Okay, so the MMO thing isn't going to work so I'm thinking of making a good old single player RPG. Here are all the details:
Before I begin explaining, I would like to make it clear that I don't intend to insult, offend or make a mockery of any member or the forums. It's just meant for good, clean fun. Good, let's start.
The game will revolve around the forums, it's members, and other stuff. I will use members from the forums as characters, and depending on their nicknames/tags they will be a character or represent an object or weapon in the game.
The game will also extend with time, so existing players can just continue with the story while new players can start from the beginning. This means it will be one release, and players just replace their old files with new releases.
Now as my plan stands so far, the game will have four main areas:
- The n00b hut, this is where you start off and choose your direction
- Gaming village(needs a name), where you go if you choose the gamer profession.
- Off topic village(needs a name), where you go if you choose the grammar and spelling soldier
- Game.dev City, where you go if you choose the game developer profession.
I've worked out some quests, so don't worry about those either.
Now here are some existing ideas I have to include some members:
- You communicate with your profession officer through your onona phone
- Cleric is the Profession officer for grammar (see title)
- KFC owns a chicken farm just outside off-topic village
- JD owns an art gallery or a Mudkip/pokemon farm somewhere
- The archives are old ruins
- Brazed stays in a cave just above Gaming and Off-topic village
- Miktar lives in Dracon Castle and RedTide is a mythic being.
There are more but I'm stopping due to post-length.
Enemies you will confront:
- Trolls
- Spammers
- flamers
Each with a Ragequit(selfdestruct) ability.
Weapons:
Anything from a guitar hero controller to a gamepad :p
Anyone is welcome to contribute to this project with anything that might help.
I'm not sure if this is such a great idea, especially now, do you guys think it could work?
edit: btw, I'm already working on the maps... :D
UPDATE
download RTP libraries and runtimes here:
http://tkool.jp/products/rpgxp/eng/rtp_download.html
It's just to minimize future downloads, as it contains sprites or something. I'm going to compress ad upload C0 now.
Okay, first post will update soon. Here it is: Enjoy...
notes
This is a sort of an "introduction" to the rest of the game. So it's VERY short. In fact there is only one battle. It's just to test the basic stuff, like interactions and basic attack names in the battle.
I'd just like to make it very clear that this game is purely for entertainment purposes, and by publishing it and it's content, I do NOT whatsoever wish to degrade the status of the magazine nor the forums. This game is PURELY an interpretation of things going on on the forum and I do not wish to insult anyone, neither a member nor a moderator and least of all NAG magazine. If, however, you do find anything offensive, PM me and I will remove the current link, remove the offensive material and then republish. I write this for all those insensitive members who can't take a joke. All and all this game is meantto be just for the fun of it. and by downloading it you state that you have read and agrred with the above. Thanx
Do you guys the think the above is necessary? I just like to cover my own ass Anywayz, download link below.

I am curious to see this implemented :)
I assume you are making it in Game Maker?
RPGs are not impossible, just likely challenging in GameMaker...er... I think (gurus please confirm ^_^ ) but it would be interesting to see implemented.
How are you planning to do attacks? Turn-based? Real time?
What quests do you have planned?
What will you teach in the tutorial?
Are you planning to have character classes (like you hint at with your professions)?

I don't think he is hoping to make a profit off this. ;) And this is not the first nor the last NAG Forum game we will see (though hopefully we get to play this one :D )

I'm using RPG maker XP, attacks will be turn-based.
What quests do you have planned?
At the moment, stuff like delivering threads to the archives, moving threads from one village to the other with a plot in between. I still have to figure out the plot, so please fire away with suggestions. edit: in a specific quest, for instance, you have to find a certain member's dictionary/thesaurus. And as a added comment, I'm going to try and give each profession their ow weapons/spells, but I'm not sure how I'll do this, maybe with switches. Anyways, I plan it so that the S&G soldiers use dictionaries as weapons and big words for spells. (Although this might not realize)
What will you teach in the tutorial?
Well, it depends. The tutorial will take place at the n00b hut (complete with imaginary couch, porch and flame thrower) where you will be tought basic battle skills, choose your profession and get your onona phone.
Are you planning to have character classes (like you hint at with your professions)?
Well, since this I'm trying to stay strictly to the forum stuff here, there will be three classes:
- Gamer
- Grammar and spelling soldier
- Game developer
in other words, there is only one class(humans) but the diversity comes in from the professions.
These may change, I might add one more or remove some. It depends how it goes. :)
And this is not the first nor the last NAG Forum game we will see (though hopefully we get to play this one )
I still wish I could get a server for my Nagland MMO ;)
(If anyone could tell me who burned down the imaginary couch, I'd appreciate it. if you guys can remember)

I could help with sprites. Iv handled rpg maker before. So i know how the sprites work. The battle system is quite complex so i suggest you fiddle with that before you decide to go through with this. It has its own action script, which takes a while to get used to. I suggest joining the rpgxp community for tips and battle systems. Good luck bud! Im keen to see where this goes!

Sounds like an interesting game concept: RPGmaker is a good choice, Cloud Ratha does some really nice sprite work and if you're reducing scope down from an MMO, I don't see why this shouldn't get to a playable stage :)
We've even got some experienced RPGmaker guys on the forum, I'll bother Ajust and tell him to keep an eye on this thread for questions.

Sounds quite good. Are you going to have different levels / stages in the game? Like a Mario Bro's type game or will you implement it like Diablo where you can go back to previously visited places?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm making an adventure game myself with GM7 and I find the turning back to previous "rooms" quite easy using the right scripting methods.

Thanx, would appreciate it. :)
HolyMackerel, I'd suggest you use RPGMaker XP. It's a really nice and easy program to use.
I worked out the N00b level today, now I need some of your input:
Should I release a Chapter 0: Quest of teh n00b? Or should I release "Chapter 0" along with Chapter 1?
I intend on making it worth playing either way, thoughts?

When can we get a version?

Release NOOOOOWWWW :D
<ahem> I mean, you should release as many incarnations as humanly possible to maximize input.
The whole teaser 'Look how cool this game is' only works with big game companies, dislekcia and Aequitas... Oh and I guess Azimuth/Chippit is also included

It's not what I'm trying to do, but thanx for the heads up... :)
Nonetheless, as soon as I have Chapter 0 set up, I'll release it.
Oh and did I mention that at one time you will have either a chicken or a Mudkip for companions?

I'm guessing your game is more of an experiment, you first throw an idea out there and see what response it gets.
The game could be good or bad, depending on how you implement it. I think you should keep the end product in mind during the design stage, and throughout development. Also keep room for change, sometimes an idea seems good in thought but in action it might not work as well as you thought.
After you post a prototype we will be able to give you some more helpful advice.

Not really an experiment as much as doing something I wanted for a long time. I've made a few incomplete games in GM7, and also Sprit episode 1 in RPG maker. So it's not as much an "experiment".
Now if you would excuse me, I'm off to see which side Stalker_103 took in the Darth vs. Marcus thread :D

From what i remember from rpg maker was the ruby script (or some other precious stone). Its really hard to get the battle system right. Its not just editing. If u want to do special effects it takes some know how. But luckily there are a lot of people eager to help out. I love spriting. Iv made 50 marvel sprites now. Im so happy drinking now!

Downloaded, played and looking forward to more. See if you can change the word Attack to Post Quick Reply and then we need A LOT more skillz.
If you're making an RPG make sure you have an interesting story to tell and not just references to the forums. If you have the bandwidth listen to this podcast from GDC Radio (A Practical Guide to the Hero's Journey (http://www.gdcradio.net/2007/01/a_practical_guide_to_the_heros.html)) and use what you were taught in English class.
I'm looking forward to seeing what's next!

That Post Quick Reply is awesome, there should be a place where I can change that. I'll see about that Poscast though, only have around 700mb left for the month, but thanx. :)

I downloaded RPG Maker XP. From the menu: Tools -> Database; the System tab; on the right-hand side under Words you can change Attack, Skill, Defense, etc. Unfortunately it's character limited so might I suggest changing Attack to Post Reply, Skill to New Thread or Riposte and Defend to Lurk.
Remember to have lots of troll monsters :P

I played a fan based final fantasy made with rpg maker
the creator had changed the options to attack, berserk defend and flee
attack would then give you a menu for weapon skill item, while berserk would have all party members
attack with their weapons (like a quick reply).
one thing the feedback for successful attacks is rather confusing I couldn't quite tell who was damaging who or doing what, otherwise its awesome :) :) I wants more.
another side note there's an English translation of the rtp.

Sounds like a good idea! Even if it's NAG specific I think anyone who has participated in a game forum (or any forum) would relate to the concept, NAG being used as an example of general online forum behavior.
Could you include Moderators? Like in Ultima when you attacked a civilian a wizard would teleport in and blow you up? Though Moderators would also wipe out Trolls and Flamers, except when the Trolls are working late at night while the Moderators are asleep, or during working hours when the Moderators have day jobs.
Could a moderator be turned over to the dark side? (not that that has happened at NAG, but it could be interesting) After a really bad review at rAGE he/she flips out and decides to ruin the lives of everyone in NAGland, befouling avatars and deleting the accounts of all that try oppose him/her. To defeat this evil moderator you will have to contact the Administrator to acquire moderator powers yourself.
In NAGland you can only post threads after being accepted by the moderators (at least in my experience), so the Newb level would be working towards this. Posting a new thread could be a metaphor for accepting a quest perhaps?
Could you pick-pocket avatars through private messages? Add members to your team through friend requests?
Fengol
16-02-2009, 05:47 PM
Could a moderator be turned over to the dark side?
Can a moderator be your father?
But that's an interesting hook. As a quest, class or job can you become a moderator?
BlackShipsFillt
16-02-2009, 06:22 PM
It makes sense that in a world based on the NAG forum there be a hierarchy of power.
Beginning at Newbs, who could be children, critters or peasants
To full members, who could be adults or adventurers, with the possiblity of gaining priviledge and reputation in within this level
To moderators who could be powerful wizards, bosses, kings, or maybe just the police
To the Administrator who could be a godlike or oracle entity.
Perhaps there could be mention of the "Host" although only the Administrator has file-access to it. The Host would burn the burn the mind of any mere member with it's PHP brilliance. File-access to the host could be what the evil moderator is after, along with the ability to skin the forum to his/her preferred shade of purple...
sorry, I'm off on a tangent.
Fengol
16-02-2009, 06:36 PM
you mean the Holy Host surely?
Well, what about rival forums (thinking Prophecy forums) invading NAGLand, sending in trolls which the player must slay?
HAHAHAHAHA, I can just imagine High Lord Miktar exclaiming "Only you young adventurer can save my kingdom. Take the onona phone of truth and shield of Azimuth's wrath and venture forth!"
Bonezmann
16-02-2009, 07:02 PM
BlackShipsfillt and Fengol: YOU.ARE.GENIUSSES
Suggestions noted, the ones that I can make work will be in the game...
Could you include Moderators?
The moderators are the kings and queens of the villages, while King Miktar rules over all the land. They are also members of the sacred NAG council.
Could a moderator be turned over to the dark side?
Could be a possible plot.
To defeat this evil moderator you will have to contact the Administrator to acquire moderator powers yourself.
Refer to first sentence in my post.
In NAGland you can only post threads after being accepted by the moderators
This is already in the game, but instead of King Miktar himself, a representitive tests your metal. ;)
Add members to your team through friend requests?
Sounds nice, will see if I can do that.
To the Administrator who could be a godlike or oracle entity.
In this case, the administrator is the King of the land, whereas his boss is a mythic entity.
Well, what about rival forums (thinking Prophecy forums) invading NAGLand, sending in trolls which the player must slay?
I have thought of that, there will likely be such a plot somewhere along the line. :)
Another thing to mention, is that you will be able to upgrade your onona phone, on higher onona phone upgrades you'll be able to call for assistance(in battle), getting one attack from your "master".
Only you young adventurer can save my kingdom. Take the onona phone of truth and shield of Azimuth's wrath and venture forth!"
Read first sentence of my post. ;)

Maybe the spelling & grammar village could be part of a mystical order? They use killer spelling bees in battle & when wounded call for their grammar clerics for healing?
Their sacred charge could be to rid the world of the dreaded lolcats (defilers of the sacred sentence structure & who disdain the virtues of spelling) They can make their home at the base of mount lolcano? Oooh! When a lolcat "bites" you instead of poison you contract "lolilicousness"?
And there'll be two lolcat bosses: longcat & tacgnol! But before you get to them you have to defeat their guardian widedog, who guards the entrance of a cave...
You can even have a secret roflcopter lurking somewhere for players to find ^_^
And Bonezman, sign up an account at kingdomofloathing.com (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com). It'll be a good source of inspiration for this project...

The spelling and grammar army is actually part of "Off-topic" village, since the topics talked about in Off-topic are too general. You do have a few nice ideas, like the dreaded lolcats(They could be like Akatsuki, if you watch Naruto). I'll have to do some lolcat research, since I don't know much about the meme. The lolcano sounds nice, and the roflcopter sounds win too. Remember, although I do write these ideas down, it takes a lot of work. I spent all night last night working on a small "find a key, find true love" quest. So they might not be there immediately. :)
Definately needs to be a cave with a dragon protecting the sacred NAG treasure! with multiple ways to reach the goal and a mysterious exit strategy!
I thought about that, need to figure something out first. Any ideas on how to use RPG XP's system to achieve such a thing?
