Signing up for dbp(The apphub part) is a bit of a pain because South Africa isn't on the country list. Any ideas on how to set it up?

you don't have to do anything with app hub in terms of registration.
take your trial code go to xbox live and redeem code ( on x360)
or go to live.xbox.com > under my xbox click redeem code > enter the trial code and redeem.

that has to be done on a uk/us account though, you can use za live. (bronze live accounts do work though)

Hmmm, Ive taken the generated code after registering and tried to redeem it on live.xbox.com but it says I must enter a valid code??

You need to have an xbox live account made on http://www.xbox.com/en-US and then you can recover that gamertag on your xbox, and redeem the code on there (I dont know if the website works for redeeming on the US/UK live, but you can try).

You can sign in with your windows live account. If you do not have a windows live account, first go create one and then go sign in at apphub.
