
21-08-2007, 09:57 PM
@ Untouchable: yup, unfortunately you need .net 2 to play it :-)

Haha :) Dunno if I'll get time to finish this thing at the moment. Working on finishing up my masters handin & working full time. I'll definitely work on putting out the editors though. That way anyone who's interested can finish it for me :P

OK, OK. I get the picture. Me no finish = mob of devs outside my door :P Seriously though, I'll try to make a plan wrt to finishing it, but if anyone of you KIND souls wouldn't mind helping out on level & enemy design and some background art, that'd be great :)

Eissh, sorry dude. I'd like to help out, but I'm rather swamped with my own projects at the moment. Sorry man. :(

I see we've reached an understanding. ;)

Please do release the editors. I'm sure everyone would like to see them, if not to finish your game for you, then out of "professional" interest.

Uhmmm...so these guys (http://www.blackpurple.net/) contacted me, said they liked my demo movie and asked if I wanted them to do some music/sound effects for me...has anybody heard of these guys?

dislekcia
24-08-2007, 12:18 PM
Nope, never heard of them, but that's not surprising given the sheer number of people doing cool things online.

I say cool! Run with it. Chances are that they want something complete that they can lob around as a portfolio piece, which should be exactly what you want too, meaning you don't have to pay them and you'll both push each other to finish the game. What have they said so far?

kurtkz
24-08-2007, 12:21 PM
@ dis:

Yup, that's pretty much what's going to happen :) Just got a reply from him now and he seems really keen to get his sound out there. Although he's already done some big stuff apparently. So...hopefully this'll get some impetus behind the project.

dislekcia
24-08-2007, 12:34 PM

I think we need to use that avenue more :)

kurtkz

Yup, youtube is definitely a good promotional vehicle considering the amount of traffic they get every day. Just make sure to enter a good variety of tags though :P

Tr00jg
24-08-2007, 04:01 PM
Argh... Their site is unreadable (blackpurple). Yeah, YouTube is a great way to showcase your gameplay, especially for Roach Toaster 2 since the graphics dont really say much about the gameplay.

Hi everyone, this project is still under development. I've been adding sound & music triggers but am sill in desperate need of designs for enemies and bosses. If anyone has any rough sketches, scans or bitmaps you'd like to contribute please email me. There are currently 2 small-time studios working on the sound and music and I hope to complete and release the game (for free) before December.

Cheers
Kurt

PS. Also, are there any good, free (or cheap) SA web hosts?
