Here's the latest timetable for events at the Game.Dev stand:

http://www.gamedotdev.co.za/images/rage2007/Revised_Rage2007Timetable.jpg

Some of the times might still change depending on individual speakers. Titles of talks aren't 100% final, I've gone with naming according to theme at the moment...

That looks like a nice lineup, and the speakers - not one, but two professional game devs! This is cause for happiness.

BTW, if I may ask, what exactly is the Code-off challenge?

Hey Dis, Im not gonna be able to make it to rAge, but would it be possible for you to maybe do an article on online payments in the devmag maybe?!?

The Code-off Challenge is a formal version of what happened last year when Cairnswm said that he could make Minesweeper in about an hour in Delphi. I quipped that I could do it in 15 minutes in GM... I ended up managing it in about 25 or so. It wasn't a planned event so a lot of people missed it. This year we'll do it in a more organised way ;)

I'd like to, but it depends on how busy I am. I'll put all the rAge talks up on the gamedotdev.co.za site, so you'll be able to go through the slides at least. I've been working on online payments from SA for the last 2 years or so, so there's a lot of info ;)

Nice! Looking forward to seeing that. Looking forward to seeing everything, actually.

Ahh schnitzel! Again, awesome talks. I'd like to second Cinimod.

I would love to see Game Polish (by ET), Metagaming (by Fengol) and all Sunday's talks... Gosh, it would be awesome to see all that in print. *hint*

Might still do it, one of the speakers on Saturday has since had to withdraw due to work pressures... We'll see, might add in the Idols idea if there's time.

The truth is that last year it didn't feel too slick. Although I do like that Gazza's working on his Idols idea at the moment ;)

Idols! Yay! The reason I joined Game.Dev! I'd be very happy to see this happen again! :D

I think the main problem last year was that the judges seemed to be looking for well-considered, fully-formed ideas, whereas the contestants were mainly pitching stuff that they'd either made up on the spot, or cool premises that they hadn't really given enough detailed thought about implementing (I was in the latter group). We can't expect anything else, really, since most won't even know about the event until they pitch up at the stand.

However, we could streamline things a little by constantly focusing the contestants with questions instead of letting them go off on their own, and by controlling the time that they have to speak. We could use something like a buzzer to cut off those whose time is up, or to stop those who begin to ramble in their tracks (remember the guy who went on for ten minutes about his Revolutionary Control System of Awesometude, without him actually knowing how it would work?). If we make the time limit seem like part of the game, people could really have fun with it, and if we let the audience do the voting (since there won't be any prizes this time, will there?) everyone can be involved in it.

Either that or the people on duty can do a dance item.

Yeah, I remember, the guys got so irritated with him taking his time that when I went up and tried to give a little introduction to where my idea came from someone yelled "get to the point!" (my intro wasn't even that long, it was like two sentences, because we were told to keep our presentations to the minimum)

Ok, so I'll start thinking about what my idea will be this year. (It'll be really stupid if I were to use last year's Idea)

Mind me but what exactly is this "Idols" concept thing. I wasn't aware of it last year as I was at rAge for a short time and I had no clue about the schedule. Anyone care to briefly explain?

Game.Dev Idols was a game development version of that insipid "Idols" reality show where people sing in front of judges for a chance to be a big star. Instead of singing (thank goodness :P) people pitched game ideas to win book prizes. Dis, Miktar and Coolhand listened to the ideas and then gave comments and criticism accordingly, then awarded the prizes. As Dis said, it ended up being a little less than slick, but overall it was a great idea.

Kolle and I are excited because Idols was where I first pitched the basic concept for Deathbringer and decided to get into this whole game development thing, and Kolle was the winner with his idea of a multiplayer coop point-and-click adventure game. The book he won was Win too. ;)

Cool. I kinda figured it was something along those lines but thanks for giving me the whole overview on the thing. I have so many ideas stored in a text file on my pc. I think I will choose 1 to just to participate and have a little fun.

Wow, that is made of win... Do tell him to explain it in more detail (please) somewhere here or something.

(if completely reckless shouting and gleeful waving of arms could be reliably translated into text, that is what this post would consist of.)

Pity that the talk got cancelled though. Work pressures suck. :(

So how awesome were the winning games from Idols?

Everyone kept talking about Cairnswm's game and how they want to play it... William, you know what to do!

D - Can you post the 5 questions that needed to be answered so that I can try put together a post that covers all the aspects we needed to cover in the presentation.

I'm definately interested in hearing what went on.

Speaking of talks, is there any feedback regarding the discussion on Sunday afternoon?

You should tell us:

Introduction about the game, including Genre, Theme and how it plays! (Background story?)
What in your game would make it special and make people want to play it?
How possible would it be to develop? (Time vs Resources)
What would make people play it more than once?
What aspect of your game would you concentrate on to make the game amazing?

All I can say is that the MRPG was a killer idea. I'm glad you're looking into it!
