View Full Version : Hosting for files of size greater than 10MB

I have a (sort-of-complete*) game that I've been wanting for some time to upload. Unfortunately, at just under 16MB (when zipped), it's over the maximum allowed by the Game.Dev Filecloset host.

I've been told that the person in charge of the Filecloset host has been absent for some while, and so I suspect that attempting to contact this person would be unlikely to help...

Does anyone have a recommended solution to this, and if so, what is it? If another host is involved, how reliable and accessible is it? I've gathered, for example, that a few people here have had problems with Rapidshare, and so I would prefer to avoid that host.

My thanks for any help given. ^_^

*By which I mean that it works, but lacks sound and music, could probably use some balancing, and, being a two-player game, could use an AI opponent and network play system.

Edit: Just remember, the file is only hosted for 1 month.

I am a very silly person. Why don't you just use Megaupload? :)

You could pay a small fee every month for a cheap webhost and keep the file on there. Or look for a free one and do the same thing. There used to be quite a few reasonable free hosts out there. Dunno what they're like now though, or if they even still exist.

It might be a good idea going the host route: You could set up a website to showcase your games too ;)

If all else fails, I'll grab the file when it's up on temporary hosting and stick it on the Game.Dev webserver.

Thank you both for your help! ^_^

Hm... You make a good point about finding web hosting, Dislekcia. Perhaps it is time that I looked into that...

I had considered taking a paid subscription at GameDev.net, but I'm no longer convinced that it's the best bet - although it does offer some hosting space.

In the meanwhile, I think that I will go with Cyberninja's suggestion of Megaupload - I take it that no-one has any problems with Megaupload, or reasons that it might be unwise for me to use it? (I want to do a few things before I upload, such as write up a readme and game play instructions, and perhaps work a little on the spell balance and list.)

I see that Megaupload does automatically delete files after a certain period (if I understood correctly), but I'm happy with that, as I intend this to be temporary file hosting while I decide on web hosting.

Does anyone have a suggestion for web hosting? My mom uses Afrihost (http://www.afrihost.co.za/); does anyone know of better?

You could try this host: IX Web Hosting (http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/pages.dspmain)

They're cheap: $3.95
And they give you lots of webspace: 300GB

I use Serv hosting. They are excellent. Quick support, great up-time, huge space and quite decent bandwitdth (12g on smallest package).

Both my sites are on R24 pm packages. Bargain.

http://drop.io/

i've had no problems and find its very nice

you dont even have to sign up for it and you choose when your file is deleted (up to a year if im correct)

all you need to do is give people the URL and the password (if you put one on)

drop.io/helpshot1
this is an example! :)

We're also using www.serv.co.za at the moment, and have had no problems to date. R24p/m for 12gb traffic and 1gb disk space.

SkinkLizzard

or go to www.hostistry.com for a free webhost
get an account and last i checked you had 100gig disk space
and 100Gb traffic

Thank you very much, everyone! ^_^

From what I've read here, it sounds as though Serv is probably the web host to go with.

In the meanwhile, I've uploaded my file to Megaupload - although unfortunately it seems that at the point at which I attempted to download the file all of the download slots for South Africa were in use. >_<

Hopefully that will have freed up a little by the time that someone else attempts to download it. ^_^;

Of course, if anyone has anything further to add, please do! ^_^

Hi Thaumaturge

Yes its true that I'm a lurker, but I'm not absent ;)

I can increase the upload size if needed, but the problem is because its a website you need to upload it via a browser and if the browser times out before the upload is completed, you have wasted x amount of bandwidth and x amount of time.

If you want your own hosting I would agree with Tr00g by using www.serv.co.za (Filecloset is hosted by serv), they are the best priced in South Africa for International Hosting. But you can also private message me and I will give you a ftp account where you can upload your game to gamedev.za.net.

Thank you very much, d-_-b - I appreciate the offer and the recommendation. ^_^

I think that I am going to go with Serv, from what I've seen - once I come up with a domain name that I'm happy with (and which is available, of course), that is. ^_^;

I'm confused, what happened to the not-quite-that-ancient art of file spanning? Winrar can do it really easily. 8MB chunks of zipfile should be too hard to organise and then host on FileCloset, surely?

Heh, I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't think of that for some reason. ^^;;;

(Presuming, I suppose, that I did think of it, discarded it for some reason, and have forgotten.)

That would indeed work pretty well - yes, why not. Who knows how long I might take on deciding on a name. ^^;

I'll upload a spanned version to Filecloset shortly, then, I believe - thank you for the suggestion. ^_^

[edit] I seem to be having a problem - I managed to get part one uploaded, but subsequent uploads don't seem to have been appearing. I've deleted part 1, and intend on trying again either later today or tomorrow (presuming that I don't decide on my domain name before then, of course :P).

Pushbutton.co.za (http://www.pushbutton.co.za/) is a nice local filehost.
Up to 25mb/file If I remember correctly.

Thank you, Wir. ^_^

Unfortunately, it seems that, at the moment at least, they have reduced their maximum file size to 5MB, apparently as a result of abuse.

Are you sure you made them public?

Thaumaturge
27-11-2007, 05:40 AM
As I recall, they didn't even show up in my user area, let alone in the main file listing - I would imagine that even non-public files should appear in my user area.

(To actually answer your question ( ^^; ), I seem to recall that I forgot once, but did mark the "public" checkbox on most occasions - I tried the upload a few times, as I recall,)

Yes, you're right non-public files also appear in your user area, if I remember correctly, they are the ones that are not coloured orange.

go to pages.google.com and make your own page. they allow 100MB web space, and no traffic limits.

Thank you, Falafel. ^_^

I've decided, however, to go with Serv hosting - it's just a matter of settling on a name now, as I mentioned earlier in the thread. (Yes, I'm still stuck, although I have some potential ideas that may, if not themselves chosen, lead me to better names. ^^; )

That's the thing - as I recall, they weren't appearing in my user area. o_0

I just found a add on for Firefox that lets you use gmail for space....

Thaumaturge
04-12-2007, 04:19 AM
Hmm... I do have a GMail account, if I recall correctly (I think that that's what I used to sign up here) - does the space that you mention allow one to host a web page as well?

|-|1Pp13
04-12-2007, 11:26 AM
i honestly have no clue. gonna check because its an interesting concept. im not sure if its for private files or public (or if you can choose)

EDIT:

This extension allows you to use your Gmail Space (4.1 GB and growing) for file storage. It acts as an online drive, so you can upload files from your hard drive and access them from every Internet capable system. The interface will make your Gmail account look like a FTP host.
After the installation, you'll get an option called "Gspace" in your "Tools" menu, which opens the GSpace window.

It's great for storing/sharing files with your friends. Also very good to backup photos and music files (as you can view/listen to them from Gspace).

If you have any problems with the extension, please look at the FAQ page (http://getgspace.com/faq.html). If your question is not listed or the solution doesn't apply to your specific question, please email the current developer (Fon Labs).

* DISCLOSURE: Gspace uses statcounter.com service to track the usage of the extension

its a Firefox extension

That gmail storage thing is only a personal storage option, you're not hosting files for other people to be able to download.

To Whom It May Concern:

Please DO NOT use anything that requires the Megaclick/Mega Uploader toolbar.

It is Malware

Thanks in advance

Sorry all, I sort of assumed nobody would use those kinds of upload toolbars, they're well known to be spyware/adware/malware... That's why I wasn't recommending it. Should have been more vocal, my bad.

Thaumaturge

Heh, I'm afraid that as I recall I only realised after using it that using Megaupload reasonably would call for a toolbar installation - spyware and malware aside, I'm not a fan of toolbar installations.

My own apologies to all - I should have researched Megaupload more assiduously before using it.

Hopefully I'll soon enough have that web hosting that I intend on getting, and will provide a better download link than the one that I ended up using for the file in question. ^^;

it takes you to a megaclick page

To unistall:
1) Unistall from your toolbar/add-ons in your browers
2) theres an exe somewhere you need to uninstall using Add/Remove programs (I would also run CrapCleaner after that just to make sure its dead and gone)

thing is I download stuff from megaupload
so I kinda need the toolbar, now if only I could find the toolbar options page
as it says you can disable the redirect.
