At one point someone can to the forums talking about Eclipse Evolution (http://www.freemmorpgmaker.com/index.php) and I coined the term SMO (Scaled Multiplayer Online) and said 24-32 concurrent players would be a good mark to reach like a good CoD4 or CS lan party; and that the leveling, quests and raids should reflect that "lanning scenario".

This fits in with the latter group of the articles hobbyist developers; and maybe while you won't get a subscription client base working from that, I do believe you can sell it as a Diablo type game for larger groups of people to enjoy.

For me, the real joy from Eclipse Evolution came from creating my own world while I was in the game, and a real seller will be a game where you have a fully populated world that the host can manipulate and other players can do drop-in coop or adventuring. Drop-in coop is the current buzzword for multiplayer games and the ability to rapidly craft an adventure is what'll keep people playing.

I'll be happy when my 1v1 (ie 2 players total) text sends properly, nevermind getting it to work behind a game for multiplayer.

I like the article as it points out the important fact that just because they are starting doesnt mean they must give up or be blown off for wanting to do their project, but rather that it should be explained as being what it is, a huge learning curve.
