There will be a career opportunity opening soon in our primary IT business (Business Gateway) situated in Garsfontein, Pretoria, in the coming weeks.
We will be looking for candidates with solid experience in Microsoft .Net languages, specifically C# and Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
Candidates must be able to work on projects and deliver on time without having to be supervised and solve problems.
The projects our company usually takes on are industrial-use web systems, we would require candidates to understand building user-based systems and securities involved.
Should we be satisfied with the candidate's overall performance there is a chance for involvement in our upcoming game development company, Excentrax Games.
Salary Expectations should form part of your CV or added documentation.
CV's may be forwarded to my business address: jacques dot krige at bizgateway dot biz
Although I know this doesn't hold any specific gamedev topic content, it show a way that may be followed to get into gamedev commercially.
We are at the moment working on sealing deals with various companies for different web development projects.
Good news is these projects will realize Excentrax Games as SA's next game development company in the next few months.
I made a simmilar post on SAGD for candidate CV's.
Skills we are looking for is web development using Microsoft .NET, MSSQL 2005, Good sense of web security, and in addition game development knowledge using self-developed engines, 3rd party engines like TrueVision3D etc. -- game development skills using C#, and a decent sense of FPS technologies used in games like Quake and later.
Candidates showing determination and dedication will stand a good chance to be moved from web development over to game development once product development is mapped-out.
Currently we are focussing on expanding our financial capacity through Business Gateway and gaining a good visibility/marketing foothold through SAGD to better enable a stable Excentrax Games company. :)
You have nothing to loose sending your CV. ;)

I'm debating whether or not to leave this up... At the moment I'm erring on the side of caution and letting it stay. The problem I see is that, yes, while you have a chance of moving over to game development if you're accepted for the position advertised, you probably won't be if you're really good at the web work. You'd have to underperform at the web side of things and visibly mess around with 3D stuff in the office to get the reputation to move over to game development...
That means that most of the people who send in CVs from reading this post would be doing it to get another job that they really want at some unspecified later time... Seeing as I'm an idealist, I don't like that approach too much, it grates with me ;)
Plus, while I understand the way that a base salary amount isn't mentioned in the post, it's a horribly corporate thing to do and preys on the inexperience of applicants. For reference: An entry-level web developer without the advertised skills can expect anywhere from R8 000 - R10 000 a month. A developer with all the skills required would be expecting R14 000 - R25 000, depending on experience, a month...
Please let people know what you're willing to pay, my idealism wants to know ;)

We can debate this if you'd like.. I don't post on sites/forums that I feel might not carry value, and will be a waste of my time.
If you think its not a valid post, by all means.
I see I didn't post that.. depending on the number of contracts we secure, we are looking at a salary between R10000 and R15000 before tax.
It is a very complicated process setting up a game development company in an independant, self-funded manner without making use of Venture Capital.
The position is being made available due to the fact that I'm moving focus over to Excentrax Games to ready it and need a helping hand to make sure the existing work on the IT side of things doesn't slack.
Its not a guaranteed ticket into Excentrax Games, you still need to be skilled.
See it like this, you have to be a good web developer, with game development skills as an added bonus to up your chances to move to Excentrax Games.
See it as a stepping stone.
I want to get people moved into Excentrax Games, but we first need to improve cashflow on Business Gateway.
We are planning two web developer positions at Business Gateway and two (max) game developer positions at Excentrax Games.
To make sound financial choices we need to start hiring on the Business Gateway side of things since this company is the buffer and funding company.
Excentrax Games should be able to start hiring artists by August at the latest, since people needs to get paid for their work, before the company can make the money back when the game product goes gold.
Guessing where the money will be coming from is easy to figure out.
Thats why this thread is relevant the way I see it.
We have lined up quite a few companies for web development work, we are meeting the first company this weekend. If we secure this first contract the plans are set in motion to realize SA's next game development company.
In the first few months there will be no room for doing any kind of gamedev (that doesn't make money) in office hours. Once the company (Business Gateway) has enough sustainable cashflow, gamedev (that does make money) will be done via Excentrax Games with Business Gateway backing financially.
I think its an excellent opportunity to get into or close to a game development company, since the opportunities locally are few or non-existent.
People working for Business Gateway will also be developing online technologies for Excentrax Games where it becomes needed.. there are some gray areas between the two companies.
Our focus now is turning Business Gateway into a real money maker to enable real game development and make that creative and sustainable.

Thanks for clarifying, now people have more of an idea of what to expect should they apply for the position :)

I dunno, I'm not finding it all that difficult. QCF Design is going strong, first game's on track: Just made our first milestone! We're doing a few innovative things with our project structure and focusing heavily on rapid prototyping, which means the client's included from a lot earlier in the production cycle.

It depends on your point of view and scale.
Ours isn't a client-based approach.. kinda like comparing apples with oranges.
I'm intrested in getting to a point fairly quickly to be able to develop a medium-sized game.
Its three years of planning slowly starting to come together. :)
Have offices (and everything that goes with it -- billing-wize), communication, furniture, decent PCs, and ofcourse salaries.
That all could work you out on a tidy sum of close to or over R100 000 a month.
(Did I mention you need to make that back before you turn profitable?)
Thats why I'm "bulldozing" things into action. ;)
Thats why I need to increase our IT capacity with increased web development.

I see, Its interesting none the less. What if in 3 years i have leet hax ad u wanna hire me :>? lol.
I think, if you have clearly defined goals and designs of wher you need to be within timeframes, and place your business ethic higher than determination to make money, as well as determination to succeed, its logically possible. The time frame is whats hard to guess, but if you have it well planned im sure u can manage it.
The self funded idea is the best way to become any sort of game development company, though in my personal view its easier to spend my spare time making games, and when i have a reputation, a portfolio and a good grasp of the WHOLE process of making games, thats when you look for the money in game development. If you have games, you can get backing. Thats like trying to sell apples when youve planted a tree, even to investors they dont see apples. when you have ten trees and some good apples, they will foot the bill for 100 more trees.
I dont think you shouldnt go for it, i like your concept, i just dont have formal qualifications. Though i have experience and knowledge, i have no paper backing and i already have 3 jobs, 1 being free lance grphics and programming. So yea, i wont be able to get on board but i wish you the best of luck.
Keep us posted

This is a pretty cool idea. There are many ways to create commercial games, but what Korax wants to do is hire people and use his other business to fund it. I was trying to go the low budget indie way which works if your employed and don't have a company that can fund your gamedev.
When I can finally start posting new threads (I don't like to spam threads with "thats awesome") I will post some screenshots from that game.
