Recently I have being building a new game maker game. It is based on the real "Battle Ships" game except that you play the computer.
This is what I have come up with: (1.1MB)
OLD VERSION:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/ahf0e5e/n/Battle_Ships_exe
http://www.filesavr.com/battleships
NEW VERSION:
http://www.filesavr.com/battleships_2
Please let me know what you think of it.
EDIT: Forgot to include in the manul, "R" restarts the game.

I have to say this is very fun and addictive! I also smell the mark of a Popcap type casual game here! I like the fact that you don't put down ships and the kind of radar at the beginning of the game but it's a race against the score clock that keeps me playing trying to get my best score
Can I make a suggestion however and suggest that you add hidden powerups for the player to find. e.g. Hide a powerup that allows the player to use a 5 bullet star as one shot and instead of having the radar at the beginning of the game, make that a powerup the player can find. You can also give the player back some time for one power up.
Depending on how you want to go with this, there's a lot of potential to exploit here, make more prototypes with different features and share to see what sticks.
Well Done :D

Hey thanks, I'll start working on that idea.
EDIT: i'm also going to put a time limit to prevent the user clicking on the radar blocks as they appear.

Could you please upload it somewhere else? Waiting 30 seconds to be told I'm busy downloading too many things at once is not cool. (It was my only download =/ )

I have a 5 or say randomly placed "mines". When they are clicked on they instantly show the location of the other ships, exactly like the radar. Do you think I should rather give extra uses to the radar than instantly activate a free radar?
I prefer to have it go off instantly as it is not expected and often the player will miss where the ship locations are.

I don't think you should have the first radar, cause it makes it too easy and the random sonar items should only do a 5x5 grid centered on themselves to show ships in their area as supposed to the whole grid.
It should go off instantly as player's will learn to play attention to the game. Remember also that later you'll have audio queues giving extra information about what's going on.
Is it on purpose that the player can hit the same location multiple times, wasting ammo?

Yes, I did that pacifically so it prevents the player from going on a wild clicking expedition, and the sooner he or she runs out of ammo the better. (To teach them a lesson :P). Also it forces the user to pay attention.
Here is my latest edition: http://www.filesavr.com/battleships_2
EDIT: updated link, including the latest prototype.

This is so awesome, I love the fact that you show me where the sonar points are instead of the ships and that I can't click on them until the screen is loaded.
On that point however, it isn't immediately clear that I can't click on the map until it's loaded; maybe give the mouse a wait icon until the map is finished loading?
I also have 2 more suggestions for you. If after 30 seconds the player hasn't hit a ship or sonar (i.e. misses or not clicking) randomly flash either a single sonar block if one is still available or a ship piece, as this will at least encourage the player to keep trying.
My other suggestion is to flash the hub or some similar cue when the player goes through a quarter, half quarters and 10 remaining bullets. There's a sense of feeling cheated when the message pops up that you ran out of bullets and I think some kind of visual or audible cue will keep the player mindful of the bullets they're wasting.
Finally, what about adding a power-up that lets the player search a 9-block grid in one shot? Like maybe there's just 1 power up that gives the player 5 right-clicks which searches a 9-block area?

Yes, I did that pacifically
You did that of, in, or near the Pacific Ocean?

Funny one. Fengol, I added a missile launcher thingy, did you see that? Press f2 to flash all the points, then find the golden one. That is the power up for the missile. Take a look at it, it's alot of fun.
As for the 30 second encouragement thing, I have to disagree with you. It's random and no one will know what they did to activate it as well, if you haven't shot a ship in 30 seconds, you're terrible :P
I quite like you're mouse loading idea and the hud flashing tips. I'll sub in audio at the end.

forgive my ignorance but how do you use the missile?

I suppose it is a little complicated, find a gold stared block, similiar to the green one. Press f2 ( a cheat) to help you find it.
From there, the missile prompt will say that is has ammo.
From there, click on the missile X1 ammo to activate the missile.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
