Hi there okes,
I was just wondering if there are any pure development houses in SA (Joburg area)? Well, dev houses with a geek culture and not a corporate one, to be precise. And are they hiring? ;P

There isn't many developers in SA yet. One "large" one is Luma but doubt they have anything available. You could try though.

I don't think he means only game development houses...
@Etienne: There are literally hundreds of development houses in jhb, I can recommend a few such as Leaf Wireless based on what friends of mine who have worked there have said, but in general the job market for skilled developers is good. You should always go to the place you're interested in and walk around on your own though, that will give you a good idea of the culture of the place.

Thanks for the reply dislekcia. I'll just have to look around a bit more, I guess.

There are TONNES of jobs available for developers. Running the SA Developer .NET website I get regular calls asking if I know developers looking for work. If I can punt, check out the Jobs Forum on SA Developer .NET (http://sadeveloper.net/forums/30/ShowForum.aspx) and take your pick.

OFF TOPIC, SLIGHTLY.
'Cause Im new here, (I used to have a login etc, but Ive somehow misplaced it in cyberspace somewhere, got a new one, and ...) I can't post my own threads yet. Isn't that sad?
I'm surprised I was even allowed a custom avatar! However, being on a few other forums, I get why rules like this are put in place. ;-)
>>> So here I am hijacking Etienne's thread. :-)(
We're currently looking for a 3D Artist to join our game development team. This person should be able to model, texture and *ANIMATE*. I'm not sure how many *artists* use this forum (?), but for what its worth, I'm putting it out there. If there is any interest, I can elaborate...

Haha, classic! >.<
Im not a 3D artist, but out of interest, if you are willing to divulge it, how much would one be payed to do that?
That would depend on the persons level of skill, experience, and number of years in the industry. You basically are divided into (guess what) junior, middleweight and heavyweight.
Basic salaries fluctuate from company to company, but they all fit in between a general parameters that are "market related". Have I avoided the question sufficiently? 3D artisist will generally know what they should be paid.
There are often "salary surveys" etc published by the likes of gamasutra etc.
I studied one a couple of months ago. (US survey.) and the salaries fluctuated quite significantly from one area to the next. You get paid the most in NY as I remember, but your living costs are going to be higher. Take SA, generally you get paid more in JHB than in CPT.
But that could be changing.
