View Full Version : Cricket Game - *PROPER* demo :)

Hi everyone, a preliminary download is available. Please note that this isn't the quality to be expected of the full game, all the graphics are just place-holders for now. Also there's no sound or music (or title screen & options for that matter). The demo allows you to bat a full inning against South Africa, playing as Australia :P
Download:
http://rapidshare.com/files/61517345/Cricket.zip.html
Requirements:
WinXP (not tested on Vista)
.NET2 framework (you should have this installed)
Keyboard & Mouse :P
The controls:
Moving the batsman:
--------------------
J - move left
I - move up
K - move down
L - move down
Spacebar - run
* the batsman can only be moved during the bowler runup
* the batsman cannot be moved once a shot has been selected and powered
* press Spacebar while running to cancel the run and run back
Playing shots
-------------
Right-handed batsmen:
----------------------
A - cut
D - pull
Z - cover drive
X - straight drive
C - on drive
S - forward defensive
W - backward defensive
Left-handed batsmen:
---------------------
A - pull
D - cut
Z - on drive
X - straight drive
C - cover drive
S - forward defensive
W - backward defensive
* shots can be powered by holding in the key (hold in Z to charge a powerful cover drive)
* to play the shot, release the key (release Z to play the cover drive)
Selecting batsmen:
------------------
* when a wicket falls, a list of batsmen will be displayed
* select the next batsman to come in using the mouse
Scoresheets:
-------------
* to go past a score sheet or a pause in the game, press any key
* to access the scoresheets, press Escape
Quitting:
--------
* to quit, press Escape and select Quit from the menu options
KNOWN ISSUES:
----------------
* the CPU fielding isn't working 100% just yet, I'll be fixing that today
* batsmen can't be stumped
* once the last wicket falls, the game cannot continue (I'll fix that when the basic gameplay is finalised)
* the bat & ball physics aren't working 100% but mainly needs tweaking right now
* player attributes might be a little off :P
Please people, I'd really appreciate any feedback :) Even negative criticism...
Cheers
Kurt

Once you've got used to the speed, this game is awesome :D
Two things though:
1) I cant seem to bowl
2) Why cant I play as South Africa?
Otherwise, I didnt find anything that you say you already know?
P.S What did you make this in?
kurtkz
10-10-2007, 12:46 PM
Hey CiNiMoDZA,
thanks for the nice response :) the demo only lets you bat a single inning against the CPU. Team selection and a host of other options haven't been implemented yet, but these shouldn't take too long to finish. The big thing now, is to get CPU batting working. Once that's done, the next step will be to add more teams, stadiums and game modes.
Cheers
Kurt
PS. the game is written in an old version of my game engine in C# using the Tao framework

Okay. This game rocks! :D Very addictive.
There seems to be a problem with the batsmans running speed though. Sometimes they run too fast. Any ideas why? The game looks very blocky in full screen mode. Is it possible to scale the sprites without losing quality? Adding a umpire to the bowlers end with be cool also.
I'm really looking forward to the finished product. :)

Cool game man, my game was cut short by a bug followed by a "dont send" error. It happend just afta i changed bowlers then power bar etc. was toggling between full and emoty constantly and the direction thingy was stuck...
But cool game overall

Just another headsup people, there's another update that includes more minor bug fixes, unique team kits, a venue editor, multiple dynamic shadows, day/night transitions, floodlights and games played at different times of day. Hopefully the people over at planetcricket.net will update the teams and kits so we can have a more complete game.
Cheers!

Hi, just letting everyone know that I've implemented saving/loading. The download isn't available yet, but the save/load feature will let me introduce a scenario game mode. Anyone have any international match you would like to see in the game? The one that stands out right now is the 438 game, SA vs AUS. Any others?

* tweaked batting (easier to place shots now)

Really cool. I like some of the improvements that you've made. :) There's an error in one of the options screens though. The game froze when I was configuring the buttons. An to be honest, I prefered the old cartoon sprites. I still think you should make the sprites bigger and at a better resolution. They look horribly pixelated in full screen mode.
kurtkz
14-11-2007, 03:25 PM
Thanks for that Cyberninja :) I'll check out those bugs ASAP. Unfortunately I'm not an artist so I find it difficult to do the pixel art. I've been scouting around for people to take over that job (for free coz I'm cheap like that) but haven't found anyone willing to do it yet :(
kurtkz: try ultimategfx, they could help... (not sure if any of the people there would do it for free though...)

Cyberninja
14-11-2007, 03:51 PM
Theres also www.deviantart.com. The unofficial home of the artist. :) An like I said before, I think your old sprites were already WIN. :) They just need to be made bigger so they don't pixelate in full screen mode.
kurtkz
14-11-2007, 04:01 PM
Mmm, thanks for the kind words Cyberninja :) I'll see what I can do about the sprites once the game is done. For the time being I'm trying to update the CPU batting and simulation mode. Once that's done I'm going to try to add netplay and then championship modes...watch this space :P

PS. I'll be finishing up the tournament sometime this week and then I'll get started on lineup selection and then net play :)
kurtkz
21-11-2007, 04:32 PM
Here's a complete change log for v1.3:
* the harder you hit the ball or the better you time it the easier it is to hit lofted shots (dunno if this is intuitive or not but let me know what you think)
* added Ireland & Scotland (need flags)
* added lineup selection (can let computer do it for you if you're lazy :P)
* added pool selection (computer can automate that for you)
* save/load tournaments
The download for v1.3 can be found HERE (http://gamedev.openhazel.co.za/filecloset/data/files/275/cricket-v130-full.zip).

Really like the new graphics. The game looks a whole lot better now (even on full screen mode) I think your character sprites should be slighty bigger though. I would suggest you look at management games to get some ideas for your interface design. If you're still around next month, I could give you some pointers as far as the graphics go. The gameplay is pretty much the same as far as I can tell. Didn't run into any freezing problems either. So it's all good.

*** UPDATE COMING LATER TODAY! (Friday that is...) ***
Hi all,
I've recently had some free time, so I've just been cleaning up the game a bit. I'll be uploading a new version sometime soon, probably on Friday. Anyhoo, here's a list of changes so far:
REMOVED
* career mode (not planning on continuing this)
ADDED
* inside & leading edges (implicitly handles bottom and top edges too)
* collision with pad (can inside edge onto the pads now, ricochet off pads into the stumps, bounce off pads to be caught at short leg, etc.)
* Wagon Wheel scorecard
* Fitness attribute to each player (affects how fast they tire from bowling/batting)
* Rashness attribute to each player (batsmen get carried away when they start hitting out, increasing chance of miscuing shots)
* England team
* England & Bangladesh flags
* distance indicator for lofted shots
MODIFIED
* adjusted how edges & lofted shots are handled
* improved CPU batting (now uses late & upper cut, leg glance and hook) & bowling (uses stock balls more and makes better choices)
* improved CPU fielding (chases balls down properly, fewer overthrows, better field placings)
* fixed up partnership scorecard & added a Fall of Wicket list to the bowling scorecard
* fixed up the editors so they display correctly (still need to resize the controls, but at least it's more usable now)
* fixed up player attributes for all teams
Cheers

This project isn't dead people, don't worry :P Just been trying to update the physics (top and bottom edges work properly now) and the AI (better batting, bowling and field placings). It's a pain to balance the game play though. Anyway, just now I played a sweep shot to Jayasuriya and I top-edged it and it rebounded off the top of my pad and he caught it. Not bad

i like the updates a lot man. the game seams pretty cool since last i played. a few bugs i spotted, well one, was in the menu option when choosing the number of teams in a tournament, t20 and i chose 2 teams, but 2 seemed to be -1 in the progress bar, and 3 was a t 0. if that makes sense, the progress bar went backwards into the writing outside of the block meant to contain it :)
cool work on the game though im liking it;
