View Full Version : Just a crazy experimental game idea (Need input)

Okay so yesterday I was bored at work and downloaded the Drago Pet (https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.aagames.dragopet&hl=en) dragon app for my Samsung Galaxy Ace(Android). So upon seeing the little egg lay there and hatch into a beautiful mostly unanimated baby dragon I got an idea in my head.
What if I could port my dragon pet into a playable game? Let me explain:
The game would basically have two "parts" to it, the pet dragon part wich you carry around on your phone during the day to feed, clean play with etc. and then the actual game part where you "port" your dragon from your phone to your pc into a playable and fully controllable dragon.
so my question is: would a MySQL database be a sufficient way of communicating between the two apps? It would be hosted on a website and would contain the following categories:
Dragon Name - self explanatory, your dragon's name (also used as a username)
Password - self explanatory
Dragon Type - whether it be a red or blue or green or purple dragon, this goes in here
Dragon age - the age of your dragon
Dragon stage - baby, adolescent etc.
Dragon health - the basic health state of your dragon that depends from hunger , happiness etc.
Port Type - indicates whether you are in "phone" mode or "pc" mode, used so you can't play on both the pc and the phone at the same time. Whenever you want to change you'll have to "port" your dragon via the menu or whatever system is used.
So that's basically it, I'm not going to go any further into it, it would become too complicated. :P
Thoughts? Could this work? Would you play it? Just throwing an idea out there. :P

Well, yes, that could work. But I'd hazard that the hard part would be building the game you're supposed to play with your creature, not designing some database tables to shunt data around ;)

True, but building both games would be a waste of time without above mentioned databases. ;)

Sounds similar to the Pokewalker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_accessories#Pok.C3.A9walker) aspect of the NDS Pokemon Soul-Silver/Heart-Gold games. I really enjoy my pokewalker, but I often wish I had something like that on my iPhone.
So, yes, this sounds like a good idea and I would buy/play it in a heartbeat.
(sorry, no dev input, just general support of the idea :p)

Really?
You mean that building either game on it's own would be a complete waste of time if they couldn't communicate with each other? So that would be the only fun thing in either game? That doesn't sound so wonderful... Remember you haven't explained what any of these games are going to actually play like at all.
I'd argue that a database on its own without any games that hook into it would be the useless thing. But hey, maybe that's just me. Point is, I reckon you're focusing on the super-easy bit for no apparent reason.

I think it would also be nice if you could inport/export a pet or something that you lvl, feed, clean, etc. into a existing game to help you out like your pet in torchlight. It would give a little more point to playing a game because when you think about it when you finish a game you carry nothing to the next one you play.

Oh don't get me wrong ofcourse the games are important, the point I was trying to make was that it would be pointless for me to make both games without any way to integrate them into each other since they would be super dependant.
@Deaththekid, the point of the mobile game would be to raise your pet and the part of the pc game would be to actually play or interact with the pet in some form or shape. Think Pokewalker. :P
edit: not to say I'm actually going to make the game, I just thought it would be good material for discussion :P

This Idea sounds like PlayStation synchronization where you play on the PS3 and the continue to play on the game with your PSP.
Maybe that is what you where going for. It is a good idea.

Why would you want to post this if you where not going to create it, for all you know it can provide you with additional money.

because frankly I lack the experience. Especially with unity, which is what I would use for the pc version should I make it. Maybe GM8 would be a nice substitute in the meantime... :P

And the reason you couldn't simply have both in the same game as separate modes of play is... ?

I'm least sure about the PC bit. Here's why: The audience is limited to people who play games both on their phone and on their PC (rather than just those who play on their phone)... It seems to me like that would work better on Android that on IOS.
A South African company called Tiger Wasp once made a raise a dragon and then play with it game (it was one app). It kind of did not work, though at the time some people liked it : Dragooo (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dragooo/id371490135?mt=8). I believe that every now and then Tiger Wasp considers making a sequel...
I've been starting to think about saving things to a database instead of the phone, simply because of the amount of hacking that goes on that can ruin competitive experiences... of course I've also been thinking about encryption which might be a smarter option for my purposes until I make something that is multiplayer.

Because the phone game would be about raising your pet, and the pc game would be aboutdoing quests or battles or whatever fancies the developer. Sure they can both be done on android phones, but limited feature-wise. . .
Blackship, I will check out that game. :)

Well, okay, but be warned my name is in the credits but I had very little to do with the design. There are things that work in the game, or could have worked, but I'd suggest viewing the game as a cautionary tale about how just having the skills and the money to make a game doesn't equal a good game (unless you've got the experience as well).
