The GGJ (http://www.globalgamejam.org/Home.html) is being hosted by UCT locally this year (first time in SA). I'm trying to make sure I can get down there to participate, you should too!
CT guys, what's the plan of action? We need as many people to attend as possible, even if they're only interested in game development and haven't done anything even remotely like this before. The event is friendly like that ;)
Squid, are you going to be in CT by then?
Tr00jg, can you get the Stellies crowd together, make some noise?

It would appear that I'm just missing it :(

Oh my! I'd love to attend this! Only have basic coding experience though...
At the moment, XNA and Java3D will be available for development, as well as OpenGL/GLUT.
Sounds Intimidating. O_o
But if you say it's friendly to newbs, I may just brave it. Now to to get to Cape Town from Durban...
...Insomniac, are you going?

You should be able to bring your own preferred libs/systems with you on a CD, provided they're not copy-protected.
Of course, you could also bring your own laptop, as far as I know. That's what I'll be doing if I can make it.

The did say that you are able to bring you own laptop. I supposed I could bring mine (though I don't know how much good it would do, don't have any development stuff there to help me). Never actually made a game before. Flirted with the idea a couple of times, have journals with sketches & concepts. I've made ActionScript gadgets and things before. Very simple stuff...
Is playing with GameMaker once enough to justify me coming to this thing? I mean, If I'm in a team and have to grind through some code to make something work I would be happy to do that (I design Access Databases for a living - lots of background VBA stuff). I do have some semi decent graphic skills. Check the site I did for my company: http://www.ipeg.co.za
The idea of this thing REALLY excites me! Though will it really be of benefit to someone with my skills, or will I just be out of my depth?

These sorts of things are ALWAYS worth going to. No matter your skill level, you'll learn a lot and have a good time. It's like a longer DevLAN that I don't have to run ;)

Settled. I definitely want to go. Now all I have to do its figure out the details... transport, sleeping, food, accommodation. I also have to tell my teammates that I wont be playing DoTA with them that weekend at FRAG LAN :( Oh well. I'm sure they'll get over it :)
One small request... If I do manage to to make it, please can I be on your team dislekcia ?:D

Okay so I priced flights quickly, but haven't made any bookings yet. I figure all I'd need for food is cash, so that's no problem. There should be halaal food joints in and around the University right?
Big problem though is somewhere to sleep & getting around. I don't know anyone to crash with so I'd prolly have to book in at a bnb or something. Anyone know of places within walking distance of UCT?
Getting around is my biggest problem. Need to figure out how to get from the airport to the University and back again on the sunday. Taxi? Also, if the place I find to sleep is too far away from the campus, then I have to figure out that part too...
Renting a car is out, cause I don't have a drivers :(

*Sigh* Thanks dude, but I'm not gonna go. I got a mail from sadevloper.net. There's a Microsoft Expressions workshop that's running on the 30th here in Durban for the whole day. They're gonna be teaching us Silverlight and stuff. Plus it's at IT Intellect, the college I used to train at, so I can catch up with the dudes there. Plus I don't have to spend R 2000 plus to go to CT...
Though I was pretty amped to go! Just a note to anyone going to CT for this thing, I tried phoning around & alot of the BnB's where fully booked for that weekend.

Aaargh - it's a slightly awkward date for me too, I believe (the Friday, at least). More's the pity, as I think that I'd love to take part in this (especially since it takes place at UCT - it would be nice to see it again). :/
