I found this article on the beginnings of World of Warcraft.
I haven't finished reading it yet. I found it interesting to see what was purposeful and what they stumbled upon by accident. I guess they needed hard work and a bit of luck to make something that became such a phenomenon.

Whoa! Fascinating read!
It's incredible how they managed to create such a success out of it by basically just thinking things up as they went along. Amazing.
Would love to read the next parts. Its great to see how much they learn from one expansion to the next. Burning Crusade was way better the Vanilla. And Wrath of the Lich King is just pure awesome. It feels more an RPG with MMO elements. They did a real great job.

Yeah totally. I thought they had a lot of their ideas sorted out long in advance but its amazing what big design decisions they were making even in the last year of development.
I guess at the end of the day we're all human and they had to do it step by step too. They must be so thankful they made the right decisions back then though. I get the feeling that things could have gone either way based on decisions they made in that last year. Really interesting :)
