Some time ago someone mentioned a member of the Game.Dev group tried making a Nag MMO(See "Nag Arcade game" thread). Before I start I'd like to mention that finding a server this time around might not be that impossible as last time, although the server will only run on certain days/dates at first. The reason for this is to test if the server/bandwidth can handle this.

Basically it's going to be a merge of the NAG forum and the Mibbit Irc Channel. Making it a live chat and interaction room. There will be various rooms ofcourse, it depends on what we can come up with. Regulars can even have their own houses, their own sprites and we can also have a mini battle stadium, should this project work well

I'm going to try and get a server running within next week, so we can start testing this thing. So that's basically my part of this project, to get the thing up and running. From the art/design side I'll need a mapper(someone to make the maps) and a scripter in case we need a few scripts. I'm using the new Eclipse Evolution2.7

Anyone up for it?

As always, all Questions, comments and suggestions are welcome.

[UPDATE]

The hosting should be up tomorrow, I forgot the server program at home. :(

So far I'm planning to host it between 12:00 and 13:00, and after that(depending on badwidth usage) I'll host it for the rest of the day. :)

I hope to see you there. :)

Bonezmann: Cool idea, but perhaps draw up proper specs, believe me they make things heavenly and allow people to actually see what you are planning. And for the coders etc what language the project will be using including the package if applicable.

But I'm looking forward to it and I would love helping coding side.

Also the times is a bit sucky for us at school...

EDIT: just thought of a cool gameplay element: nagland == pokemon would rock no?

EDIT EDIT: how should we get there? and where is there exactly?

I'll upload the client tomorrow, I just hope I can host, I'll host it 12:00 - 13:00 and from 17:00 - 18:00. How does that sound?

Do you perhaps know of any local companies that would host a server like this? It doesn't need to be free, just not very expensive. :)

Posting screenies to show the people what's going on isn't really helping yet, as for the graphics, it's really just normal RPG/Final Fantasy graphics, nothing fancy. Basically the whole world consists of two rooms (so far): A snowy field, and a bunker of sorts making it a simple chatroom for now. As soon as I get the server running successfully, we'll go for the Pokemon thing. :)

What language are you working in ?

I don't know what language Eclipse is using, here's the link to their website:

Eclipse (http://www.freemmorpgmaker.com/)

Apparently there is a source code there, but it does support scripts as well.

I don't really know a lot about servers so I'll leave that to someone else with more knowledge, but there are a number of ways you can make money without really impeding other peoples fun. Adverts for instance(eg "This battle was sponsored by", or by selling money for people who have to much in real life, just if you wanna do that you should balance money better than in the real games: "Oh I have a ****load of money lets go burn that in that fire"

The pokemon thing will be fun I've been looking forward to making a clone for ages and anyways it'll give a nice opportunity to come up with new ideas.

Ok I'll check it out, but I suggest you start working on design docs if you really want people to take your plan seriously.

You can't expect people to lob out help when you go: "I don't really know what the **** I want to do but it will be uber great. Help plz"

Sorry if I sound very harsh but that is unfortunately the reality you will need to put in work if you want this thing to work.

I'm uploading the client as I write this, I'll post a link when it's uploaded. To run the client please follow the following instructions:

- Extract the files to a destination folder

- run the included .exe file to install the library files

- enter the "client" folder and run the "client.exe" application

- in the menu you'll see a IP config button, click on it.

- In the IP address field enter the following ip address: 198.54.202.110

- Click OK and check if the server is online

If the server is not online do the following

Go back to your IP config menu, in the Port field enter: 23348

Click okay.

If any of the above don't work I'll have to forward the port or something which will take some time to figure out, let's hope it works

btw, the upload is finished, download here:

nagland.rar (http://www.cononiah.com/nagland.rar) ~17mb

edit:

Server is up now until 18:00, may be up tomorrow between 9:30 and 13:00 and monday from 9:00 until 18:00

edit2:

Please post any problems other than the above here

edit3:

if the above port number doesn't work you can try this one: 58199

You need to install the libraries first, included in the rar file but outside of the client folder you'll find: ELI2RC3HF4.exe

Also remember to give a more detailed description of your error.

I installed the liabries and it says stuff like "options.ini could not be read, creating a new one" and then crashes

That's odd, it works fine here. Maybe there's a fault with the client. I'll upload another one and post the link soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

edit: try restarting your pc, if you haven't already :)

There is a small chance I can get a server right here in SA for free, or at least for very cheap, so let's all hope the person says it's okay. I should know within the next two weeks.

If you can connect via the current version I'd like you to know that this is only a test server, although you can still walk around and chat, the real test nagland will be up on Monday from 9am until 6pm.

More info

Since it's now winter, Nagland will start off in the winter season as you'll find yourself in a snow covered field, however, below the field is a bunker of sorts where all Nagsters can sit nice and warm and have a chat. If you do like the cold wheather you'll be free to chat ouside of the bunker as well near the frozen fireplace.

Not far from the fireplace is a beautiful ruined gate that allows Admins and mods to enter the specially designed multi-elemented room where all the elements come together: Water, fire, earth and Darkness.

Sprites and classes

When Registering you can choose from a variety of classes, each with it's own unique Sprite. Although like the tags on the forums, the authorites can change these sprites due to happenings on either the NAG forums, the IRC channel or the MMO itself.

Authorites and developers

Just like on the Forums there will be Mods and a Administrator, and just like on the forums they will have the power to ban, kick or Jail you. When a Admin or Mod Jails a person that person's sprite is sent to a "Jail Room" where he cannot escape except with permission to go free from a mod or admin.

Kicking a player is like a warning, when a Player disobeys the rules, the player is kicked out of the client, but can rejoin again.

Banning a player permanently disables them to connect to the server. This will be a last resort from a mod/admin should the player disobey the rules too much.

I'll post more info later, when I'm at home. I hope that, at least for now, it this should keep you interested. :)
