View Full Version : Procedural geometry - from orbit to surface

I found this in GameDev.net's Image of the Day section. According to the description, the images showcase an engine capable of producing procedural planet features from orbit down to the ground, and do so without apparent loading pauses. Not only that, but it look really good, from the screenshots shown (there are some quite lovely ones in the journal linked to in the post that I link to below). It's very impressive, I think (although I don't know what the system requirements might be ^^; ).

That looks incredible, moreso because it's procedural. I'd love to see it in action though, just to see how seamlessly it really runs.

This demo uses procedural textures. the whole demo (like 10 min movie) is 64 kb with sound. and the tool is available to make your own code based procedural texturing : from here

another great procedural demo i have seen in action is the one introversion is working with,

Indeed - that could be very interesting to see, I think.

Aah yes, Kkrieger - I remember that. Also quite impressive. ^_^

Those entries are very interesting, especially after the first few - thank you very much for linking me to them. ^_^ (Although I'll admit that I skimmed and skipped a little, primarily in the first few entries. ^^; )
The discussion of procedural city generation reminds me of university - I remember reading and together with another guy giving a little talk on a paper on the subject, if I recall correctly. ^_^
(In fact, I wonder if it wasn't the one mentioned in part 6 of the Introversion series...)
I was especially interested in the author's comments on the recursive nature of the patterns that he was perceiving and generating - office spaces, for example, being generated by much the same algorithm as produced street layouts - and his wondering whether those same patterns wouldn't extend down to the level of the desks within those offices.
I wonder whether they might be found lower, too - in us, somewhere, perhaps? Quite possibly in our movements about our cities and buildings.
On an off-topic note, I loved this analogy, when speaking about a particular element of embedding LUA in C++:
which is analogous to programming while sitting on a pile of volatile explosives while spiders crawl over your body. XD

thought it could be interesting.
