A favourite artist of mine, Orioto (http://orioto.deviantart.com/)on DeviantArt, has been doing some amazing pictures recently of video games (Ecco (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Big-Blue-116686280), Sonic (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Green-Hill-Zone-92284772), Mario (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Mario-World-101869609), Link (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Through-the-night-96477716))

I've been trying to paramaterized the style and know how you would make a game that has a "painted" feel. Braid has the same style, is it all just art assets is some of this coded?

P.S. I would love to play Link to the Past as Orioto has drawn it :P

That guy's artwork is briliant to say the least, but I doubt that was coded. If you have an artist with allot of time on their hands and one that has allot of talent, not to mention a good coder, you can design a game like that.

I know he didn't code it, I'm asking how possible is it for hobbyist developers to build a game with that style? What tricks would they have to know, is there a paper on it already?

Love the Mario World. That looks pretty cool.

Most 2D graphics programs have a plugin that can apply a fake brush stroke effect to an image. I'm sure that some of the simpler ones could be applyed as post effects to each frame of a 3D game.

It's definately possible, but you'd need to work with a talented artist (like the guy from Braid)... to make a full game that looks that good is months or years of illustration though :(

Some clever shader coding might help... but it'd also be possible with layers of good images

If you've got a good idea maybe make a little prototype and pitch it to Orioto... maybe he'll be interested in producing some art for your game ?

I'd suggest design some gameplay first and prototype enough to impress the artist, there's plenty of illustrators out there that would love to work on games.

After reading David Hellman's blog and listen to some GDC Radio items I've come to the conclusion that NOTHING beats Hand Drawn artwork; and it's the challange of the artist in combination with the developer to bring the style out.

I must say, that artwork is fantastic. If you should implement that into a game it's bound to win quite a couple of rewards!
