Hey guys, saw this on the Net and thought I'd share it with the fine lot in Game.Dev:
Retro Remakes' 2008 competition was launched just yesterday, and with nearly USD $10,000 in prizes to be won the cream of the crop has to be that swanky gaming laptop worth $2,000 alone for the first place winner.
The competition runs from September 1st to December 6th 2008, with the results to be announced in January 2009. Contest rules and categories can be found at the official competition web site (http://www.retroremakes.com/wordpress/).

It looks awesome, best of luck to anyone brave enough to enter.
PS: if you win any prize, I promise you a news piece in the mag ;)

Interesting... Seems like a fun competition :)
Oddly enough, I find retro categories like these severely difficult to get inspiration for. I reckon I just don't remember enough individual games from "back then", it's just a collection of pixelated characters and bleeps in my memory. Of course, I remember christmas the same way when I was a kid, so maybe I just didn't have a very high resolution on the camera in my head back then.

However, we will say no to anyone who attempts to enter any of the following titles into this category. Seriously, they’ve been done to death and we’re asking folks not to enter any of the titles below (I mean, really, so don’t do what some people did last time and not actually read this bit where we said don’t)
* Arkanoid/Breakout
* Asteroids
* Jet-Set Willy
* Pac Man
* Pong ( In ANY dimension )
* Snake
* Sokoban
* Space invaders
* Tetris
* Time Pilot
Shucks, I am out then :P
If only I could remake Budokan...

lol i like how they excluded those games. Bionic commando should enter, its pure awesome.
Its a rad competition but i feel the whole retro scene is the trend :/ and with the hellspawn of INCREDIBLE remakes coming out, its like rehashing the theme again. Either way, damn cool comp "_

This looks cool. If I do enter, which I am sorta considering, I'd definitely do the 2nd category...
Now is your opportunity to let your imagination run riot and create/recreate one of the great lost games for category number 2 - Games That Weren’t.
It gives space for freedom, and by reading up on games that never made it you can have the basic idea and game play solved while you are still able to add personalized perks and stuff since these games are incomplete. There is a website dedicated to these games:
Games That Weren't Portal (http://gtwportal.retro-net.de/), it has reviews and everything you might need to find an incomplete game that appeals to you.
Sweet prizes! :D
I just thought of the ultimate entry to this competition....... >_< Whats even better is Stick Man Wars' game play suits it quite nicely! Now, If I can only find out what its called and decide if I will really go through with this...

can anyone say LEGEND OF KAGE? (IGN: 2.0)
The Legend of Kage (影の伝説; Kage no Densetsu) is a 1984 arcade game by Taito and was released for several contemporary home computer systems in 1986. The NES version was re-released on the Wii's Virtual Console in Japan on December 19, 2006, and in the United States on February 19, 2007. The arcade version also appears on the PS2 game, Taito Legends 2. A 3D remake of the arcade game is included in Taito Legends Power Up for PSP.
The object is for a ninja named Kage (pronounced "KAH-geh") to rescue Princess Kiri from mystical villains. Kage must fight his way through the forest, along the secret passageway, up the fortress wall and through the castle, rescuing her two times (three in the NES version) in order to win the game. Each time she is rescued, the seasons change. The player is armed with swords and star knives. Grabbing a crystal ball causes Kage's clothes to change to the next level in colour and thereby attain certain powers (red: normal, green: bigger shuriken, orange: bigger shuriken and faster speed). If Kage is hit while in green or orange clothes, he does not die but revert to his normal red clothes. Grabbing a scroll causes Kage to stand still and meditate for several seconds while approaching enemies drop to the ground dead (note that although the scrolls appear in the arcade version, the crystal balls do not). The enemies are:
* Red and blue Shinobis, or evil ninja, using swords and star knives. The red shinobis also use bombs.
* Yohbohs, or magic monks, including a red Yohboh who has cast a spell on the forest to keep Kage from escaping.
* Genboh, the fire-using villain, the leader in the summer stage and can split himself in two.
* Yuki (Yukinosuke Kiri), an evil ninja, the leader in the autumn stage who uses two swords simultaneously to deflect Kage's knives.
* Yoshi (Yohshirou Yukigusa), the evil samurai warlord and leader in the winter stage whose magic confuses Kage, leaving him vulnerable.

I thought that game was made of win, where is it seen as a games that werent?
Also, theres already tons of these made, and all successful? weird :D
Are you making your game "like" that one? then its not a remake? maybe im missing something :<
PLus : i didnt read well, it seems more then one category :D
Well, it was a "game that wasnt" in a sense that it did fail miserably in quite a few aspects that were mostly due to sloppiness (imho) and with the right application of direction (storyline) and such I reckon I could do a better job.

I think by "games that weren't", they mean games that never actually got made or otherwise properly released due to whatever reason, but were actively marketed.

I'd rather say enter for category 3: sequals that weren't If you are planning on adapting it a lot. I am actually thinking of making a improved version of digger (www.digger.org) but I am not sure if it will be good enough to actually enter it for the comp.

Indeed have faith in yourself, work hard and you'll be surprised at what you will be able to accomplish. ;)
Also don't be afraid to post your prototypes here, we'll be glad to give suggestions.
