Hi there, I decided to let my other idea go. It doesn't work too well. Instead I decided to start with a pet simulator aka a Tamagotchi clone. It's still on proto but it might work. :)
My plans:
Like any ordinary tamagotchi, you will need to look after your pet. Feed it, take it for walks, pick up after it, play with it etc. Based on how well you look after it, it's appearance will change in many ways. Don't worry though, it won't take 24 hours for it to age one year, I'll make it less.

Notes on alpha version:
- Pet starts in egg and hatches
- pet can be given food or pet can dance by pressing arrow keys.
- pressing the right arrow button will show the walking animation, but it doesn't work well so push it at own risk ;p
In the next version:
- Take your pet for a walk
- Better background colours (Hurts my eyes)
- More animations
- Aging (MAYBE)
- POO (Maybe)
- status feature with bars/numbers/icons
Any comments, questions and suggestions are welcome as always. ;)

The funny smiley face gave me a good laugh. :D
Are there things you plan to add that make this a little different from the tamagotchi stuff?

Quite good. I'm developing a platform game and sometimes my character just keeps on walking until it leaves the whole frame. Still working on that. . .

I'm thinking of a few, but no solid ideas yet. Here are some of my ideas though:
- A battle system (probably won't happen, although it would be cool)
- Speech recognition* (probably won't happen, although it would be cool)
I can't remember my other ideas atm, really need to learn to write them down :(

Best to put that in the GM Help thread or look up some tuts, can't help you much there. Although you can create two vertical lines (sprites) at the borders and set the collision check so that it stops movement or reverses the direction. ;)

I really like this concept. One consideration I'd take into account, though, is that unlike a standard Tamagotchi, players on cellphones most likely won't keep the game running 24/7.
What you'll need to do is adjust the gameplay so that it's optimised for session-based behaviour rather than constant running. I'd keep this in mind if you plan to implement "real-time" aging and the like. ;)

So I could maybe make it age every ten minutes of gameplay instead of 24 hours?

In another cellphone game I checked out briefly with a similar concept, the game seemed to save the time/date when you closed the game. When you opened the game again, it'd calculate how long you'd left the game closed, and age your pet accordingly (taking into account that it would effectively have been neglected during that time, so mine almost always starved to death :P).
I found this ridiculously annoying... but then I found tamagotchi's annoying for the same reason. And it's also why I don't have a pet. :P

I also found Tamagotchis quite irritating. I dislike games like those. However... PossiblyFunNotMissionCriticalButNiceToHaveHINT: Something that annoyed me with PC games based on the same principle was that I couldn't set my PC clock back, start up the game and have the village/animals grow younger.

Text update
Hi there, here is a text update on how far I've come since the last version:
- Creature hatches
- Creature eats, walks and plays (Not very graphical yet)
- Creature has ONE health bar, various actions do various stuff to the health bar. (No more love, play, health etc etc etc bars)
- It evolves
there are more but I can't think them all up, (family's on my pc :( ) but I'll upload it when I have the chance.
PS: I hate dial-up...

you could try add some sort of online play/connectivity. just something simple would still be very cool.
another idea you could try is make a small grid-based world that you live in. the whole world could just be one house, but that would allow you your pet to 'explore' areas and add a new dimension to the game.

Oh boy, Holidays totally raped my dev time, and our Telkom line was off. But I'll upload my entry soon for play anyways. The coding I did, I didn't do for nothing so I'm uploading it nonetheless. :) WATCH THIS SPACE

Sorry for the double post, but here it is : Pet In My Pocket (petinmypocket.zip - 1.44MB)
Enjoy :)
PS: I didn't have time to put in a help screen, but I think it's pretty self explanatory. The scolding option doesn't work either. :(
