View Full Version : Where to find a Actionscript programmer?

I've got two questions... one game.dev related, and another that I apologise for in advance.
At some point in the future I want to revive Black Ships Fill the Sky... and I think it would be useful marketing to create a Flash version of it (to complement a monetized iPhone version)... I no longer feel like making it in Flash myself, so want to find someone who can port the game over.
I really don't know where actionscript programmers hang out, any pointers would be appreciated.
The other question is: Is there an actionscript programmer who needs some work who can help out my friend who urgently needs help in exchange for money? (*sorry*)
But seriously, Flash is a reasonable platform to make games in, and good free Flash games do sometimes make a lot of money if they become popular and get ported... I'm surprised to see so little Flash in the South African game development community.

I have no idea where AS programmers hang out either... I'm assuming that most dedicated AS users are dedicated because they're primarily graphic designers with a side-line in AS to make their Flash interactive, so they hang out online in places that graphic designers would hang out... Here you'd tend to find people who can use AS but, much like you do, no longer feel totally into using it if they don't strictly have to ;)
I know that we're glad we don't have to poke AS that much anymore, but that's probably due to frustration with Flash on phones more than anything else.
Have you tried contacting UCT about looking for AS skills? I'm sure there are going to be a few of their CS students that would be keen to help out in exchange for cash/food/beer.

Lots of Flash devs work in advertising. If you know anybody who works at an ad agency (so, basically, you live in Joburg and have at least one friend :P), ask them to put you in contact with one of the junior devs. I have a friend who works in web dev, including Flash AS, but I somehow doubt your friend could afford him - hence my suggesting you look for a junior dev.

There are a lot of AS developers in Durban.
Flash has a pretty awesome community with lots of events and things happening all the time, check out http://groups.adobe.com/ to find any local groups. There is also Flash game dev stuff happening locally, the last Durban Adobe User Group meeting had a pretty cool talk on flixel http://daug.groups.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=post.display&postid=29662
What kind of scope is your friends work? If its small I may be interested, due to full time work though I can't commit to much.
I suggest you go ask some of those groups and see. Also Kyle, the one who gave the flixel talk, has a website and does some freelance work, check it out http://www.kosoftgo.com/

I don't think the guys at UCT are familiar with action script game programming since they were pretty much surprised when one of the GGJ guys mentioned they using AS. It's not the type of software that is in your face like Microsoft's products(XNA/DirectX) so it's not known by guys starting out programming, unless they go out their way to pick up the skill. Graphics design courses that teach flash will just cover basic AS just to get the interface interactive. I see some of the artists going into it a bit more lately since they want to develop games with it. The going rate for AS programmers in game development is R50 per hour.
