FNB and Paypal (http://www.fin24.com/articles/default/display_article.aspx?Channel=News_Home&ArticleId=1518-1786_2571566&IsColumnistStory=False)
Hey guys, I see FNB seem to be trying to sort out paypal in South Africa. I don't know a whole lot about it myself but from my limited understanding I'd assume its a big deal for people who want to make Indie Games in SA.
Do you guys have any opinion on it? Is it possibly a huge opportunity to make some money with Indie Games in SA? Does it have too many problems to work for a small Indie group?

It's beyond huge. It'd pretty much be the foundation of a proper home-grown e-industry.

It is great that this is happening but is it really that big a deal? I mean, I could create a merchant account at for example http://www.plimus.com/, www.2checkout.com, and many other. They accept payments from credit card and paypal.

Is Plimus still taking 20%? Does 2Checkout still require a merchant account, or have they managed to move away from that? How are Moneybookers, PayGate and VCS? Not to mention the costs involved in getting income into the country: You end up eating another 15% on average unless you're making huge amounts of sales. Banks in SA also don't understand the online e-sales culture or market, as can be seen by the retarded mechanisms blocking people getting merchant accounts - QCF still can't get one, even after 2 years, we just don't qualify.
PayPal takes 2.6% and it doesn't cost you anything to get that cash into your own bank account in SA. Think about that for a second... Besides making sound financial sense, it's also ludicrously easy to set up, unlike anything else. Meaning that loads of people who were only thinking small or only trying to just scrape by can suddenly do business online without any special training.
I've been very active in trying to get banks and the government in SA to sort out their e-sales bull****, PayPal is the prime mover: if you can get them, you get the best. The most important part isn't the service itself, but the level of understanding of how the online space works that SA banks and institutions just don't have. Try saying "credit card" and "internet" in the same sentence around a bank manager, have fun watching them turn blue and stammering about fraud.
What really interests me is if PayPal does materialise, whether they'll go for mobile payments as well. That cracks Africa wide open...

Yeah, thats the big problem with guys like plimus, etc. the huge cut they take and the trouble you have to go through with local banks, but we where not out of options before paypal comming here, so that should not have been a reason for anyone not trying to get their games sold.
Seeing as its FNB taking the lead on this we will probably need an FNB account to link to the paypal account - when this finally happens?

There is now a date on which we will know whats going on with this FNB and Paypal deal :D http://mybroadband.co.za/news/business/11745.html
Details about the partnership will only be revealed on 25 March, but this invitation all but confirms that local consumers can look forward to getting access to a much wider range of Paypal services in South Africa.

All local users who wish to gain access to South African PayPal accounts must hold an account with FNB and must have access to the group’s online banking platform. In addition to this prospective users must hold a registered South African PayPal account.
suck :(
At this time there are no concrete plans to incorporate other currencies, including the Rand, into the service.
also sucky :(
Otherwise, awesome :D

Been trying to set this up this morning, having a few issues.
1. Folllowing the steps on the FNB website it eventually leads you to Paypal where you must register and create an account.
2. Once the account has been set up, it gives you an option to top-up your paypal account from your FNB account.
3. Clicking on the link takes you back to the FNB website, you login and it refers you back to step 1. where you must create an account. A top-up option is not available.
4. Also, when it refers you back to the FNB site, sometimes you are unable to log in. It just stays at the home page.
I have tried a few times to get this right, on 3 seperate PCs. Perhaps FNB online is having maintenance though nothing is announced.
Just a heads up :)

The accounts only go active as of next month, ie : its a specific "paypal ready" account that i was needing to create. When attempting to at an FNB branch the reply was its only available from next month.

I hope other banks adopt this soon. We'd finally be able to open our doors to overseas shopping. Those of us without credit cards, that is.

That's really not why PayPal has been asked for so much locally, people care about starting small businesses online. If you really need to buy stuff from the interwebs, getting a credit card isn't hard at all. Banks want to give you credit, trust me ;)
Also, I doubt other banks will get in on PayPal any time soon. FNB have an exclusivity deal going that's at least 2-3 years long. Probably much longer... Personally, I'm hoping Google Checkout makes it to SA without the need for a bank partnership and the requisite milking that goes with that.

Still, you get guys like me who won't trust themselves with credit cards, so it's still a really awesome option, but I hear you on the small businesses thing.
