View Full Version : Attention Dev.Mag writers: FREE copy of Aquaria

So, I was minding my own business this morning when an idea struck me: why not buy an indie game? It's been a while, after all. So, I whipped out some plastic and purchased the 2007 IGF Grand Prize winner.
Sitting happily in the Dev.Mag inbox now is a download link to the full version of Aquaria, and I've been trying to figure out what to do with it. After a while of staring and trying to keep the drool to a minimum, I've decided that I'm going to pawn it off to one of Dev.Mag's beloved writers in the exchange for some simple services.
The conditions are simple: if you do a bunch of work for the February edition of Dev.Mag, *you* receive this copy of the game. No tricks, no fuss, you become the proud owner of a full version of Aquaria. We'll transfer that special little link from our inbox to yours, and you get to keep it forever and ever.
To be eligible for this free copy, my current offer stands as follows:
An Aquaria review for Dev.Mag Issue 20 (900-1200 words)
Three other game reviews of my choice, also for Issue 20 (300 words each)
I'm looking for an experienced and reliable writer, and if anybody wants to make their own offers, feel free to do so.
I open the floor to discussion and will let everyone know once I've chosen a writer to do the job.

I'm willing to do some writing of reviews:)

I like Chippit's offer, but I'm wondering why this thread is so quiet.
Are people genuinely not foaming at the mouth for Aquaria, is everybody on holiday or is the proposed writing too much?
In any case, I need to get somebody started on the review soon ... so if I don't get any offers by, say, just after new year, Chippit will probably score an easy game in return for what he's promised.
If you did happen to be on holiday while this thread was up and actually were keen for Aquaria -- sorry about that, I know it's a bad time, but it needs attention now. Don't worry, I plan on giving away more review games in future, so just keep an eye out for offers.;)

I've used my super powers and coercive techniques to make this thread invisible to other Dev.Mag writers, that's all.

@ Nandrew
If you want, you can get me to write a review on another game and then decide if I'm any good to write for Dev Mag...

Chuluka, you're welcome to submit pieces of work for Dev.Mag if you're keen to write. We're receptive to new writers and will look at the stuff you send, even if we decide against publishing it.
However, with an offer like this, I simply cannot entrust the game to somebody who hasn't established themselves as a Dev.Mag writer. I'm afraid that I stipulated that the writer must be experienced and reliable, and considering that a $30 game is riding on this, I need to know that I'm making a good investment.
Sorry if the thread was ambiguous, but I did address it for the attention of Dev.Mag writers.
If you have something to send anyway, address it to (devmag@gmail.com) and we can go from there.
(--edit--)
Ah, right, page refresh. You guys seem to have the idea already.
So yeah, summary: you have to be published in Dev.Mag already to be eligible for this. It's quite a reasonable necessity.
If you want to get into Dev.Mag, we can talk. But not about this.

Heh, I would love a free copy of Aquaria, but of course am not a regular Dev.Mag writer, and have conflicts elsewhere.
I just wanted to indicate that this thread had been read by at least one other than had posted in it previously. ;P

Whatever you like, though we usually suggest that new writers experiment in the opinions section to get their feet wet.
Make sure to check out the style guide. You can find the link in Nandrew's signature.
Also, on that note, I think we should move that Google Docs. It'll make it simpler to edit and adjust if we need to.

Awesome to hear, be sure to get the details to me.
Thread topic at hand, though, it still seems that Chippit's the only core writer to make an offer. If I don't hear anything else before tomorrow, I'm going to have to just hand it over to him.
Apologies again if people were on holiday, but I need this content for the upcoming edition and have to start somebody on it now-now. Don't worry, there will be more offers like this in the future, so just keep an eye out in the months to come. ;)

"Arises from the dead", I'm back, I have been working really late shifts for the past month and a half. I have been out of action on the internet and socially but I can now say that I am back. I'm devoting some time this week purely to devmag and game.dev before varsity starts. I will write what I can with regards to reviews but I want to expand on the tutorials and start on some new projects. It feels good getting back into the swing of things here.

Nandrew, i sent you two reviews so far. im working on more now...
What im not sure of is "core writer" if i fit that :P
BUT, by "make an offer" you mean :
Darwinia review
H-Craft Championship review
Irrlicht3d engine review/introduction to irrlicht series
Other Indie games?
In my mail i also asked if writing about the process im going through to make Project SCR, as in what its taking in terms of tools , time, code exmaples and stuff to make a 3d game of this level? does that bare weight?
Im not sure what else to write about :D
Unless its a technical article, physics, 3d texture mapping, 2d texture creation, seamless texture creation, stuff like that?

You're eligible, Fuzzyspoon, even though the offer was a leetle bit last-minute and puts me in a bit of a tizz for deciding. :P
Umm. Hmm.
Yeah, you're making a good offer that's quite comparable to Chippit's, if what I read here is correct. Idunno, I may give it to Chippit based on seniority, though that seems a bit biased in light of what I'm offered here. Though I also need some more criteria to discriminate between your two offers.
I'll think on this and try make a decision asap. If anybody has any comments, offer them here.

Roit, so it seems I need to elevate my offer somewhat. I'll add a special supplementary Blender piece on top of what I mentioned above. It may even stretch over more than one issue depending on whether or not I decide to do liquid physics too.

oh lol, i didnt realise it was a race type competition, to be honest, chippit can take it :) i was just giving content based on what i said last year, i will be a hell of a lot more active on content... I was also curious bout the elligible part.
Chippit, im sure you will enjoy aquaria more then i would :)
Nandrew : The irrlicht tutorial series is actually taken out of a book im writing, it uses irrlicht and other free tools to create a full 3d game, with a menu, shaders, windows etc.
It starts out with some 3d "theory" but thats filled in over each "episode" and makes a good teaching platform for the example games. I said games, cos in the series you start with a 2d game using the 3d engine, and move onto a simple 3d game. later on im aiming at a 3d game with physics, sound, state management etc. Iv written a large part of the books concepts, flesshing it out will give a large series on making a 3d game using irrlicht...
And incase you didnt notice, im biased to irrlicht, its free, and its incredible for indi games.
I am trying to get hold of one of the developers from introversion for an interview :) Cos i managed to get in contact with the marketing lady, but thats probably gonna be too later for this issue. but look forward to it :D
Also, that guy who worked on the multiverse engine, the reason he was so scarce was he moved to cape town and i didnt realise, so ill still try get a hold of him. And not this time round, but im gonna make a technical series soon. something more "advanced" then what iv been laming around with :)
If nobody else is in the race for aquaria, chippit wins... Im out :D

Right, so due to Fuzzyspoon stepping out ... Chippit, Aquaria's yours. And yes, I'd like that new offer of the Blender tut as well. :P
Fuzzy, I'll keep you in mind if you want to run for any other games that I offer in future.
------------
Regarding a bit of business: yeah, I like the idea of Irrlicht. We're told on occasion that we don't have enough tutorials on specific tools, and yeah, Irrlicht is a reasonably well-known one. I'm interested.
Oh, also: Introversion interview. Ack, sorry, we've already had them in the mag. ;) Tr00jg spoke to them about Defcon a short while back. For this issue, I'd actually be interested in looking at one of the IGF 2008 finalists and their game (preferably one of the Game Maker entrants). Let it be known.
I'll check your e-mail and see exactly what it is you're proposing and give more detailed feedback there.

\o/
I was starting to get worried there. I've given myself enough work this month already. :P
Keep an eye out, though, Fuzzyspoon. This'll happen more often from now on, and your enthusiasm will earn you something eventually.
