View Full Version : Community Ideas : Project SCR

So iv decided to pickup SCR as my full project, leaving all other random things i spend my time doing on the side. Now that i am getting further into gameplay (using XNA now) i am making more arcade style (as its meant to be) and making it less dependant on overkill physics engines, difficult collision problems etc.. It was missing the point.

Now that i have a camera and a player and im moving around in the world im trying to think of ideas for maps. The multiplayer arena section of the game is coming first, the downhill arena section is later but those maps are easier to conceptualise. The thing with a multiplayer arena is the fun element. I think about when we play at lans, and other gaming events. When the map is fun, especially with friends, it is always preferred. This is where community input will be great.

The original map seems a bit small for a crash racer, like theres no real space to slam a good run up to the guy heading for another player. You spend more time navigating corners and avoiding walls. Dont get me wrong , its an awesome map (thanks rev) but im going to have to continue expanding it quite a bit :)
For those who didnt see the newer layouts :

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9720/nightmap3fk8.jpg

It was along those lines at my last revision of this map. The buildings are lacking detail as you may see, but i have decided to go with an outside diner (40's diner) theme here, where it will be a night time map with bright neon signs and what not... The map layout will change quite a bit too, for more flowing gameplay.

The real question :

What kinda settings/environments will this game enjoy. As a player what sort of map would you look out for in crash racer where you push your trolley around like mad into your friends, throwing groceries as weapons and ragdolling over the edges of roofs and onto your friends heads.
The generic ideas, such as "parking lot" or "inside the mall" are already covered, there will be these kinda scenes already .

So, any ideas?
Much appreciated :D

(ps, ill update the SCR thread sometime, when major changes come up seeing as i am keeping updates on http://blog.owned.co.za now instead.)

Hey, looking sweet! Can't wait to play some of this!

An idea for a map?
-A hobo park (dodgy looking cafe, open areas of dirt and grass, benches, rubbish lying everywhere for ramping and stuff, perhaps a homeless shelter, trees, sleeping hobos)
-In the suburbs (houses, ways to get on the roofs of those houses and throw yourself off, skater ramps the skater kids left, ramping down staircases, smashing postboxes, roads long enough to get some speed), if you get the layout right it could work pretty well, I think.

I'll think some more and get back to ya.

- On a California-style boardwalk, pushing over roller-blading babes and hotdog vendors. Alternatively replace with Durban's beachfronts, pushing over crackheads asking for change and dodgy vendors trying to flog you their crap.
- Inside a factory of some sort. Maybe like a glass-bottling plant or similar. There'd be conveyor belts, overhanging hooks, cranes, all sorts of stuff to crash through and battle it out on top of.
- Mandatory paintball-esque arena with chipboard dividers (smash-throughable, of course), catwalks and ramps.
- A stadium (or even ice rink, if you're in the mood for coding the slidy stuff) with access around the edges for one-on-one corridor battles or all-out destruction derby in the centre.
- A hospital, because, come on.
- Inside a giant cubicle farm office, or maybe a few large, connected offices with a nice big lobby between them.
- A multi-level subway station with ramps, lifts, and of course - a couple of long-ass tunnels to really get some speed going.

More will come as I think of them. This game has sounded totally rad since the beginning. Just shout if you need a hand building any of the levels, I'm always keen for some 3D fun.

Sweet! I am grateful The office idea is sick, i love it... I might even start with that one haha. But yea, thanks guys so far the ideas are awesome... And thanks for the offer GeometriX, we will talk more when i have the level loading done 100%. :) Btw, what 3d app would you use? Im using max, which has all my level editor stuff as a user defined property, and it exports these automatically. Im busy listening to some really awesome stuff about level loading from gamefest 2008, so i will post a method which may or may not be independant of 3d app... which, would be awesome.

What i dont want ideas from : other games, especially not scenes resembling any Tony hawk maps, at all. The maps must be unique like the game, ramming a trolley around a hospital and an office is sick! Some ideas i had on other forums was

An abandoned amusement park (win idea is win)
A museum
A traffic Jam (around the cars)

If this is going to be a combat game, you totally need to have the trolley's dent and bend their wires. Also, the worst thing you can do to someone should be either dropping something really heavy in their trolley (like a fat child or sack on anvils) which they then need to try and dump out by crashing into things, rolling or flipping - And you need to be able to give people the squeaky wheel of death to cripple them for a bit ;)

This is an impressive-looking project, Fuzzy - I'm glad that you're picking it up again - and some of the ideas already given sound very good indeed, I believe. ^_^

I don't think that I have much to add at this point, but I do have a few ideas...

First of all, how flexible are your level creation facilities and physics system?

If you have something along the lines of a portal-based system (not a Portal-like system; I'm referring to the level part-connection technique) then you might be able to put together an eternal downhill - essentially a curving, downward-sloping track that never goes back up (unless you turn around). That should be pretty good for speed. ;)

If your physics are up to it, you might create some other... "odd" level types - for example, a level played on a giant sphere, or a level with variable gravity, allowing for situations involving players driving on track sections that are each upside down or on one side from the others' perspectives.

Of course, these don't exactly fit the style that you seem to be going for at the moment, so it would probably be better to have only a few - as few as one or two, perhaps - such levels.

Im glad you're going to finish this off Fuzzy :D

As for settings, im quite surprised it hasnt come up yet, but what about a mall. I have such grand images of stealing trolleys from shops as your trolley gets damaged, and having multiple levels in the shopping center, with wheel chair access in places, and wonderful stair cases to be a bit spiteful. Get a nice big bunch of people linked up and it will be truly epic. :)

yea the grand and epic ideas are welcome. The realistic deadlines and goals will be chosen , though :) and btw, reading is good for the soul.
