View Full Version : Just a question on the games on game.dev

if you submit a game to game.dev comp, who owns the game? do you forfeit the rights to the game to NAG. I made a kickass game that I am currently making tons of money from, and I want to submit it to Nag and still make that money, is this allowed?
Thanks so much

I get a feeling you're KFC or one of his friends attempting to "spam" the forums, but I'll answer your dumb question anyway.
You don't forfeit anything just by posting your game here in game.dev so other people can see your obvious genius, even though I doubt you have a game at all, or are making any money from it.
NAG Magazine has nothing to do with Game.Dev, other than to provide a forum for aspiring game developers to discuss, post their work and participate in the user-run Game.Dev competitions.

No man, I just don't understand the Game.Dev rules. Hell I always like to know before I accidentaly give the rights of my game to somebody else.

Look boet, i'm not asking for you to believe. i was just wondering that should i put that game on these game.dev forums, it not be stolen and that i retain my rights.
Sorry if it made you offensive in any way,

If you really did have a game you'd have posted a link here after Miktar's first post that said you're lying. How old are you, just by the way?

weird. I'd love to see the game, even purchase it if it is a South African game. But why would anyone assume NAG gets rights to sell games entered. This is clearly not what this community is about.
If there is a game I'm sure everyone here would love to support it, not screw you over. If there isn't don't waste our time.

Odd. There used to be a clause in the competition rules that said any IP submitted remained the property of its respective creators. I must have deleted it during an edit, my bad.
Yes you can submit a game you've made that's been commercialised in a competition. I usually don't, mainly because the commercial stuff we make doesn't fit into the competition's challenge.
It seems odd that you're making income off a game and are still at the "I can't show people because they'll steal my stuff" stage of dev nubbishness ;) Plus it would be assumed that if you were making money online you'd understand IP law well enough to be able to answer your own question. How have you monetised your game, if I may ask? I'd love to know about more success stories in SA.

Look mate, it's like I said, it is completely irreverant weather I acutally have game, i am just asking a question. I dont need you to believe, i dont seek your approval. I was just curious about what would come of my game if i posted it here, which i doubt i even will because i won't give a game for free that i am currently making tons of money from.

Well i haven't really started selling in Sa, but i did it before abroad. basically I just burn the games onto a CD, and then I go to the local market with my laptop. I showcase my gmae and ask if anyone wants to buy it. i dont think this approach will work over here though, with all the crime and ****, so im starting an online website to sell it.

Okay i think i speak for everyone here when i say we want to see this game that is making you so rich. I'm sure everyone would love to play it and give you some feedback (Selling to people on the street that your never going to see again cant be good for feedback). What language did you write it in by the way?
So, post a thread here, put a download link up. Sounds like you've just moved here as well, and i'm sure some forumites can share tips on getting your game on the SA scene

Hmm...a mighty suggestion, although as I've stated before i RATher not give my game for free. I might consider putting up a demo, I'll start on one today.
If you want to actually play the full game however, I'm gonna have to see some real moolah. I don't know how much to price it in South Africa, perhaps in the range of 200-300 rand.

A game that took 20 minutes and worth R200, it must be mighty speshil. In the meantime, post a thread, describe the game, objectives, controls, screenshots and other relevant stuff.
On a side note, what country are you from and what did you sell the game for there? Doing a direct currency conversion doesn't always work

I know, South African's are quite rich so I actually increased the prices threefold. Hey...at least I'll be getting more profit.
Also 20 minutes was an exaggeration, I probably spent 20 hours over all.

Okay, let's try this approach then, because I'm genuinely keen to see this game: As you may well know, NAG magazine reviews games. We'd love to review your game because: 1) it's clearly a huge success, and success stories always make for good press. 2) We like indie games, and this would work especially well on the website. 3) It'll give us a chance to show everyone here the truth, which they clearly desperately seek.
I'm not kidding, BTW. PM me your details and we'll review this game. Any developer would leap at the opportunity to have a published magazine professionally critique their product, especially if they're trying to launch said product in a new country.

Yeah but so far NAG seems to be quite a small unknown publication. I love it and it's a fun read, but it doesn't have a large enough audience. However if you are willing to purchase the game and then review it I will be glad to sell it to you.
Thanks for your genuine help

Hah, okay then. Clearly, if R200 isn't in your marketing budget, you're missing the point of running a profitable business.

It is though. I have given my game free to PC gaming publications as well as some websites, cause they generate free press for me.

NAG is SA's leading technology and gaming magazine. Your game will get a lot of FREE exposure. Don't you think it's worth the loss of R200? I urge you to reconsider. What's it called btw. And what's it about?

And yet you're unwilling to mention the name of this game, even though it's apparently "on some websites" generating you free press?
Do you REALLY think you're fooling ANYONE here?

The outrageous compulsive lying, poor spelling and incorrect word usage would indicate that it is KFC. His previous persona was given away too quickly because he went in for the personal attacks too quickly. He's obviously trying a slightly different tact here but it's clearly not working. It's definitely him.

If Nubby McNubsauce over there thinks he's made a game, that's great for him. The question about IP is at least worth answering, even though it's completely misguided.
