This post is just to inform everyone that there is a LinekdIn group you can join if you are a South African game developer or someone interested in getting involved in the gamedev field, be it as coder, artist, musician, sound guy, designer, whatever.
Every so often people ask me if I know about any coders or artists looking for a job and it would be easier if I can just point them to the group and they can take it from there.
Anyway, the group link for South African Game Developers (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1837730).
for those that do not know what LinkedIn is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LinkedIn), o.O
LinkedIn (pronounced /ˌlɪŋkt.ˈɪn/) is a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003,[3] it is mainly used for professional networking. As of 1 January 2011, LinkedIn reports more than 90 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.[4] The site is available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.[5] Quantcast reports Linkedin has 21.4 million monthly unique U.S. visitors and 47.6 million globally.

LinkedIn is such an ******* of a site. Sorry but trying to get yourself off that site is a mission and a half. I'd personally recommend steering clear.

What exactly is wrong with LinkedIn and is there another service for networking that you would recommend?

My experience with LinkedIn was that it constantly sent mail to people on your contact list. To stop it doing this, you have to manually tell it to stop sending messages to _each_ person. Perhaps they've fixed this by now. There were rumours of the site gaining access to you email accounts to set up these contact lists. Also, just try and delete yourself from linkedIn. I had to google the various steps to go about this. Perhaps this has all been fixed, I don't know, but I wouldn't use the site again after it spammed all my contacts.
Facebook works :P

I keep getting spammy contact requests at LinkedIn. Seems like the place is populated mostly by marketeers trolling for contacts.
I mean I'm on LinkedIn, but I don't use it, the kinds of social links it allows don't seem to be useful (because I make friends with all of my business contacts anyway, and if I had a bunch that I didn't like then I would still instant message them to stay in contact).

Funny, I've had similar experiences with both LinkedIn and Facebook. That, and the permissions around apps on Facebook are scary. I'd say the only advantage Facebook has is that it's more likely the person you're looking for is there.

The best reason to have a Facebook account is to use Facebook Connect as an internet driver's license which means you don't need to create a new login for every site you visit.

I'd rather use OpenID (http://openid.net/) than bind such an account to FB, but then again, it depends on the sites you visit and if they support OpenID.
[edit] oh.. FuzzYspo0N mentioned it :P
[edit2] lol, check the bottom of that OpenID page, seems FB uses it. Can't remember if I noticed an OpenID option when I reged for FB, but it was also waaaay back.
