The Global Game Jam (http://www.globalgamejam.org) went down this weekend. Unfortunately Aequitas, Nandrew and myself weren't able to make it down to Cape Town, where the local leg was being held at UCT.
So we organised to "tele-compete" and unofficially made our own entry up here over 48 hours. Our final deadline (given when we started) was 5pm and we just managed to run over by 10 minutes or so :(
However, we really like our game and thought you might too ;)

Artillery retaliates after being attacked by a suicide bomber
Here's the brief we received:
1. A complete play session must always last 5 minutes or less.
2. The theme of the game should be: "As long as we have each other, we will
never run out of problems."
3. Choose ONE of the following adjectives to incorporate in your game (each
team chooses which one to use): affectionate, patriotic, or missing.
We picked "patriotism" and went with two warring states having a never-ending supply of problems until one of them is destroyed... Of course, the whole point of the game is that no side is ever going to win unscathed. As the player, you get to decide what resources are dedicated to: Defensive or attacking options; On both sides!

You can grab 48hr War from this link (http://www.gamedotdev.co.za/files/48hrWar.zip), enjoy!
Nandrew and Aeq handled the coding, I handled the graphics for a change and Nandrew supplied the sound expertise (you're surprised?) ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA "Ooh a fancy logo!" Please tell me that'll be QCF's slogan going forward.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (again) as I'm posting this the main menu starts complaining that I'm taking too long!

I do have a complaint. It's a little weird that you click on the pile of cash, release, move the money and then click again. I keep expecting to drag it and if I release in a blank area it returns to the original position.

<snotty bloggers voice>48hr War is a look at the Israeli conflict (title taken from the 7 Day War) made by people who've clearly never been to the country or experienced the trauma and hardship that real people face. In a game that has no clearly defined goals or offers any means of peacefully settling the dispute you can send suicide bombers to blow up towns or drop bombs on defenceless people. The developers soul are only marginally saved by insulting the player, disclaiming them "mad" when one side's cities are all destroyed. I will be praying for them at my next bible club meeting.

Ohsnap! 7-day war reference is hackshully just a coincidence -- our original GMK prototype file was called "48hrWar" as a description of the competition environment, and we kinda just weren't inspired to think of a better title when it came to building the title screen. :P

I believe this game can be summed up in two words:
"Sploosh! Eeee!"
That is all.

Hey very nice Dislekcia,
I was wondering if I could make it one of the UJ campus game in your name ofcourse?
The whole campus has a network-drive where we share game and stuff...

Not quite sure what you mean there... If you want to edit the code and make the game about something else, sure. That's why we released the source. Just credit us with a "based on an original game by blah, blah and blah.
If that's not what you were asking, what were you asking? ;)

I think he's asking if he can put your game on the UJ campus network drive to share with other students.

Ah, right :) Yeah, sure you can put it on there... It's a free download after all. Not sure how much the game will make sense to pickup players though, the goal is rather abstract ;)

The gamers range from the novice to common NAG gamer and even developers like us ;). Besides we're academics, we like to read and delving in abstract materials anyways !

Actually, we've been in contact with Patrick since day one. That's how we got the competition topic.
If you want to check the three officially credited UCT game entries, they're listed on the site.
