Hi there, my MMO is now ready for testing. All I need now is a Host for my MMO, but since this is my first all-around game, i don't want to pay to host it.
So does anyone know any good MMO-hosting sites? preferably free. Thanx
Link to the source of my mmo: www.conlan.zzl.org/downloads/mmo.rar ~15MB

For free hosting you're better off checking US sites but I imagine you're gonna need specific ports opened for your MMO beyond 80 and 21 and they might charge you for that. What other services (e.g. DB) do you need?
Are you going to share your source, I can setup an internal host at the next devLAN for devs to play and test on.

Problem is, it's still kinda in "alpha" stage, with some areas open and a very small fighting arena. So basically it's just walk around and chat. Thing is I want to test it first to see if it's going to be worth continuing working on.
Fuzzy, tbh I don't even have a name for it yet. It's basically a 2D MMO, where you can be one of 4 classes which represent the elements. Each element will have its own unique abilities and accessible regions allowing them to take short-cuts and access class-limited areas. For example the class that represents the element of water, will be able to walk across lakes and water etc. and the class representing air will get to fly over mountains water etc.
That's about all I have for now, like I said in a previous thread, I want the MMO to evolve around what the players want, so I guess it's a good idea to start serving in alpha stage :)
As it is still in Alpha stage, there aren't any shops and there are limited items. So basically it's just a glorified chat room until I know it's going to be worth working on :)
*edit*
I'm waiting for confirmation from a site, but I doubt I'll be able to serve there. I'll update the first post with any developments

You'll need to download the server and the client, which might be >30MB. If I can't get the server up on that site I'm waiting for, I'll gladly let you download it and test it. It's done in a MMO maker so naturally you'll be able to play it over LAN :)
Just remember that this is a very early version so there won't be much to do, most of the buildings are still closed, and the maps aren't that detailed yet.
*edit*
In fact, if I can get it on a server, I can make you a designer.programmer etc. if you really want to help, and I need all the help I can get ;)

I tried another one where you can buy/sell properties as well, but I forgot to backup when I reformatted my PC

So test it with the Game.Dev community! :)
The developers in the Johannesburg/Pretoria region will be getting together at the beginning of April for a devLAN, why don't you bring the MMO for us to check and offer feedback on. It'll be much cheaper and easier than setting up online hosting.

UPDATE:
I believe that most of the characters in my MMO should be unique. Alot of MMO's characters look all alike, I however will try to make every character unique, and the best part is that you can design your own character by going here (http://charas-project.net/charas2/index.php). PM the image to me and I'll chagne your sprite.
This will be a feature added if I can actually get this thing on a server.
Fengol, I can't bring it straight to you. I'll have to upload it somewhere for you to download, I think it'll be a waste to test at the DevLAN though, because it's still in early development but if you really want to I'll put it up somewhere. :)

Well bring your PC that acts as a server and let us all connect on a LAN. The idea of a DevLAN isn;t to play games as much as to see what people are working on AND TO GIVE THEM FEEDBACK which is exactl what you are asking for.

There are several hosting sites out there that allow you to run your own code on the server. That's what you want: A static IP address that you can run your game on that people can always connect to. You're going to have to tell them which ports you want opened and how much traffic you expect to do in a month...
There might be free places that support MMO Maker, so look for those. Otherwise you're going to have to find a friend at an ISP that can host for you, or you're probably going to be paying anything from R600 a month for a server. Once you get popular and have tons of traffic, you're looking at really large server bills... But don't worry about that for now.

That's why I'm looking for a free server, I don't have R600 for a server

I love the disclaimer on Eclipse - "Remember, Eclipse is a easy to use. But to create a truly fabulous games with this mmorpg maker time and effort will have to be put forward into your masterpiece."
Regardless of the engine/framework/platform this statement rings true.
Otherwise, this looks pretty interesting. I'd love to play with it.

The MMO is at home(I hope), I'll bring it to work tomorrow, take a few screenshots and post them here

****, never saw that! :D Will check it out tomorrow
In the meantime you can look at this:

It's not the one I want to host, but it's what I kinda have on the MMO I want to upload.
I actually quickly created a room, and it just "evolved" into a new MMO. :D
What do you think?

share, share, share!
What makes this community a cut above the rest is that we all share our work in progress for others to review, comment on and learn from. We have some talented members here who've made many games before and some even make games for a living (yes, in South Africa) so you can only benefit from what they can tell you and the rest and give you encouragement on what you're doing or even learn from your creativity.
We've setup a free-for-game-development file share on http://gamedev.openhazel.co.za/filecloset/index.php where you can post your games and I suggest letting people download the engine themselves and suggest posting your custom files.

I'll upload it on my website for download later, getting a server is a drag so i doubt I'll continue working on this. I'll put up the whole thing, so you can check it out.
Do I need to write some sort of code to get this thing to work from a web server? I registered at the free Eclipse web hosting thing but I don't know what to do next.

You'll have to read the help and tutorials on the website there, I've never used Eclipse and I only started going through the tutorials this morning

Using the eclipse program is a breeze once you get to know it, it's VERY easy. Email me at dietlof@cononiah.com if you have any trouble with the app or the download. ;)
I'll add the link to the first post as well.

Eclipse MMO Maker is very well thought out and easy to use. I especially love the in-game editors you can grant players to help you build the world.
@ Bonezmann: I would love to see you develop your game. Create an over-arching story, a couple of map areas and quest or 2. I didn't see where you add monsters and stuff to fight but it must be in there somewhere too.
Thanks for bringing this tool to my attention and I watch your progress with anticipation.

Hi Bonezmann
Do to my weak lurking abilities I always stumble on the juice threads to late. I can maybe offer you hosting for free, if your still interested.
The down side will be that it will be hosted in the states using a linux virtual server at www.linode.com. So we will need to get the Eclipse Server running on WINE(I quickly browsed through the forums and it seems like the Eclipse Server can run on WINE).
So if your interested leave a message on your thread or private message me and I will get back to you.
Regards,
Bonezmann

While playing(you must have admin rights) type /editnpcs then just add a hostile NPC. To put it into your map, enter the mapeditor go to properties and click on the NPC tab to add/remove NPCs :)
Let me know if you have more Q's ;)
