This was news to me (although it's been around a couple weeks now, maybe I'm experiencing lag): http://blogs.unity3d.com/2009/12/16/kongregate-com-now-supports-unity-content/
What I think is really cool about this is not necessarily that it allows Unity developers another avenue of revenue, but that it means that Unity games may be able to go viral as easily as Flash games can (in the foreseeable future that is). Assuming of course that more portals will follow Kongregate.
There are many success stories of popular free online Flash games becoming best selling mobile games, maybe soon there will be similar stories about Unity games.

Yeah, is pretty sweet and this competition should help get a few games up there.
Btw, I could not find the info (or I'm reading with tunnel vision on again) but can only free games be entered? Does Kongregate allow for commercial games ....
urgh,, nvm, found infos :P You can earn share of advertisement revenue.

Pretty cool for a game that would be released free, or which might be doing poorly as a commercial product.

Technically I've earned moneys through Kongregate before, though it was only about $25 (after 35000 plays), so it works, but you need a properly addictive game at several portals, and probably several cross-pollinating addictive games, to make a profit.
The sad thing about Kongregate is that the highest rated games almost certainly get the vast majority of the plays, and the ratings never get cleared, so there is incredible inertia for the top earners to stay top earners.

With flash games it's more profitable to make allot of small games, than one large one. :)

Where are your games with these statistics Evolution? Sorry but random posts with no actual links are bad for the mojo of the rest of the developers :)
Good news otherwise, for the indie's out there!

I did freelance work for a company that specializes in flash games. The game I worked on is nine 2 five, a multiplayer Facebook game. The game is currently in closed beta, so you can expect to see allot of it in the future.

to make allot of small games
Sorry, then which one is that? The lots of small ones, or the bigger one?
OT,
The competition is feb 15, thats pretty short if people haven't been working on something.

You can't invest allot in a flash game because the money you make off them are not that much and you can't afford to take the risk of developing a large game that is not a success. The market is very cluttered so there is a large chance your game gets missed, so it's better to make allot of smaller games and bring in profit from multiple sources. It also depends on the type of game you doing, with our game we have game gold which allows the player to purchase in game money using real money. Our game is the average game size you would expect for a flash game on Facebook. If you developing for Kongregate you better off developing addictive small games.

I think what you are trying to say is that it is better to just create a bunch of smaller games for these portals than one big one which might be missed or not be addictive. The same would apply to a Unity3D game on these kind of sites, and not just Flash.
@FuzzYspo0N, the compo has been announced last year sometime, blackships just found it a bit late :)

@xyber - true, this is even applicable for iPhone games
I was speaking from experience and what I see happening in companies, but here is a link I found for FuzzYspo0N to prove my case.

Doh! I figured I had been snoozing... I only found out because the one fan of the original Black Ships Fill the Sky told me, so that I would eventually release BSFTS on Kongregate (which may now be a possibility).
Most of the Unity games that have been released for that competition don't look like they took more than 2 weeks to make... There are 5 weeks until the deadline... so I reckon it's doable... If one were to spend more than 5 weeks working on a Kongregate game it's really improbable that that money will ever come back... and anyway I feel like making something quick after my 2010 experiences.

allot: Let have; give the right to; give the opportunity or permission to "Mandela was allotted few visitors in prison"
a lot: To a very great degree or extent "I feel a lot better"

Blackships, I wanted to tell Steve about this compo last year but then realised they only have free to play games on that site. Totally forgot that you would have a few games that would only need the addition of the Kongregate API to be applicable for the competition.

It is the interwebz, so many strange uses for words one just have to live with. Even I would sometimes just type "your" in place of "you're" and not notice if I didn't first read the post over again. The one that ticks me off most is the use of AN for every darn case where "A" or "AN" would be used.
