View Full Version : Dev.Mag Issue 17 prep: rAge edition!

Hey guys,
Dev.Mag 16 will be done when it's done. I'm afraid that's all I can promise, because as mentioned before ... well, content has been sorely late in arrival, and I can't really get numero 16 out soon enough. Know that it *is* going to arrive soon, but for now we really need to discuss the rAge edition ...
rAge is like our Christmas. It's our big time of the year. So I wanna make sure we get the rAge edition of Dev.Mag going smoothly. First off, although it's going to be released via the Internet at month's end (as per usual), it's actually going to be finished in time to be available at rAge itself. This means: no content delays. In fact, if possible, I want stuff in *before* the 14th so that we can sort the mag out in time. It must be awesome. It must make the brains and eyes of its readers melt from sheer awesomeness. I want this edition to be the uber-mag, and hope that everyone is sufficiently inspired to make this happen!
Some of the things that I'm looking at, here:
(1) Wicked new design (TM)
As a cheeky little part of my University portfolio, I'm working on a redesign of Dev.Mag for the new edition. Don't look so frightened, my skilz have improved since ... well ... that forgettable cover from Issue 1 that I originally proposed (sheesh, remember how long ago that was, people?). The work has just started, but whatever the case may be I'm going to check with Cyberninja for approval -- so rest assured that our new look will be safely respectable no matter what!
(2) The 300 campaign.
This -- is -- SPARTAAAAAAA! Well, not quite. The 300 in this case refers to 300 words. Not everybody writes for every edition (it's usually a core of very regular writers accompanied by a vast plethora of on-off contributors) but for this super-special rAge event, I want everybody to combine their firepower at the same time and write at least 300 words each. That's enough to make, say, a small review, or perhaps an opinion column. Maybe even a mini-tutorial. 300 words ain't a lot, seriously. Not when you have two weeks to do it, and not when you're able to write on whatever you want (well, with some limits. We're not a XXX publication, after all). As an additional incentive, I want to see what I can do about reimbursing writers who get their stuff put into this edition. That could mean monies (though I'm quite poor at the moment, tsk tsk) or free hot dogs and booze when I meet you at rAge. Either way, I want to see what I can do about giving something to all the hard-working peeps who have been helping with the mag all this time.
(3) YUO! (sic)
I want as many people as possible to (a) submit a suitable photo or image and (b) give me a small 100-word writ on the following:
Name, age, location (sometimes known on the Internet as a/s/l)
Something interesting which is connected to both themselves and game development. And I mean interesting. Like, think of something as exotic or unique to you as possible. Your most distinguishing feature, funny anecdote or anything that would make a reader's time worthwhile. Worthwhile, dammit!
All of the collected pieces will be put in as one of the fixed spots in the mag (Feature or Tailpiece, depending on content). The aim of this exercise is to show people that there's a strong game development force existing locally -- like, OMFG, look at all these people hee-ya! And they all do game development! And they're all unique and interesting individuals!
For this reason, you don't even need to be currently writing for the mag. You just have to be somebody who likes making games. Please, though, we'd prefer people who are either South African, in South Africa, or are currently abroad but are actually, you know, South African. We have an international audience, that's true, but we're geared for a local-interest market, and that's what we need to appeal to first and foremost.
----------------------------------
My next post will be a current list of proposed content, as well as writers who are currently working on any given story. This list will be updated regularly, so please refer to it. Also note that you'll have to declare your articles on this thread (regular writers too, please) so that we can get a better sense of who's doing what this month.
Aaaaaand break!

Current content up for grabs in the mag. Will be edited at regular intervals, so please check on this regularly. All articles on this post are up for grabs, unless they're indicated as having a writer assigned. This may be a habit that I keep up with future issues, it's nice and organised and stuff.
Please note that further proposals are requested for each section -- this isn't a cast-in-stone content deal.

I'll pick up those two reviews, on the Game.Dev site (which is an awesome thing for the rAge issue especially), and GGE. And perhaps I'll do one on Kongregate too. Since we did Newgrounds in 16, it seems fair not to ignore Kongregate.
I want to do something bigger too, but I'll get back to that later.

Great ideas Nandrew. I believe you approved of the idea of photoshop tutorials for creating sprites, backgrounds, animations etc for game development. I was expecting to have this done for the issue after rage but I got caught up in it and have done quite a bit of it. The 1st tut is giving the reader a solid, easy to understand core of the general tools that one would use to create custom images for their games BUT the only problem is that the tut is rather long as it covers most vital tools/methods used. I was thinking of splitting it into 2 but the readers might feel that just learning the basics is being dragged out. I think it would be great for the rage issue as the newbies will see that we supply everything needed for normal people to create great games and it would show some variety of the game dev cycle but if you think we should rather leave this till the next issue its cool, I could write something smaller instead for the rage issue. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Regards. -TU1

The basics are always long and drawn out, but it's best to try and get them out of the way promptly. Besides, we aren't against having long articles in the magazine. MOAR PAGES!
Seriously, though, I think this is the perfect issue to start a new series, so I vote you go for the tutorial.

I'll organise an interview with Mr. Bulford. I'll do a Knytt Review as well as a Knytt Stories review (if thats okay).
Since I did some new stuff for RT2, I might revive the series. :P
I might also do an opinion piece.
BTW Nandrew, so I assume the Nifflas interview is going to issue 16?
P.S. For all this awesome-ness, cant we all get a Dev.Mag/Game.Dev t-shirt? I sorely want one. :)

Graaaaaaah! I'd love to do a tutorial on implementing 3D in GM (since a few folks have been bugging me for one), but I'm swamped for the next 2 weeks (Murphy FTL). Consider me added to the tailpeice though. Just don't bother with the photo - snag my ava and use that instead. I'll take care of the 100 words. ;)

Interview is in Issue 16, yeah. ;) Another one that I was waiting on seems to have not emerged at all (damn 16's content woes, it's a cursed edition >.<), so I put that in to replace it.
As for tees ... I think Dis mentioned that he has some spare from last year. ;) Did you not get your paws on one the last time around, from anybody?
I'm going to put you down for that interview as well as the two reviews. Notify me if you end up confirming any of the other content!

Oooh, heck, you sure? :/ Was actually looking forward to seeing a 3D piece myself, that game of yours has been quite interesting (I really need to leave behind more comments on the threads I visit. Lurking ftl). I'm usually against just throwing in 3D for the extra dimension's sake, but this is a comparatively uncommon idea for GM, so ...
I'd still like you to see what you can do about that. And if all else honestly, truly fails, could you write something like an opinion piece or review or anything consisting of a couple hundred words? I'd really like to see the 300 rule honoured as far as possible. ^^

Since we've already covered trig and it's applications for game programming, I'd say the next logical step is to have an article or two about the use of matrices in game development, perhaps focusing on 3D applications.

An opinion piece sounds good for now. I'll try and hack something out later today :p. For what it's worth, I really wanted to do GM3D tut for this issue. The problem is that I still need time to structure it and write something decent, and two weeks or less just ain't enough on top of work and studies (both of which are in semi-crunch at the moment).
Heh, maybe I could present the prototype at rAge as atonement. :p

I have two questions to ask:
*cautiously* I've gotten the impression over my time thus far at Game.Dev, in part most probably due to the open nature of the preparation discussions, that Dev.Mag is open to new writers; this, however, seems unusual to me, and hence I hesitate.
So I would like to ask: is Dev.Mag open to contributions from any member of the community? Or is there an application process that I have missed? I might well be interested in writing something for the magazine (although I know not what at this point, hence my use of "might" instead of "would"), if it is indeed open, and you don't mind potentially sporadic articles.
As to my second question, I would like to know whether the name and personal info request was intended to be directed at all members of the community, or just the writers of Dev.Mag (and not those of us lurking in the shadows, watching your preparations all unseen :P).
Squid

As far as I know Dev.Mag is open to new opinion column writers. I could be wrong though...
Nandrew
03-09-2007, 12:49 PM
Heh, regarding your second query, Thaumaturge:
(3) YUO! (sic)
I want as many people as possible to (a) submit a suitable photo or image and (b) give me a small 100-word writ on the following:
...
For this reason, you don't even need to be currently writing for the mag. You just have to be somebody who likes making games. Please, though, we'd prefer people who are either South African, in South Africa, or are currently abroad but are actually, you know, South African.
^^
----------------
But yeah, for the first query, I suppose there needs to be a clearer explanation of my own goals. Dev.Mag has kinda hit that stage where I want to get a slightly more narrowed, formal and reliable writer base going. This is a matter of organisation -- we've got enough people working, we're not hunting for more contributors and I want to make sure now that the mag is filled with more insightful and relevant content that, to a certain extent, the core group of writers have more control over. Hunting down freelancers and fly-by-night writers is starting to become a problem (notably with Issue 16) and I think that some consolidation is in order. Basically, we've moved past the "survival" stage and now I'm aiming for "sophistication". At this stage, a potential writer is looking at one of two options:
(a) The opinions section. This is wide-open to wannabe contributors and we regularly *encourage* non-writers to have a go at it. It's a great way to test your mettle and if we really like what you write there, we tend to call you back and make you do more stuff for us. ^^
(b) Submissions are always welcome, but I'm starting to get a little more fussy about what I want put into the mag. I want something new and intriguing brought to the table, or something that would be of particular interest to the beginning game developer. This also may sound nitpicky, but the standard of the writing itself now needs to be of a certain level. If you've been checking out the prep threads, you'll see some brilliant ideas that have been brought up, most notably in the beginner's department. Things like tutorials or "blue pill" articles are a great way to go if you want to catch interest at the moment -- for a lot of the other sections, I have some very reliable squaddies already who have been at their jobs for a while and have proven themselves to be trustworthy, and to be sure that content standards are maintained.
This is not to say that we're not an open mag, but it will be more difficult to get in now than, say, a year and a half ago when we were ten pages strong and still scrabbling for volunteers. :P I'd recommend writing an opinion unless you have something particularly mind-blowing up your sleeve (like, head-explodey, wheee!). Not only is it a free platform, but it's a great way to have the community express itself, which is one of my goals.
I think this spiel is important for everyone (writers and non-writers) to pay heed to, because I'm nudging the mag in a bit of a particular direction here and I want to see what people think (heck, you're the guys that do this thing, really). I want to make sure that we're still as down to earth as possible, but at this stage in development I believe that there's a very real need to clamp down a little bit in some areas and try change one or two things. Comments?
Thaumaturge

My apologies for the delay in my responding to this - I seem to have kept forgetting. ^^;
As to writing for the magazine, fair enough - if anything relevant occurs to me that I might want to craft into an opinion piece, I may well do so and send it in. I'm primarily interested in contributing to the magazine off-and-on, and it's nice to know that the opinion section is open to articles. ^_^
As to the photo and writeup, I will try to remember to do so! I have a photo that should, I think, do the trick - it's just a matter of getting around to coming up with 100 words. ^_^

I totally agree with you nandrew, relevancy > quantity and stuff, and with focused guys writing stuff that beats at the door of every reader it will make the sophistication part a lot easier
At least with this here :
because I'm nudging the mag in a bit of a particular direction here and I want to see what people think
im really glad you keeping the vision and pushing for it because quality (which we have lots of) requires constant direction...
One comment i can make or suggest is feedback, maybe for the submission guys who are part of this have a locked forum for them to discuss stuff, or even if a random submission catches your fancy invite them to sit in on the locked forum and give some feedback on it.
I know you arent really here to train people, but lets say we have someone with a wealth of information but no writing skill, he can get tips in the suggestion/feddback thing on his/her articles.
It makes sense to encourage more quality writing if we have editors and writers giving help to the less inclinced writers.
On another point, it encourages the people who submit stuff to be more relevant,
if im watching the threads and this months train of thought is a certain flow, i may have a contribution , but for someone sitting around at home or at work thinking "what on earth could i submit that might make it in to the mag cos its something useful" , where in the locked or forum area could grasp where you want the magazine to be headed...
This is just an idea, i will still continue to submit either way every chance i get, and ill always be behind game.dev.mag(lol) as much as i possibly can. (@nandrew on that thought apologies for my lack of internet and participation, that is now past)
KEep up the GREAT work though guys its awesome...

I do like the idea of a more comprehensive feedback system, and I'd like to make a move towards more open discussion on mag matters, much like there was in the "good old days". A lot of the regulars are comfortable with their articles and what they're writing, sure, but the lack of communication on the public platform could stymy growth.
I'd like people to comment more on the prep threads, even if they know what *they're* personally up to, so that we can get more momentum regarding mag content, and more knowledge pooling.

I dont know if this kinda fits in with the feedback or whatnot, but here is what I feel about Dev.Mag.
To me it is a "store" ground of useful info. ie, if I start working with Blender, I know Dev.Mag has loads of tutorials. I dont usually read each page of it. So in that regard, perhaps we could post a list of all the usefull things in Dev.Mag and which issues they are? It will be a huge task, but that is what I am looking (and most likely other readers as well)... What do you think?
P.S. I've finished the Knytt review, and the interview with Travis Bulford. Ill send them along this weekend when I finish the YUO thing and Knytt Stories review.

Hey guys,
Please note that I'm going to be on the forums rather sporadically for the next week or so. I'm flyingz cross-country and doing werks at some newspaperish places for a 40 hour portfolio requirement (+10 points for making it sound grand and stuff).
Important: This "I wanna have stuff in on the 14th" deadline is pretty sincere. We've got less time from a design and layout perspective to get the mag out this month (it has to be ready *before* the 28th), and we can't pull a stunt like we have with Dev.Mag 16 (which, by the way, should hopefully be coming today).
I won't be here to keep a beady eye on contributors, so please take a look at the content mentioned and find something that you can do well! Discussion on this thread continues as per normal.
Thanks.

NAndrew i know iv asked but i cant conclusivley tell you if my article is in reading or something? like thats also kinda what i meant on feedbck as well, for the submissions (it was too long, you fail at life etc)
If its not cool, i wanna write something else, as i explained my time has passed that of not being able to submit on time due to no internet and slackness, but im way keen to give more.I have been hounding that guy on the multiverse stuff but he has been moving in cape town and getting his new life organised so he has been kinda afk for a bit. im still trying though.
On the other side,
The mag itself is useful. Maybe seeing as we are community driven, we ask the community what they wanna see in the mag as content, and then ask waht can be done about those topics for the next deadline. Cos im pretty sure there is itching topics in the community but it seems they dont suggest what they would like to see :) i agree with you that they must speak up more in the prep threads (including me, not blaming any1) and we can win that way.
its already win, but we could make it epic ;0

I apologise Nandrew, i was heavy sick at the time and was not paying attention to much in fact.
I do remember talking to you and i see its in 16, thanks for the feedback (from then) i checked my gtalk logs and see i was actually annoying enough there.
LOl,
16 is great though, some comments in the thread there. Otherwise, 17 is also gonna kick ass, im gonna submit stuff as well.

No probs.
In the main news of stuffs: tomorrow is content deadline. I wanna start playing with stuff from there, so please get things in timeously -- there's not much of a window between now and rAge, so we need to be on track!
Most important right now, I reckon, is the submission of two types of items:
(1) an article related to Comp 15 and how it went and stuff and things.
(2) people's profiles for the Tailpiece
Please note the following with regards to profiles:
As far as pic is concerned: preferably a head/shoulders photo, though I imagine a fair amount of people will be throwing their avatars into the mix (meh, it seems to happen). The pics are going to be cropped to squares, so you can imagine the sort of shapes and images I'm looking for.
The text is a humble 100 words in length, and consists of your basic details (name, nick, age and whereabouts you live) and a little paragraph about you and game development which will interest readers. Perhaps it's your greatest game development success, or a unique perspective you have on gamedev, mayhaps it's even a (tasteful) rant. Whatever you want, whatever you think will grab attention. As long as it's topical.
Sorry if I've not been doing the rounds all that much for the past week -- I've been buried in some other activities and am only likely to surface later on. ;) Just popping by to make sure that everything's on track, mayhaps I'll read the forum properly in a few days or so.
Good luck for the deadlines.

Oh dear! I haven't gotten around to my submission yet - but 100 words should hopefully not take too long. ^^;
I'll try to have my profile in sometime tonight (I include the early morning as part of "tonight").
Erm... I realise now that I don't know how to submit my piece - do I email it to the address given on the website (the "admin at devmag" address)? If this information has been given, and I have simply missed it, then I do apologise. ^^;

Just popping in quick.
I've just reviewed the articles and I appear to be missing one thing in particular. That being a Blue Pill article.
I'm going to make an open request (wannabe writers, prick your ears) for a Blue Pill submission this month, adhering to the standard Blue Pill format, and to be sent in as soon as possible.
I'd like people to take this piece into consideration -- I'd hate to have a series like this that sputters and dies after only two installations, it's a very nice concept.

On another note, guys, I need them thar profiles. Seriously. The showcase of people needs to be impressive ;)
From what I've seen, there's actually people who have written in the mag this edition who have not sent a profile. Please, fellow-me-hearties, it's just 100 words and a pic, as described. ;)

I've sent my profile to you via the admin email on the Dev.Mag site. Hope my pic doesn't give you nightmeres.
Should I write about my bland(as in nothing exciting happened) experiences writing Typing Tower?

Odd, I sent my profile through the same weekend that the prep thread went up... Oh well, profile sent. Again. :p

@ Shadowmaster:
It's getting rather late for content, so I'm not entirely sure about a postmortem at this stage.
@ Gazza_N:
Thanks, got it.

Oooh, hell, missed this.
Blue Pill is an article series that has two installations so far. You can check them out in the previous editions of Dev.Mag for guidelines. It basically introduces newbies to some sort of program / tool / language / stuff and gives an overview as well as links to tutorials.
Check the articles if you're interested, but you'll need to write something quickly.

Would articles about certain programming techniques count?(Which I might be able to write about at some later stage)

Not for the Blue Pill template.
But if there's something that grabs my attention sufficiently, it can go in as a general design article (tech section has been merged with it starting with Issue 17).

oooh hell ,missed this lol. sigh well, if its not to late nandrew, pm me ill check every few minutes. I can do an article on that irrlicht 3d engine as a tool for beginners, its most languages and is a great library.
Either that, or darkbasic?

irrlicht works.
But now things are getting really late, I doubt I'll be accepting any more content for Issue 17, I'm running my ass off to get the current load fixed up and ready to go. :P
One or two people will have by now seen some of the teaser pages for the new-look Dev.Mag. This may sound cheesy, but I hope it's received well ... I think it looks reasonably pro and the content is practically bulging this edition (holding thumbs for 40 pages, though that may be a leetle ambitious ;) ).
For those of you who aren't going to rAge ... I'm going to try get it uploaded onto the net before I leave for the expo (the mag is being worked on for launch up there, like, on some DVDs or summin or whatever's being prepped ... hopefully). If not, I'll try find some way to swing it across. At any rate, it won't be as late as Issue 16 -- for all intensive purposes, all the work on this thing should be done by Wednesday.

Dear forumites,
Woe upon thee if you haven't handed me a profile yet! I may just try to twist your arm off.
For the record, I have the following profiles. I need the rest by, like, tomorrow latest. Cos that's when I'm finishing the design for that article.
The following are good people. If your name isn't on this list, you're a bad person, or you got lost in transit. Either way, alert me. Preferably by sending in a profile.

Remember. Tomorrow. Latest. I'm a seriously. Let's show readers that South African developers are a force to be reckoned with. ;)
EDIT:
Squid, you're not on the list 'cos I need a piccie from you. I didn't get any with your e-mail.
