GGJ starts at 5pm (in your time zone) on January 29th and goes for 48+ hours through January 31, 2010.
I know we had an entry from CT and an unofficial one from PTA in 2009 but does anyone know if a varsity or group is entering Jan next year? Was it even worth it?

Hello,
The Computer Science Department at the University of Cape Town will be hosting the South African leg of the 2010 Global Game Jam, from 29-31 January 2010. More details on the event can be found at http://globalgamejam.org/. Additional information will be reflected on the SA Game Jam web site (http://globalgamejam.org/sites/uct-game-jam ) as well as the locally hosted site (http://www.afrigraph.org/global-game-jam-2010 ) closer to the event date.
Please note that the event is open to anyone! So feel free to bounce this email to your friends or associates.
Please note that you will need to create an account at (http://globalgamejam.org) and then register on the SA Game Jam web site (http://globalgamejam.org/sites/uct-game-jam) in order to participate at the SA Game Jam event. I may require additional information to manage local registrations - if so I will send out emails to those registered on the central site closer to the time of the event.
Regards,
Patrick Marais
SA GGJ organizer
We'll be at the UCT event :)

Just got an update via email about the Global Game Jam event at UCT, so looking forward to this!
Hi All,
If you are receiving this email, you have most likely indicated an interest in participating in the Global Game Jam. While many of you have registered already, I'd like to make sure that everyone who will be there has registered at the official game jam web site before arriving . To do this, just visit http://www.globalgamejam.org/ and create a profile. Make sure to indicate that you will be participating in the Cape Town Jam - "UCT Gam Jam" on the Jam location list.
Having done this, I'd appreciate an email to myself (patrick@cs.uct.ac.za) which states
1) Your Full Name
2) Your ID number (if you are not a UCT student - we will use this to give you access to our computing/network infrastructure)
3) Any dietary preferences you may have.
This will help us ensure that you are fed during those long gruelling hours of jamming!
You can find more current info on the local web site for the Jam: http://www.afrigraph.org/global-game-jam-2010
Note that some of this info (e.g. license agreement) was lifted from last year's Jam. According to the organizers the license will be Creative Commons, with all that entails for access to code etc. There is nothing to stop you, however, from taking your idea further and turning it into a commercially viable game. The game still belongs to you, the developers.
I will modify this info when I have the final version(s) from the organizers.
Please also do make an effort to come if you sign up: last year we had a lot of people sign up, and only a handful pitched. This sends the message that SA has no interest in such things and makes it harder to justify running a subsequent Jam.
Hope to see you all there!
Patrick
GGJ SA coordinator
There are also rumors of prizes locally this year via the FB event (http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?tid=1312596968086#/event.php?eid=244914306888), including a possible Xbox 360.

Awesome stuff, looks like we going to have a much bigger jam this year than the one last year. Maybe this time my team won't ditch me after the first night ;p

Well, we tried to long-distance-jam with you guys last year, which resulted in this little bugger (http://forums.tidemedia.co.za/nag/showthread.php?t=9466). Looking forward to being in the same venue this year. Unfortunately we won't be able to join in on the practice session next weekend, seeing as we're in PTA then.
P.S. Don't sign your posts here, we can tell who wrote what from the user box ;) Friendly warning, usually you'd just have gotten an infraction.

My bad, it's a force of habit ;)
Pity you guys can't make the practice session.
Anyways, see you at the Jam, if it's anything like last year it'll be a blast.

Indeed, the Jam was friggin' awesome. I strongly encourage everyone to play our game, it's basically Memento in game form.
I'd also like to direct some attention to PhillyT's game (http://globalgamejam.org/2010/press-tilda) which was arguably the best game of the SA leg.
[EDIT]
Here (http://globalgamejam.org/sites/uct-game-jam/games) are all the UCT games.

Was awesome event, bit hectic on the sleep (I like my sleep :D ) .. but I really enjoyed it. Was great seeing some old faces and meeting new people. Gratz to all the teams who entered, the ideas that was presented where really cool.
[edit]
I have just posted a little article on the event over at GamedevSA. I am not much of a writer but you can check out all the games and some photos from the event, enjoy ;)

Just wanted to say it was fantastic meeting yous that are on these forums at the Jam. That was the highlight for me.
In fact the whole Jam was a really friendly and fun affair with awesome people. And the games were impressive too. Even though there were those that shunned middleware, all the games sparkled with potential.
By the way. I feel YouDunIt really lends itself to a Beneath a Steel Sky version, so much could be done story-wise. I would really like to play it anyway. The concept was by far the most amazing at the Jam and with a concept like that a game could go really far.
Looking forward to next year!
Also I do answer to Philley-T, but only in games and forums that reject any further characters.
