I agree with the puzzle pack approach and love the idea of a pilgrim character (no special class features) to learn with.
This approach would motivate me to learn the ins and outs of deity mechanics while accomplishing a set goal in the process. I find that I will ALWAYS chose a quest/challenge over risking a grind through a dungeon I've already beaten to find a subdungeon with a god/class/witch hiding inside. It's the sense of direction I need I guess.
To sum it up, a puzzle pack would provide risk free, motivated education on an essential part of the game I've been missing out on thus far.
Surprisingly tho, I have been enjoying the HELL out of this game without utilizing the powerful resources the deities provide. :P

Fran, you've definitely raised some valid points. Reserving "deity training" for the silver (or maybe even just gold) challenges might be a solution for most of them.

And they don't necessarily have to be gods that synergize well with a particular class...the Monk with an Earth Mother altar @ Ick Swamp might be a good way to go for example, and I think it would still be challenging, depending on altar placement and such. And I don't even know what class synergizes well with gods like GG or EM. I feel like other gods synergize well with nearly every class, like JJ. But maybe that speaks more of my ignorance of the gods than anything else, idk...

I could see deity training reserved for puzzles, but I still would feel (like Darvin) that the challenge dungeons neglect the gods. And if the higher level Monk challenges end up staying as the quests were, the absence of gods would seem problematic for a lot of players regardless.

I agree. Deities should appear in both puzzles and challenges. I'm surprised how little of you use gods... They're an incredibly valuable resource that are great help for beating things that are tough for you.

@Raz: No, they are not required for Vicious (I have a faithless badge on all but one of them), but they are required for intermediate players. Us extreme veterans actually have a hard time with faithless Vicious...

Hm..
A compromise may be to have no dieties on bronze, a helpful diety on silver and a disadvantageous diety on gold, with no way to change them. With the right setting, this may even enhance your perception of the class abilities. But I still think that this is distracting, even though it's certainly better than having random dieties.

I was assuming no deities on bronze, but the disadvantageous diety on gold is an interesting idea. Contrasting the good and bad to the class abilities would be interesting indeed. Like Drac on a bloodmage, and then GG.

I would have to lean this way...
Class Challenges - explore class attributes without Deities influencing gameplay = pure Class Style education. :)
Deity Puzzle Pack - explore deity boons/penalties without Class influencing gameplay = pure Deity Style education. :)
Everything after - exploring normal/hard/vicious dungeons while employing a mix of previous educations = Extreme enjoyment. :D
The challenge/puzzle packs teach all game aspects individually, but it would be up to you to determine specific mixes of class/deity that suit best the next quest in your pursuit of total kingdom domination.
(just two cents thrown in from an 'average' player...)

That does make alot of sense. My ignorance of deity usage has prevented me from seeing past the first steps.
The silver and gold class challenges should teach you to synergise classes with deities- logically progressing the power of a given class. This would probably teach me something to help beat the vicious ones... :?
