Mxit has just released an SDK to enable anyone to make applications for mxit , it includes mxit's secure billing which is quite cool . If anyone is interested about developing for mxit check this out :
http://code.mxit.com

The MXit API allows external developers to develop applications (games, gadgets, etc.) for MXit?s user base. With the ability to use text or graphical representation, the possibilities available to create unique applications are endless. It has an added ability for developers to use our secure Billing API within their applications which will allow them to bill our users for certain features or the entire application.

An external developer can enter into a commercial contract with MXit which will allow the developer to share in the revenue generated from his/her application. However, it must be remembered that applications can be developed without cost attached and can be rendered as a free application for the user. Once an application is launched on MXit, MXit will give its full support to make the application successful, but the true power is in the hands of the MXit user base and applications that engage with them will be successful.

The power of the API is the ability to enable the design applications that are not stand-alone (used in isolation by an individual) but applications that can have a social element attached to them - meaning that these applications have the ability to create unique communities with similar interests

could be quite a neat local gaming distribution.

Ok, I'm confused. How is it that an api written in c#, that uses the .net framework(4.0) is able to program apps for mobile devices? Does a phone even support these platforms? If so then what phones?

I attended the launch of the API in Cape Town today. You can read the press release here (http://www.nag.co.za/2010/10/press-release-sa-entrepreneurs-and-developers-to-host-their-applications-on-mxit). I'll post my full report in the next couple of days and provide a link here when it's done.

I really think this is an exciting opportunity for small developers to make it huge. The numbers that they were talking about can make for some serious money to be made. And now is the time to do it. The longer you wait, the more saturated the market will become.

Seriously?

The API is for communication with Mxit's servers and services. If you read the site I linked to, you'll see that you're supposed to host code running the API hooks on your own server, letting that talk to Mxit. Code implementing the API is never supposed to run on phones directly, you're not producing apps with it. The examples that run within Mxit are literally pulling what to display directly off your server.

Yeah, should have looked before posting, my experience with this sort of development is null. Anyways got some basic stuff running with the API, and just thinking of some clever ways to take advantage of the platform. It's not well documented so you got to look at the examples they give with the API to be of any use. Also their documentation is just a reference, all the comments used to describe functions are very vague and serve little purpose in telling you what is going on.

So anyone using this yet ? I'm personally getting a simple little game of hangman going to test the waters .
