The Times (formerly Cape Times?) has run an article on UCT's game development course, basically an "Oh, look at this" piece. Thanks for the heads up, Luke.

Games can actually become a career

Well-paying jobs beckon for graduates who just want to play

The hours your teenager spends playing computer games could actually shape his or her eventual career.

Now South Africans can join the global multibillion-dollar gaming industry by going to university to learn how to create their own version of best-selling games like Halo or World of Warcraft.

For the past three years, students studying a BSc in computer science at the University of Cape Town have been able to specialise in computer gaming.

After graduating, they are able to fill regular roles available to computer science graduates such as developers, system designers and programmers — and have additional skills allowing them to assist in developing games on mobile devices, desktop computers and gaming consoles.

...

So Game.Dev and the greater community at large isn't mentioned at all. How do we fix that? ;)

an iron bar, the journalist's address and 10 minutes of "explanation"?

former Cape Times?
The Times is the Sunday Times's new(ish) foray into weekday publishing.

I guess the general public doesn't really travel in the right circles to know anything about this community, or amateur/hobbiest/indie development in general, despite 2DBoy's best efforts.

Speaking of game development and newspapers, Nandrew had an article about the subject in the Saturday Star a few years ago. I still have it on my wall. =)

Microsoft has sponsored hardware and software for its video game console Xbox 360, meaning students “can get their hands dirty”, Marais said, with the real deal.

For all its evil empire stuff, Microsoft certainly has made an enormous effort to promote game development. How to dominate the console gaming industry? Dominate the console gaming development industry, of course. Well played.

Ah, thanks for the info. Didn't know about the Sunday Times branching out like that...

That's sort of what I'm aiming at: People don't know about indie games, or even a local games industry as such. So how do we change that? What can we do with what we have at the moment to be more visible?

I was really happy when Patrick told me about the sponsored 360s, when Aeq and I get down to the Cape, we should all go visit and rant about devving on ye olde bawks.

From my perspective it's obvious to see who is doing the most to win developer's hearts: "Here! Work on our stuff! You can do this and this and this!" vs "We're hard to develop on. Be proud you have the chance, worm..."

Write to the Ed? Your mail may be published, since it is related to something they've already printed, and that's a start.

You could also put fliers on notice boards at universities, especially those with the relevant courses held on campus, as well as in internet cafes. You really never know who might read it.

Seeing as I'm the only person on the forums from Potch university I'd be happy to put up some fliers for you on campus. We've got quite a few people interested in deving here...
