A Norwegian Company, Web & Circus, are opening a Cape Town based office
here in South Africa in January. They are assembling a team to create
game elements for their MMORPG which is built in Unity3D (which is
awesomely easy to work in if you don't already know).
They are looking to hire at least one programmer initially to be part of
this team.
Salary is negotiable.
The primary qualifications are:
> Strong background in C++ and/or C#.
> Strong 3D graphics coding experience.
> Preferably shader, AI, SQL and/or network coding experience.
> Portfolio must include minimum one 3D game or demo? with a
description of what game engine is being used and what
modifications/addons where done ? or, if the game engine is self-made ?
a brief summary of its capabilities.
If you want to know more, or pass on your portfolio, contact me at
evan@elementalstudios.co.za
Please pass this on, we need to make South African game development happen!

haha. a) isnt unity mac only? cos i downloaded the demo yesterday (relating to iphone stuff) and its a dmg file.
Sounds cool. mmorpg? i dont think i would want that as a project : MMORPG?
Is there an existing engine already built? Is there a prototype of the game yet?
Or is an mmorpg from scratch? with one programmer?
Ok, sounds like a cool opportunity. But im taken, sorry :)

This actually looks like a good job.

Unity is Mac only, but of course the company would set this up for you in their offices. You don't need to know Unity to apply, it's very easy to work with.
MMORPG is "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game". The game you would be working on is all first person in 3D (based on the Unity engine of course). I can't show you the prototype however (big non-disclosure aggreements and all that), but the job would be to program parts of the massively multiplayer online world, games within the larger game. There would be 3D artists working with you. The project I believe is to be released end of next year (there's already a team in Norway working on it)
It's truly tragic that Unity is only on Mac, it's an unbelievable piece of software (it's as easy as Flash but it makes full fledged hardware accelerated games for Windows, Mac, Wii, the internet and the iPhone)

Yea im looking into it at the moment as well, unity looks interesting.
Iv been wrestling with xcode as well, so mac isnt my choice development platform AT ALL.
I didnt say its not a good job, i was merely asking for more information.perhaps i said it in a weird way.
i dont think i would
referring to ME actually.. sorry if that was misleading.
Ok, sounds like a cool opportunity.
I see this as saying "sounds like a cool opportunity"...
Edit : I wanna make this really clear, i was seeking more info, not being a dumbass, apologies if it came out as negative. Plus i work at luma arcade full time (and love it there with large <3) so i was asking for information for any people i tell about the job.

Totally clear :) details are always good.
You're one of the lucky ones Fuzzy (at Luma), hopefully there's a few less lucky ones out there that this would be a great break for. I've been dealing with this Norwegian company allot over the last few months and they seem like great people to work with... hopefully this would be another Luma :)
It's a permanent post if anyone is wondering and the job would last at least a year (because that's when they plan to launch the MMORPG), this isn't a small venture, there's already 20-40 people working on it in Norway.
I can't say how much creative freedom there will be, but their MMORPG is modular, so you will be making several individual games to be played seamlessly in their world. As far as I understand that is.
Once again, please tell all your friends.

By the way, if you're bothered about the mac thing: if you're working in Unity3D you are not going to have to touch ANY multiplatform code or ANY hardware specific code... Unity does that all for you. When you compile your game it just works.
Like I mentioned developing in Unity3D is about as tricky as developing in Director or Flash. Plus it's less glitchy than an Adobe product.

OT: I also went to Bergvliet Primary with you. And I also ended up working in 3D.
Isn't that a strange coincidence.
I think we need to fight to the death.

Finding developers in CT is going to be tough, my best contacts would be the game development stream at UCT (I suggest going there and arranging a meeting with Ken MacGregor, head of their CS department) and these guys (http://www.tinysquishy.com) - although they've dropped off the map a bit.
Good luck, you're looking for a rather rare skillset in SA ;) Those of us that have that sort of ability tend to have learned them on the job, so getting someone between positions is going to be tricky. Hence the UCT reference.
Also, sorry I didn't reply to your PM properly earlier. It's been a hectic few weeks...

Thanks Dislekcia!
I'll try contact MacGregor then, someone fresh out of UCT might be okay. I contacted Tiny Squishy first (Chris is a friend of mine) but he couldn't help me either.
Personally I don't think 3D hardware experience is necessary for this job, just good problem solving, Unity does all the intense stuff anyway... but I'm not the employer.

Ah, that explains why it sounded so much like an international skillset. Keep us up to date on how things go.
What happened to Chris and co? They've been really scarce lately - although they've always been rather shy, even when they came up to rAge I never managed to speak to them...

I think the day-job is weighing him down... Last i saw SpineForge had gotten pretty far (which leads me to speculate that perhaps he's locked in a room somewhere with a PC and an endless supply of coffee...)

Hm... i could try find you a contact at stellenbosch if you want. I'm studying in the engineering field, so i'd have to find out who to speak to, but i could potentially help you out. jobs are always welcome to final year students, but i don't have anyone specific to recommend. let me kno

Wait. There is/was a game development track at UCT? o_O
On topic: Tempted as I might I don't have the exposure to 3D gaming at all and, er, I am in London with no plans to move to Cape Town

Yup. I evaluated it around June, next year's course should be even better :)
Also, Squid's going to be in it AFAIK.

Grr, always at the wrong place at the wrong time :p
Except being at the gameindustry career fair would be considered right place, right time :D

liquid.silver, if you do find any students who are completing their course, have some game programming skills and want a job next year that'd be brilliant.
The job at Web & Circus starts in January, it's full-time, so they'd have to be graduating now.
