I was playing around with an idea this week:

I'm just going t ojump straight in, you have foru characters. A robot, a mercenary, a medic and an engineer. Each of them are crucial to the completion of a level. and each of them complementing the team in their own way as follows:

Mercenary - kills the enemy
medic - heals the mercenary
robot - disposes dead enemies and can hack into alarms/electric doors
engineer - repairs robot

So far I only have the Mercenary and the robot working, the merc can kill the enemies and the robot is able to dispose of the corpses. Sound will also play a big role as the enemy might be able to hear sounds you make. It's all in the prototype

The reason I call it the great escape is because they'll have to escape some sort of a lab or facility. I'm still working on that.

as a final note, here's a full explanation of what's going on on the screen, you can also press F1 in-game to see this:

The Great Escape v0.0.1

Explanation of what's going on on the screen:

The animating sprites are the enemies, the un-animated sprites are the playable characters.

The mercenary: Right-click to select the mercenary, then right-click on a LIVING enemy to shoot. Left-click to move around

The Robot: Right-click to select the robot, then right-click on a DEAD enemy to eat the corpse, Left click to move around.

The wall: The skull-ish icons, it has no function other than to block stuff.

The alarm: This is the gray square with the red circle, left click to sound the alarm. If the enemy "hears" the alarm the will run towards it

The enemy: The enemy is out to kill you(obviously), right now the enemy has no function other than getting killed and responding to the alarm.

THINGS DONE

Robot Movement
Mercenary shooting + sound effect/animation

Cool, you should check out games like Commandos or Lost Vikings for inspiration on getting your team to work together in neat and interesting ways. Any game involving a team like that has a tendency towards puzzle-solving situations rather than pure action: in this regard, level design is going to be your major ally and you should pay careful attention to the placement of each individual enemy or actor.

Just a few random thoughts to fire about.

Thanx edg3, I'm currently downloading the Commandos Demo to do some 'research'. Can't remember when last I played that game. :)
