This is all im going to post for now. i have a whole concept, and im deciding on what direction to take the gameplay.

For now all you need to know is :

Use dna to build up a character.

There is a ten minute limit to the time your advanced dna handling machines can handle the dna outside of the body (part of the story)

There are special pieces of dna you grab along the way. such as wings, cool x-ray vision and such. these are all placeable if they dont die before you can use them (they have a lifespan as well)

For now, this is some thing so u get how i mean.

hehe, no there will be (depending on time) more then one mode of gameplay. the first im making is time attack mode. this is for comp 17, ill expand the modes to make actually unique characters in the game next
depending on time, though, im sure i will finish time attack in my design. ill clarify more when i got a playable demo up

think of it as more of a mini game, with some twists,

it plays on your ability to think and to concentrate, at the same time...
Its a lot of hand eye coords, and its gonna be intriguing to implement. im writifn up the design just now, hopefully later i will fully exapnd my ideas :)

Funny enough its not really like those games.

I picked up a book this weekend, and i started reading it. its called game writing handbook. Ill review it for the next devmag, but its changed my approcah a little toward designs of games and such..so i will write up more soon, just reevaluating this game idea under new concepts... to make it better

Update :

Got all my media loaded and ready for action, started implementing gameplay but have decided to think a lot more in terms of how you play. It seemed my original ideas were complex and confusing and were gonna make it take too long to implement, so iv gone with a less complex more fast paced style of gameplay. i will definately expand soon, working on prototype first then detaisl :)

IMPORTANT UPDATE

I rewrote the story with a friend of mine and we have come up with a concept.

I have devised a name (DIS please change the name in the title)

The title : antisense


A DNA sequence is called "sense" if its sequence is the same as that of a messenger RNA copy that is translated into protein. The sequence on the opposite strand is called the "antisense" sequence.

antisense RNA sequences are produced, but the functions of these RNAs are not entirely clear.



This fits REALLY well wiht the story, trust me :D

VERRRY soon i will post a LOT more details and perhaps a demo, but for now... the "logo"

I spent, over 3 hours thinking long and hard about this. lol, the intro actually really tripped me up. Thanks to my friend varmint, i figured out fade animation in c++. lol, i decided to break outta the comforts of the .NET idea, and make this full out in 10 days. Thats my deadline, the 28th, feb, 2008.

here is the beginnings, the framework has taken some time to build into the new engine. but its much much more flexible. This is just the intro. The sound was made in fruity loops.
This is not anything except a beginning (there is a LOT more complete)

I am going to fill in the story piece by piece as i release the demos. This, is the first release just so you guys know what im working towards!

A diary, journal of discovery. Dated 28th feb 2008

The vacant cell screams echoes of silence. Is this where it all ends?

Its cold in here, but my mind is racing. I have had nothing to eat for over 160 days...maybe they think im dead. My DNA abnormalities might have fooled them but i understand my predicament. i must escape this containment, i must defeat this curse.

Patient file : John Watson-Crick


Human DNA is based on proteins and compunds with hydrogen base pairs. But this patient showed extreme pale skin as a symptom of an irregular DNA genome. This cannot be, as this breaks the rules of what we know. The patient DNA has an element found in RNA, which subsequently breaks the understanding of our own DNA. Below i found this journal on the internet

"ref : Uracil is a pyrimidine which is common and naturally occurring.[1] Uracil was originally discovered in 1900. It was isolated by hydrolysis of yeast nuclein that was found in bovine thymus and spleen, herring sperm, and wheat germ.[2] Uracil is a planar, unsaturated compound that has the ability to absorb light[3]"

This last property is worrying the team and I, is this why his skin is near white in colour? Further examination will be carried out. Patient is in holding until further breakdown of the DNA can be performed.



A few side notes. this entire game is based on the real known and proper research of DNA. All characters, names, even the data you play with in game is based on reality, whats living inside you now. its fascinating stuff, and im pretty certain is gonna make a lot more interesting games after this mini game!
Im really enjoying this, and will continue a series of game based on this, i find it to be quite the fantastical approach to gameplay.

I finished my menu and setup, i will be working furiously on gameplay from now.

I have written an entire animation system into this thats why its taken me long...Though i must admit its paid off. i am VERY pleased with the results.

= nanobots extract your dna information and collect fragments of the molecular structure of your bodys proteins as resources for building new dna bases.

= these resources are processed into dna bases on a time basis and are collected for rebuilding the final hybrid genome.

UPdates, im nearly finished major gameplay, simple bugs are plentiful(as is expected) BUT the good news is its mostly animations. Once i finish animating all the coloured blocks, i can integrate them into the game.

Then its a matter of a timer, and boundary checks, and a formula, and ill be done. hoping to get a demo out really soon. I know it seems i never get to releasing a demo but c++ is not as easy as GM to bang out a full game concept in a couple of minutes :D im priding myself on finishin this entire game (from first line of code) to less then 10 days... im pretty sure i can finish! lets hope for no unexpected badgers stealing my mouse and destroying the inner cabling of my IDE cables and i shud be ok.

BAckup your data kids! its the right thing to do.

The graphics do look incredible, and I really like the base concept - I intend on trying the demo soon! ^_^

[edit] I really like the menu system, although the specific location of each option is not always immediately obvious - for example, I ended up accidentally clicking on the quit button a few times (I hadn't yet realised that it was a menu-only demo, and so was trying to get a reaction from the program ^^; ). It does look great, however. ^_^

Thanks for the comments, i got tricked by some of the gameplay maths but after a bit of thinking me and my friend devised a formula which seems to be functional meaning gamplay is "working", i just need to show it then. this is nearly done then hopefully ill get a demo out for testing..

Fair enough - although I wouldn't count on all players reading the readme file, especially with regards to the use of the menu. ^^;

OK GUYZ, i am making progress i swear. you can actually play now, i just need to stabilise the adding and stuff. when u click add, it adds it to the "grid" it just fails once u hit 11, then its meant to move to next grid. thats easy though, once i can populate the grid properly, i need to add checks for dying(shown in the picture, u cannot stack purple next to purple)... and i need to calculate win values. These are all setup and ready, its just missing the maths.

coming REAL soon. lol, there is a lot i sacrificed in terms of "cool" to get it playable for today, but im gonna further it anyway. So this version is working nicely, just not as " planned "

OK GUYZ. long awaited i know (well lol, not really) but here it is. the first release.

Its more of a tech demo, but its "playable" to get a feel for what im doing.

PLEASE read the readme first, it explains things, along with a HORRIBLE diagram of whats what.

Comments and feedback are more then welcome, there are BLATANT bugs listed in the readme, dont tell me bout what i know find new ones :D

Other than that, there are 2 exes. one is fullscreen(better) and other is windows. the ..exe is fullscreen.


If it complains about configuration you probably need this 2.6 MB download from MS :
its the visual C runtimes.

It looks really good (the flashing of the blocks aside ^^; ). ^_^

Menu music though it may be, the music that you use sounds very good indeed. ^_^

Am I correct in understanding that one can only create and place protein blocks thus far? I was hoping to see what the character output looks like. ^^;

I did encounter a glitch: it seems that one can continue to place red protein blocks, even when one theoretically has none, with the counter dropping down into negative numbers.

I also found that UI elements seemed to respond to the mouse when it was just below them, rather than on top of them, which made interaction a little frustrating at times.

This is looking like the start of something very interesting, however. I really like the idea behind it, and I'm very interested to see what comes of it, presuming that you continue on with the "character battle" concept... ^_^

@music, thanks. will be a lot better im sure when i get more time. you can only place blocks hardly :D it was a test of the dynamics... the red proteins, i knew abotu thanks, missed it in known bugs, and um, UI elemnts, i dont know what u mean by below?? the mouse elements?

As to the UI elements, what I mean is that I found that clicking just below the point at which the control appears to be.

(And I'm referring to those elements within the game itself, rather than the menu controls.)

Having had another look (I'll admit that I was pretty tired when I first tried the game ^^; ), it seems that the problem is in the non-fullscreen version, suggesting that the problem is related to the screen position, title bar, or both. The fullscreen version seems to be fine - my apologies! ^^;

This build looks good, and runs well (apart from the bugs Thaum has already mentioned). I can find no criticism for it as yet. I'm interested in seeing how it all comes together. :)

This is definitely one of those games which requires you to read the rules before you play. As a gamer I shun mere manuals and try and figure it out myself and I got completely lost. That said it looks pretty slick; well done :)

Don't forget the rules of the competition and update your first post with the latest version of your game so that the judges can find it.

You can figure it out as you go, im sure. because most of the buttons are inactive until you choose one that makes sense. Although, you will most likely die within the first minute, you may still learn to play but you wont understand how it works :)

For the most part there is a hell of a lot of strategy invovled actually. Being careful what you put where and how you spend the processor time is key to getting something useful... For example the red protein may have stats like : strength 5, speed 6, endurance 1. then if you add a lot of them your character arm 1 stats will show a strong fast arm but that will be very tired very soon.so it would make more sense to balance it out and plan ahead. giving the 10 minutes and the processing times a lot of affect on the gameplay, its a little slower in the beginning. as you start placing proteins you will find adverse as well as beneficial conditions to having the stats build. :D

I am hoping (depending on time) to make a video, for the intro that will show the story and such...i have it ready for action, just integrating video in my code means "thinking time" cos as with the rest of my code i want it cross platform. So im actually finishing game dynamics, which is so close to done.

Unfortunately, DownThemAll just reported "Server Error", that I saw, and, on attempting to resume, a 404 error. :/

I do hope that you manage to fix the problem, and that it's still considered a valid entry. ^^;

Oh, i fixed the upload... shud work... timeout on uplaod made it 0 bytes. then, when i was reuploading u wud get 404

The graphics are some cut up photos, the non photo stuff i made by hand using Paint Shop Pro X.
The elements of the PDA itself, were half chopped up from an image i found online, i will credit it when i find it again, as well as the others.

This versions playing is ok,. but the handligng of the mechanics seriosuly is bothering me. lol i cant believe i released this :D consider it a alpha. L:D

As to the graphics, fair enough - but please do credit when you find out, and if they're not stock images, or you don't get permission from the creators of the images, please find replacement images for the final version. ^_^

That shud help, the others were found on some no name site, as to why its taking time to find out, by emailing the site owners about the pictures i aim to credit. if i cant, as is with any image, i would find one i can credit, or i will make my own :)

As to the game itself, it's a cool start. ^_^

As this seems to be the non-fullscreen version, I'm afraid that the UI control element problem seems to have reappeared - controls are operated slightly below their apparent position, it seems (although the "save character" button seems to activate a little above its apparent position, ironically).

I do have three suggestions:

1) Indication of the value (or values) of each protein.
2) Icons or names beside each DNA slot, indicating what they each correspond to (I think that I can guess at the correspondences, but it would be a little friendlier to players if these were stated explicitly, I think.
3) Clearer timer numerals - while the current set is cool, I found them a little too obfuscated at times - they don't really support a quick glance at the time very well, I don't think.

(I'm sorry to hear that you were sick, by the way - nothing serious, I hope?)

DA has always had rips, and always will have rips.. along with every other industry in the world..

The UI, i need to hear from others if its a problem, cos i have none of that in both fullscreen and non fullscreen...

impossible atm, these are dynamic and cannot be precalculated, but the future will hold mouseovers PER on-the-grid proteins, as well as a couple of other ideas such as undo functions on placement within processor usage etc. per nano bot processor take ups, etc...

Oversight is my best friend, thanks for this.
Slot 1 : Arm 1
Slot 2 : Arm 2
Slot 3 : LEgs
Slot 4 & 5 : Mods

There is meant to be way more intricacy in this, its already THERE just not implemented. BUT good news is i will fix it soon to be all controlled, and informative. The missing things are things like, combos, placement restrictions and the mods being stuff like flight, powers etc... cos u can physically alter ur structure

Bah i debated last minute on adjusting the font but had no time. I barely finished the screen shot code at 11 : 51 and the ftp was timing out, the forums werent loading. but yea, its noted thanks...

For the story, there will be coherent story, video and flashbacks, intros etc, and the "lead off" into my next game, following this story in a nice way.

Later it will be possible to perhaps use the character once built in another game... who knows :D

But for now, this entry is horrid(imo) and thats that. im happy i entered, but i know 1.1 will be out in the next week or so, and will be 1 millions times more complete and cool D;

Hey, don't worry, I'm pretty sure that you have the beating of my hasty entry. ;)

As to DevART, true, but nevertheless I think that it's a good thing to talk to those found to be doing so about it. If I recall correctly, two of the three people that I contacted recently replied quite amicably, one indicating that they could change the section in question if it's found to be disallowed for such use, and the other person having taken down the items in question, as I recall.

I just downloaded it, (v1.0) and when I start it up, the screen goes blank with a grey box in the middle, i hear a "grrrrrr" sound and the that stupid "send" or "Don't send" message comes up.

I'll try and redownload later or it may be the PC :)

that is weird, for the most part its solidly uilt so it shudnt crash, jsut check the validity of the data files. those are needed to run... without them it will crash
