Here's the timetable as it looks right now. We might still change things around according to speaker availability, but this is the plan:

Friday - 3 Oct
12:00-12:30 : How to get into the industry - Making games for a living. (dislekcia)
12:30-13:00 : Introduction to Game Maker (Aequitas, dislekcia, Nandrew)

14:00-15:00 : Workshop - Learn to design a game, hands on.

Saturday - 4 Oct
10:00-11:00 : Workshop (either a repeat of the game design one or a Code-Off challenge)

12:00-12:30 : Procedural Generation in SpaceHack (dislekcia)
12:30-13:00 : Sound Creation, tips and tricks (Nandrew)

14:00-14:30 : Shaders, point-sprites and geometry instancing in SpaceHack (Aequitas)
14:30-15:00 : Flash as a development platform, getting started and expectations (Nandrew)

16:00-16:30 : Ultimate Quest - Overview and Post-Mortem from Comp 16 to DBP (Chippit, Azimuth)
16:30-17:00 : RetroToast - year in review (Evil_Toaster)

Sunday - 5 Oct
12:00-12:30 : Luma - Busier than you could possibly imagine (Luke, Dale, Diorgo + visiting Producer from the US)
12:30-13:00 : Avonstorm - Who we are and what we're up to (Jaques?)

14:00-15:00 : Game.Dev roundtable - review of last year's targets and new goals (everyone!)

...

Right, this year's theme is two-fold:

We want to show off our locally-made games as much as possible (obviously the 360 games are a big deal, but anything else polished is good) so when the big screen isn't being used for talks I want people demoing their games to walk-in audiences. Feel free to book times at the stand itself.

We also want to bring as many new people into game development as possible. So we'll be equipped with FAQ-sheets to answer typical questions as well as ready and willing to get people into GM or designing their ideas into a boardgame at a moment's notice.

I need volunteer stand-worker names please: You guys will be bringing people to the stand and helping them when they're there. Cairnswm will be filming our talks this year and producing DVDs on demand for people that want the sessions. We're also looking at a DVD set that people can order at the show or afterwards from the Game.Dev site. Fuzzy is putting together a resource DVD that people can get at the stand, we'll be burning those as people demand them (except this time with multiple PCs), charging a nominal fee to prevent people just taking them cos they're free ;)

Squid and Edg3 are my leet PR team. They're going to have special duties.

Chippit's doing the talking.

Ok, sure thing. Maybe we could have the games running on the screen free for public play as it is well known that hands on draws attention. Also it sounds like we have a really awesome lineup talks wise.

EDIT: before it slips my mind again, is it just me or do I have to sign in to live to open any games deployed to my 360 (ie Spacehack and UQ2). I was showing them to a friend of mine that came over today and had to sign in on live and sign out of my non live profiles to open them. Is it perhaps a once off thing that has to be done? If it isnt I can see it as being a slight hassle for showing the games at rAge.

That's the plan. We want to make a lot of noise about locally built 360 games at the expo. That's part of why you're on the leet PR team ;)

Yes, you do have to sign in to Live each time you want to run a creators club game that's been deployed to your PC. Personally I'd be happier if they only checked when you started up the connect app, but I guess this is precautionary just in case people find ways of transferring the files to different 360s so they can't start selling games without authorisation.

When the community games service starts up, you'll be able to download and play games off there just like you can currently play XBLA games without being signed in... Although you do have to be signed in if you download the games on a different console, I just did my whole authorisation transfer to my new box today.

The lineup looks good :), i would like to see that code off on saturday, but is it game maker based or 'free form'?

Well last year Dis and Cairnswm did the code off and they were making desktop tower defence, Dis used Game Maker and Cairns used Delphi (SDL if I remember correctly). Although one thing that would be nice would be to get other people involved (whether outside the community or Game.Dev peoples itching to have a go) to see how easy Game Maker is.

I agree with edge . I have a few friends interested in game.dev . Maybe a codeoff between them might get them into it . @Dis how much are u planning to sell the dvds for? . The line up sounds awesome though i will only be making the saturday talks.

I can do something with C++ and sdl if we really want to get carried away :P(the more people the greater the victory).

Can I suggest emailing the FAQ sheet to the grun- er, vict- no wait, 'volunteers' before the day? I struggled to memorize all the info on the day and was too cool to stand there with the sheet in my hand while on the floor.

Also to note, for the volunteers, you are there to PROMOTE Game.Dev, not stand around the entrance hiding from the crowds :p (So no hiding under the desk and crying, Gazza_N)

Like I said, I'm still unsure about the code-off. I don't know if we'll have enough PCs... However, if you guys volunteer and can bring your own machines to code on (preferably laptops) I'll do it :)

You can use any language or tool you want, the more the merrier I reckon ;)

There was an FAQ sheet? I just winged it. >.>

I wasn't crying. I was laughing. Until I cried. ;_;

I must apologise for not charging out with a mighty shout of "I WILL HELP AGAIN THIS YEEEEEEAR!", because my attendance details are still a little up in the air at the moment. I'll definitely be at rAge, I just don't know when yet. :\

EDIT: May I add that cairnswm's DVDs are a godsend? Yes? Well then: cairnswm's DVDs are a godsend.

I'd like to know the price of the DVD since I wont be able to attend Rage this year... (Again) :(

cairnswm
01-10-2008, 09:18 PM
At the moment it will be R50 for a session video (Available about 1 hour after the session), and R200 for the whole set (after the show). This will incl Postage (I think).

These prices are subject to change based on sponsorships :)

Wonderful. Due to transport problems it seems I'll miss rAge AGAIN this year, and I absolutely hate that fact.

They'll be R20, just to prevent people who don't really want one taking them and making us waste writing time...

Could you maybe have a few dvd's of fridays "lectures"(for lack of a better word) on saturday? I'll only be there saturday and would like to get fridays lectures then.

how much extra would it cost to get the resource and the 'lecture' dvd's posted to maritzburg ?

Hey skink ,

and others.

I posted some info in the first post of the original thread :

HERE (http://forums.tidemedia.co.za/nag/showpost.php?p=149073&postcount=1)

You gave me a good idea, but i wanna find out first what it entails :)

Necrolis

Well if the code off does happen tomorrow, i can bring my rather outdated pc(14" monitor FTW :P), though i have no idea about getting it into the dome...

edg3
03-10-2008, 07:08 PM
Necrolis: bring new things in not on the first day could be hellish, so rather you could make use of my pc if you want, so you can take part in the code off (if it does happen). I would enjoy taking part, but I might have other things to take care of at the time anyway.

Also, resource DVD is R20 to cover ink and DVD costs, organise with dis or cairns at the stand.

Does anybody have basic knowledge of the Source SDK? Had a bunch of guys interested in making game and had ideas and wanted to know their options, so I took them through the routine of Game Maker and explained it's a good base for learning basics needed in using other engines and such, and explained how they could even just make it as a modification of an existing game. So just want to know if people could help with the modding part a little as my modding only falls under warcraft 3 world editor (had a bunch of guys that used it come through and convinced them we could help. Even helped them with a few issues they had in the editor).

Thanks very much for the offer edg3, i think i'll take you up on that if your not using it :)[i'll bring whatever frameworks on a usb stick if thats ok]. My modding knowledge is only on d2(but it is VERY comprehensive), so i can wing if you need winging help :P, but so far i haven't met (m)any south african modders, let alone source ones...

edg3
03-10-2008, 07:57 PM
Well you can, but that might not be necesary even :P I have a lot, including the following which Im remembering off the top of my head:
XNA game studio 2
XNA game studio 3 beta
Game Maker
Irrlicht
Somewhere I should still have a bunch of others Ive tested (like we used sphere for the time restricted competition) and I know there is an engine I have but the name is too ellusive (or is it with an i) at the moment. Also, if its on the resource dvd we'll have it there. :) im not saying you arent allowed to bring your usb or mustnt, but small things are easy to misplace.

Necrolis
03-10-2008, 08:37 PM
Hehe, well i've never fiddled with xna or gamemaker, i'm more the C++/asm/sdl/alleg/dx guy :P i've never lost those things(they actually have some 'not so happy source' on them, i can afford to), to last year the guards accused my of jacking my magic deck, lol. Can't wait for the new dvd, i still use the 06 one now and then

edg3
03-10-2008, 09:15 PM
Well then bring your flash drive and you can definitely do the code off on my pc :P any oportunity to learn is a good opportunity
