First off, welcome to the forum! Hope to see more posts here :)
Second, it would be best to upgrade to XNA 3.0, if at all possible. Most tuts out there have migrated to 3.0 in the last year.
Third, start here - Riemer's XNA Tutorial 1 (http://www.riemers.net/eng/Tutorials/XNA/Csharp/series1.php). While this comes off a lot like engine coding, its most likely the route you need to follow to read that .x file and display it properly. I know I found it hugely informative.

The first link in the XNA tutorials section is apparently very good :) (That thread in general is pretty much an epic collection of awesome anyway)
Sounds like you don't have much handle on XNA yet, I recommend going through Riemer's tutorials step by step and seeing what you learn. You'll definitely be able to use your own models in XNA after that, as well as have a much better understanding of the racing game sample code when you look through it again.
Also, if you have any questions don hesitate to ask us here :)

In case it's not repeated enough, Riemer's tutorials are awesome and while you might not be playing with 3D models from the get go, you dive into it quickly and his explanations are good.
