Thanks for all the entries and enthusiasm everyone, Comp 15 is now officially closed and I've got as many entries downloaded as possible. We've got 15 playable entries to judge this time around (beating the number of entries in Comp 10 - our previous cash prize competition - by 1) and only 5 entrants that didn't manage to submit a download.

Personally, I think that's awesome. Only Comp 8 had more entries and that's because we demanded two from everyone ;)

In the wake of Comp 15, August will be a month for everyone to sort out their sleeping patterns again and mess around with their own game concepts that they're keen to work on, I know some of you have ongoing projects that the competitions tend to interfere with... But September means that Comp 16 will be happening, just one month before rAge. I promise we'll have something special for that!

So thanks to all who entered, congrats to all that learned something and kudos to all that stuck it out and produced something playable. Don't lose momentum just yet ;)

Thanks for running the comp, Dis, and for securing ye Grand Prize of Many Gold Coins. The premise of the comp was a hell of a challenge, but that made it all the more satisfying to work on. I wouldn't want to be one of the judges on this one though...

Oh, most importantly - here's hoping that all the new guys that joined for Comp 15 are going to stick around!

Pretty please? ;)

Thanks Dis for driving our community, and for the Comps, this has been my first entry, but definitely not my last! :)

Cant wait for the next one...

Best luck to all the entrants, its been fun competing!

Thanks Dis, weird topic, but I ended up learning quite a lot from the community!!! Thanks all you guys, I really needed the help!!!

I enjoyed this contest. First time in a while I got a game done.

Thanks D for the effort and the time you put into the community.

However I'd love a really simple theme again sometime! :)

Funny you should mention that - check out the articles on the official site (http://www.gamedotdev.co.za) for details on some of the earlier comps. Take special note of Arkapongtris. ;)

That was a most enjoyable competition! I'm very much looking forward to Competition 16. ^_^

Many thanks, Disleksia, for running the competition! It's much appreciated. ^_^

By the way, was my submission considered to be valid? I'm guessing that it was disqualified, either on the grounds of the little file path bug that I mentioned in my final post in my competition thread on the old forum, because of my forgetting to edit my first post instead of my last, or, more likely, because of my forgetting to include a readme file... but it's worth checking, just in case. ^^;

I don't think that any disqualification decisions have been made yet... Generally we don't disqualify entries anyway. I just sort of assume that people messed up and go from there, hoping that next time they'll figure it the process out properly ;)

Plus hopefully the reasoning makes sense, it's not just pointless red-tape for the sake of it.

Is the readme.txt necesary if the game starts by telling people how to play, and thecontrols involved?
also as a general practice not necesarily for the competitions?

dislekcia
06-08-2007, 02:48 PM
A readme.txt is always a good idea, as is having introductory tutorials to explain how the game works... There are best practises in both, but generally you can't have too much supporting info (as long as people can bypass it if they want to).

The readme.txt is pretty much the bare minimum in terms of help though. I've had competition entries where I had no idea what to do and why, because there was no explanation anywhere. Turned out that the original creator thought that it was obvious to push things like F5 and Ctrl at the same time, etc ;)

Ok, I'll make note to include the following from now on:
- Readme.txt
- Tutorials in game (if possible)
- Way of bypassing the tutorials if they are added.

@ dis: I'm wondering, can you tell us how do you rank the games for the contest? Also if possible, can you tell us how far are you with the ranking process?

PS have you read my PM?

CiNiMoDZA

Please not!!!!!

Relized a little mistake in Elkwood High!!!

When you go to the maths room! There is supposed to be a chalk board on the right wall! I accidentally deleted the sprite! Just collide with the right wall to start the lesson!!!

I judge according to the initial criteria posted in the competition thread... I'd dig those up for you but I'm in a hurry right now.

Plus I look at gameplay complexities like emergence, learning curve, integration, reward scale and reward frequency. Then I ignore all that and go on gut feel and shout a lot :)

Or are you arranging to do the presentation on the Telly? Cool!

Oh umm... Random thing. Just a heads up. If you ever need someone to "present" something on telly, like star in an ad or something for Game.Dev, Im *cough* there. lol.

I reserve the right to wear a paper bag over my head if:
(a) I do, miraculously, end up winning something
(b) The prize giving is televised
(c) There are no cheese cubes and champagne to necessitate its removal.

I know this might be pre-mature, but, when does the next comp begin?

Competition 16 will start on the first of september and be a simpler theme than Comp 15 was. It'll end to coincide with rAge...

Comp 15 news: The judging is done, I just need to run the final announcement text past Mindset and then you'll all know who managed to get where. The prize-giving will be at rAge, hopefully all the winners will be there to receive their prizes :)

CiNiMoDZA

So does that mean that you gonna announce the winners at rAge, like last year, or will you let us know before hand :P rAge is far away from Durban :(

Nope, I'll be announcing the winners soon, there are a few things left to sort out first. The prizegiving will be at rAge, but the winners need to know who they are so that they can make sure they're there ;)

Hoping against hope! XD

For myself, however, I can be patient, I feel, but am nevertheless looking forward to finding out who won...

(I started writing mini-reviews on the various entries (my own excluded, of course) for the "Who would you like to win?" thread; perhaps I should finally get around to finishing that...)

[edit]I only just noticed the Competition 15 results sticky, so don't mind me! XD;

Heh, I realise that now - I haven't been reading the forum for the past few weeks, however, and I don't think that the results were out when I disappeared from the forum.

I'm guessing that it was primarily tiredness that resulted in my not noticing the sticky when I logged in tonight.

I got credit for allowing the player to set the player character alight, so I'm happy! XD

I've done a blog post with all the games from Comp 15 on my blog The Mailowl Scrolls. Check out the link here (http://mailowl.co.za/wordpress/?p=159). If your game is not the competition entry, let me know and I'll update. Also if you can give me a link to where you are talking about further development on your game, I'll add it.

Thaumaturge
28-08-2007, 09:10 PM
That's very cool, Fengol - thank you for doing it! ^_^

I'm afraid that I currently have no plans of further developing my game (at least not in the near future), no link from my end, I'm afraid.

[edit] You have quite an impressive geographical spread of visitors by the way, to judge by the little map shown on that page.

Competitions are very flexible, it's very difficult *not* to qualify. ^^
