Original post:
Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and for some reason cant post a new thread. I didnt wanna hi-jack anyones thread so i looked for the closest to what i want to post and this one seems to be it. I have reasontly started playing with game maker and I am a Grafic Designer. I am not such a good coder so making my own tile sets work is still a small way off. I have created a ninja tile set for you guys to play with if you want but I am not sure where I can post the Zip file. can anyone posibly give me any hints?

Love the little ninja's!!! My brother is starting to learn GM and he's using this tile set! Maybe if you could give some of the people some animations?

Ok my comments on the tile set.
Firstly. Thanks for the Tileset. We need LOTS more graphics guys making tilesets like this for us :) I'm glad my discussion with you at rAge was able to get you onto the forums :) So a very big welcome to you :)
Secondly Comments:
1. The Brick Tile doesn;t tile with itself or with the wall tiles. The left side of the tile is lighter in color than the right, so putting them next to one another doesn't let the colors match. And the brick layer at the top and bottom are the same, so putting them together doesn't look right.
2. Use a standard color for the background of the sprites that should be transparent. Though not strictly neccessary it makes it easier to see (a common color to use in Magenta/Fuscia)
3. How about some transition tiles, ie half grass/ half beech/dirt
4. How about a door to put in the wall? So the hero can get in and out of the buildings?
5. The Wall.bmp doesn't fit with the rest of the tileset
6. What weapon is the hero supposed to use? There are stars for the ninja's but the hero needs a weapon too :)
I also notice that the characters are not the same size as the rest. Keeping the same size makes it easier.
Cheers
PS: here is a small GM game using the sprites :)

Ninjas spawn on the screen (initially every three seconds, but then a lot faster) - try and shoot the ninjas by clicking in a direction. The hero follows your mouse :)
Enjoy :)

thanks for the ideas. i havent done this in a while sorry. lol. too much paper pushing >.<
I am not sure what u mean by brick. lol. as i dont think i made a brick template. lol. please give me the file name and i will sort it out.
how do u change which colour is your transparancy because in my GM it doesnt let me change it. I have done everything from click it to Alt+F4 it. lol. nothing I try works.
I am buzzy with some transition tiles. I hope to have them ready by tomorrow if I have time tonight. Ill show u what I did with the wall by posting my own little test mini game 4 u. I created it for my self and just decided it might be useful to someone so I'll post it. =P
the hero is using his fists at the moment. lol. but what weapons would u guys like. and how should I put it in. is it part of the charracter or must I do them seperate. I can drop a katana, sai's, a chain or wat ever in there.
as for animations. I am also working on those. I will post them asap ;-)

The filename is "eastern building wooden floors.bmp" to me it looked like bricks :)
Have a look at my little game and check at how the buildings look - you'll see that the tiles dont quite fit next to each other. (For all the eastern building tiles).
In my game the hero has the stars :)

The transparency in GM is something like the second bottom most left pixel i think! If that makes any sense, go to the pixel in the left corner, and move on pixel right!

awesome, thanks. I have fixed the "bricks" lol. I will over ride the file as soon as I have fixed all the other stuff ;-)

Close, GM will use the pixel in the bottom left corner of a sprite as the transparency colour if you set the sprite to transparent.
There are other ways to get transparency though: In GM6 you can load black and white images as alpha maps and then set them using the script command sprite_set_alpha_from_sprite() or in GM7 you can simply load an image with an alpha channel like a tga file.

GM cannot be compiled for a cellphone.
As far as I know the only way to do it is with Java or Flash.

You cannot compile GM files for CellPhones
Does the game need to be in Java? I have a game written in Midlet Pascal that works on CellPhones.

actualy it realy doesnt matter what it is coded in. if it works on mobile its fine. obviousely the more phones it can work on the better though. do you guys know of any GM like game engines 4 cellphones. obviously flash could work but with no training in flash it is still pritty tough to build games in it. I Know Flash as a grafics generator but my action scripting sucks. lol.
P.S. go check out http://www.avonstorm.co.za/pictures/media.html we just started a online comedy series to serve as potential future funding for our games ;-)

first off tile set wise, what kind of programs do you have to your disposal? I use photoshop for myne as it is the most versitile. 32x32 pixels 72dpi seems to work for charrecters (lower you cant see any detail and it looks a bit silly) 16x16 is good for ground tiles. as Cairnswm has noted before, stick to the same proportions so that it's easier to use. I save mine in BMP as it seems to work well with GM but for any other program gif's or png's work just as well. to make it easier to work with I Index colour the images so that I dont get 1000 different colour schemes in the same pic and it also decreases you image file size dramaticaly.
thanks for the comment on the site ;-) hope you enjoyed the show as well. www.avonstorm.co.za/wappet is also a very nice site that was just updated last week =D

The guru of Tilesets is probably Reiner Prokien (http://reinerstileset.4players.de/) he releases everything in BMP format and says if you want another format then convert it yourself :)
He doesn't use a standard size for his tiles.
I like the idea of index colored character sets. Is it possible to create them to color inside the game instead of as different colored bitmaps.
Which tile sets to create? Why not concentrate on contests on the go out there. The 4E6 contest from Gamedev.net (http://www.gamedev.net/community/contest/4e6/) this year has as the elements Accountants, Ponies, Cryctals and Explosions. Make a tileset for these. Make a top down tileset, an isometric tileset and a side view tileset. A lot of people could then use these tiles in their contest entries. (And you'd be credited in all of them as a contributor :)
If you want to J2ME development check some of the early Dev.Mag (www.devmag.org.za) for the Mobile Game Dev series of articles by Flint!

yea i read those they cool , i am looking for what game to make cos im not really one for generic game types like mario etc, they cool, but i wanna make stuff outta the box :) so those kinda ideas. i been trolling the forums for ideas too, but if u had any that wud be cool.
as for the tilesets, i like the 4e idea, thats prolly where ill go first cos its lots of content to work with.
:)
im checking out that reiner guy for some sizing and basic principles, that shud be a good reference. thanks, ill make a thread soon about progress with some of the sets.
