Right, so it's Christmas, and, sadly, we have magazines to make anyway. Go figure. Writer's deadline's a little later in the month than usual, mostly because I still have no idea when Q's getting back from his holiday, so I'm trying to accommodate for the design deadline.

So...

Deadline: Sunday 28 December

News

Opinion

Oh, look, we already have one of these, because, er... someone forgot to put this in last month, and, er... yeah, let's not talk about that. >_>

Feature

Shall we attempt to get hold of the creator of Iji for an interview. He used Game Maker for the game after all, so it may pan out quite nicely. (Tr00jg?)
You can get him at: http://www.remar.se/daniel/siteimg/mail.gif

Review

Iji (Gazza/Lions/both/neither/lol?)
Penny Arcade Adventures Ep 2 (Gazza)
Local reviews - Killer Worm (LionsInnards)

Development

Irrlicht (Fuzzyspoon)?
Blender (Chippit)
Another random sound article thing? (Nandrew)
Flash stuff, yo. (Nandrew)
Something on Collision Detection in 2D, please. It's about time we handle the basics here. ([i]?)

Tailpiece

? (?)
Massive photo collage on rAge, perhaps? Anyone took lots of piccies? I, sadly, did not.

I've got three (crappy) photos if you do go with the rAge picture thing. First one has random people. Second one has horrendous quality. Third is, like, okay. But they're here in case you do want them. Which you shouldn't. :P

(5mpx. Taken using a phone = fail.)

On Iji, I'd settle for both, if Gazza wants to share. I have a nice idea for the review, but I would enjoy working with him. Also, Killer Worm is proving difficult to review.

That's an idea. Lion and I can both submit a review, and then Chippit can select the best one or combine them somehow. That means he can do some work for a change. :P

I think I've already contributed sufficiently for the month. :<

... but I may look at more stuff. :) Gimmeh some time to think. May write a sound piece, and at least help brainstorm for Tailpiece. I'm reluctant to have a rAge photo-opp in there, since we copped out with that theme last year, there's not an abundance of photos this year (to my knowledge) and time's wearing on a bit.

Umm ... similarly with the opinion I gave ... it's turning into cold toast by now and I'm simply not armed with the righteous flaming fury imbued by Internets at the moment. Are you sure you still want that to be put in? Mebbe I should revise it.

Nah, I'll use it. We've not really mentioned anything about that event in the magazine anyway, so it'll hardly be old news to the readers. Just us, perhaps. Still reads well either way, though, so I think it's good. ;)

Righto. Will get onto the Iji interview. :)

!

Damn good point. Kensei was looking at that, right?

dammit: how many of your photos were related specifically to Game.Dev activities? Members playing GH:WT doesn't count. :P

2 serious ones. Danny giving a talk, and a photo of (I think) edg3 playing SpaceHack. Otherwise, there are the three other random photos of game.dev ppl in the game.dev room :P

Oh yeah, and theres one photo specifically of the game.dev t-shirt.

Oh and btw, any question ideas you have for Iji's creator? I'm feeling a bit dry besides the normal dose of questions...

To quote Lion: Hells yeah!

1) What inspired them to make Iji? Why a story-driven platformer?

2) The game takes obvious gameplay inspiration from System Shock, Deus Ex, Blackthorne and Another World. Any other games that helped shape the final game?

3) The sound and music in Iji are kickawesome. How did they put it all together?

4) Did they create any custom tools or systems to help them build Iji, or was it all GM?

5) They use the same polygonal character animation that Another World did, and they mention that Blender was used. How did they go about creating and animating the characters?

6) From the credits, it's obvious that the game was under development for a long time. What took them so long? :P

What sort of illegal awesome-enhancers were you under when you created the game?

Right, emailed the interview. I told him to mail the answers to devmag@gmail.com if he doens't complete it today, since I'm going away tomorrow.

Something on Collision Detection in 2D, please. It's about time we handle the basics here.
After a very, very brief squizz at the XNA API, it seems as if they are making 2D collisions more developer friendly. Having not dabbled in collisions before, are they just providing a fairly standard way of doing this or are they really trying to make it easier?

Right, posting to let everyone know that we're moving this deadline on a little, till the 2nd. Everyone's still on holiday (including myself, lots of distractions :/) so it'd be pointless to force everyone to have things done by today.

Hopefully we'll be able to get everything back to normal soon enough, though.

Additionally, a global request to all Dev.Mag writers:

We're looking at a big 'What we really want for 2009' collaborative tailpiece. For this to work, we'll need everyone (or as many people as possible) to send in ~100 words about what you personally want and are looking forward to in 2009, obviously game development related: which indie games/events/tools/whatever you're looking forward too, personal or community milestones, stuff like that, and then elaborate on that a little. It doesn't need to be long or extensive. If we get responses from enough people, even short little submissions from everyone can make an extensive tailpiece.

Send in your wishlist to either myself or Nandrew (PM or email, whatever), or to the Dev.Mag address (devmag at gmail dot com).

Thankees.

One little caveat:

If possible, it would be great if you could each focus on one (maybe two) issues in particular, rather than rattling off a long list. Should help reduce repetition and will give readers a clearer insight on individual events and the like. ;)

Yeah, perhaps my use of 'wishlist' was in error. More wish, less list. :P

Right, time for the traditional reminder. Please have everything in today or tomorrow by the latest.

Thanks. ;)
