"There have been few indie gaming success stories as big as Dwarf Fortress, an ASCII freeware simulation game in which the player helps to establish and govern a colony of dwarves, as they construct a Moria of their own."

Dwarf Fortress has happily kept me distracted while I've been consigned to hospital (Thank you Miktar for the link ages back) and I've just been given a Gamasutra interview with the developers.

Talking about the maths behind that game made my stomach do a double-skip. Makes me think my degree wasn't a waste after all. :P

I'll definitely give DF a go during my next holidays. :)

Also, while I was there, I saw the blog on the one guy's visit to SA. Enjoyed that too. ^_^

off-topic: If you're gonna play I highly recommend reading The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress (http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/) and using his tutorial install which includes some nifty addon tools.

I started playing it recently, (luckily had that tutorial at hand) definately a good recomendation. (The game and the tutorial)

I've got to say though, DF is what games should be like, the gameplay (and maybe even the complexity it offers) should always be taken over the graphics based games you get nowadays.
