Some of you may remember me from previous iterations of the game.dev forums. Well I'm back, but not quite for good. I have too much on my plate atm to do heavy game dev, but my creative brain still works, so i have a game idea to share with you today.

I have only written out a summary, feel free to elaborate as you see fit. I thought of this design for a platformer, but any game genre goes. I'm basically releasing this under public domain, but there are a few minor restrictions. Firstly I would like to know what your progress is. Secondly I must be able to play this game. Notice the "must" ;) Here goes:

You are a time consumer. They were ancient artifacts created to serve the <> lord of <>. The <> lord feared the power of the time consumers and ordered them to be destroyed. You are the only time consumer. At you core is a time crystal. To react your revenge on <> lord, you set out to gather all the time crystals and become the most powerful being in all of <>.

A time crystal enables you to freeze time for a while. The more time crystals you have the faster they recharge and the longer you can use them.

To do damage to enemies: you can punch them horizontally or kick them up. You can also attack objects in the levels. Enemies can shoot you with large missiles or try cut you with swords. Touching a missile or sword normally will cause you major damage, but when time is frozen, you can touch or even jump on them.

My only worry about this idea is that it may be a tad limiting. Enjoy! :)

This could be quite interesting. I'm thinking that you could have no weapons, and have to use your time stopping ability to survive. To this end, you should be able to turn missiles and things around.

Of course, there should be a limit to how long you can pause time for, to make things challenging.

Yes. There would be a sort of time limit that recharged slowly. Faster the more 'crystals' you have. No weapons would be best. I like the idea of manipulating objects slightly, like diverting missiles, this could use up a bit of your 'freeze time' power to limit use.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. Ditch the normal combat. You must only use time control to divert missiles and stuff like it.

p.s. good to see you back here.

A possible way to use the ability would be as follows: You kick a box up into the air. Then you freeze time. Then you can jump up onto the box and onto a higher ledge.

LIQUID.SILVER? You're back!!! \0/

I like the idea, and considering your legendary knack for puzzle platformers I think this could turn out very nicely indeed. :D

Thanx Gazza_N, glad to see you're still here. I was not really planning to do much game dev atm. I'm really giving this idea to the community and hoping something will come out that i wanna play myself. I might give some constructive criticism on my part, but i'd prefer to let someone else do the main work.

I remember seeing a GM extension allowing time control somewhere, just can't remember where. :)

The idea of survival via time sounds good, maybe I'll give it a try if I can get an artist :)

Don't think you really need to use an extension. Especially seen as not all the objects, like yourself, will be affected by time freezes. And it's not really time control per say, just frozen time to a halt.

Although, maybe you can only just slow the time and then later bring it to a complete stand still. Could work... might be better. Still don't think an extension is needed. It'll probably just complicate things.

@Bonezmann: go for it with squares and pseudo graphics. most of my first prototypes are made with squares with symbols on them. this way you can adjust the game before you start with graphics. all my games start with simple graphics. if a prototype with squares is fun, proper graphics should just be better. i personally can only do pixel art, and not that well, but after i see a prototype, i might consider helping in that department.

Okay then, I'm busy with a few projects myself but as soon as my entry for Comp 19 is complete(needs music and sound) and uploaded, I'll give it a go. :)

Okay sure. No rush. Anyone is welcome to give it a bash. It's a free game idea.

Things are going VERY rough atm, but I do have something small. It's just a block moving left to right on a floor (with some gravity). I'll see if I can get somewhere tonight. :)
