Yep, dislekcia and I have drawn blanks while trying to think of a catchy name for our cellphone game.

The Dev name is MathsterMind because the gameplay is basically mastermind with maths equations.

The art has a underwater/aqua theme so an aqua name might not be a bad idea.

While MathsterMind isn't bad we sure could use some suggetions, so fire away!

Maths Master?
Aquation, erm, Master?
Cartesian Calamari?

I suppose it'd depend largely on your target audience. If it's the younger crowd, you'd need to play more on the theme, to rope 'em in. If it's an older audience, you'd need to focus on the mathematical element.

Target audience for the project this is part of are grade 10 girls in Mpumalanga. Obviously we'd like something that's appealing to a wider market, but the game is designed around providing a fun, maths-based puzzle game for people who want to get better at basic maths and internalise concepts.

Seconded. Or thirded. Something.

Of course, we're looking at rather Western names. What about a more Afro-centric paradigm as a possibility?

I think Aquation sounds softer (more girly) then Mathlantis. My perception is things like Atlantis etc are more boy focussed than girl focused so I dont think Mathlantis is a good name.

Try get some sort of more girl theme in, (fairies, mermaids, singing etc) if you want to target mostly girls.

I like both Aquation and Mathlantis.

Cyber, perhaps you want to post some of the art to give them an idea?

Personally, I didn't see anything wrong with Mathstermind.

Mathstermind reminds me too much of a lisping igor.

Aquation, on the other hand, is pure win.

Remember, aiming at young girls who may not have english as their first language, so merging words might not work too well.

What about names along the line of:
Bubble Logic
Aqua Puzzle
Aquatic Mathematics: The Mind Treasures
Starfish Maths
Master Mind: Coral Maths
etc

(sorry, I tend to get sarcastic with names, nothing ever seems to pop into my head)

How about Bubble Plus, Mermaid Divison, Fishy Fractions?

Alrighty. =]

Concept work for the game:

There's still alot that needs to be done. These are just the roughs. The final product will look much prettier of cause. ;-)

We are going for something very similar to the style of Aquaria; beautiful, serene, non-threatening. The final elements will look much more friendlier and fun (Mr Helmet head was just used for testing purposes) so keep that in mind when coming up with names. ;)

Personally, I like Mathstermind. I originally thought the name was too long. But it has grown on me. I really like the name Aquation also. It's short and sweet. Simplicity usually works best. Especially when it comes to naming things.

I like the creativity... And for some reason I really want to make a mathematically themed roguelike called Divide By Hero now. Dunno why ;)

Is it absolutely essential to reflect that this is a maths game in the title? It comes off a little bland if you make it so to the point (case study: "Alien Shooter 2" -_- ). Is there some form of backstory that we could try to pull a name from or a thematic goal the player is aiming for?

The client wants the game to be strongly maths themed, it's aimed entirely at people who want to practice and hone their maths skills, so a name that points that out would be good. I know it sounds bland, but that's pretty much the game right there: It's a maths puzzle, there's no time or budget to give it a big backstory ;)

Point made. ;)

In that case, I offer "Aquatica: Nautical Numerals". Prefix for easy reference and theme conveyance without teh_laem, suffix to keep the maths relationship prominent. A quick Google search reveals several "Aquatica"s, but nothing game-related at first glance.

You, sir, are clearly made entirely of hax. That is an awesome name.

Woah, that name is awesome! I would play a game with that name straight away, but it doesn't really fit a female target audience so I would vote for "Aquatica: Nautical Numerals"
