You know, I'm really rather single-minded about casual gaming lately, so I was interested to read this little tidbit.

Study Finds Casual Games Still Beating YouTube, MySpace

According to a new report by Parks Associates, gaming is still champion of online activities, with 34 percent of adult users playing games weekly compared to 29 percent using sites like YouTube and 19 percent using social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook.

I really think that portals like newgrounds and GGE are the way forward for indie developers, as well as innovations like browser-run GM games.

Yeah you're right, Nandrew. There should be a South African version of GGE, I think. Maybe I could ask a friend of mine (he made Zellomesh (http://www.zellomesh.com)) to help me make one...;)

No point. Just use GGE... There's no limit on location. Why would you want to artificially limit your audience like that?

Most of us here are already on GGE (and have joined the Game.Dev group, haha!)

Thanks for the link Nandrew. There seems to be a lot of focus lately (on various forums, and talking in general to people interested in making games in SA etc) on casual games being a great entry point into game development, and the fact that the stats are looking so good makes it good business too! The internet is your friend, and with the advent of tech getting more and more accessible, the skies the limit.

The great thing about casual games is the relatively fast turn around in getting a game out there, and because the focus is mostly on game-play, the the concept remains king. Quick to learn, interesting concepts drive casual games in my opinion, and that's a great challenge in anyone's book.
