Sorry to break the strat talk in the bragging topic, but I just won paladin gold on my third try, with a gnome, piercing wand and Bysseps. And I am just really pleased.

Incidently, I just realise that the strat there is exactly the opposite to what you were talking about ! (resist stripping instead of stacking...)

Yep, I saw the wiki afterward. Indeed, random object, such as Weywut helped a lot for navigation.

My first try was with an elf, which started wich pissorf in front of him. He was a rather badass acid-puncher, and I managed to level-up twice in the fight . But as I didn't know what to expect (damned 95% resistance...), I had scrapped bysseps a long time ago when I met the boss...

Congrats flap!

I was luckier when I first attempted this challenge. I was playing an Orc, so it made sense to keep Bysseps.

@flap: Congrats!

Paladin is definitely in the top tier of Gold challenges. I put it up there with the other killers, Warlord and Bloodmage (and Monk, although I'm not sure if Monk is actually that bad or I'm just generally bad at monks).

I think the majority of gold challenges become a lot easier if you try them with an Orc. On Warlord Gold for example I had such a bad map luck that I didn't find any altars before lvl7, and assumed it was part of the challenge. All the goat horn drops made my character so strong I didn't even notice I was dealing with bad RNG.

Orc Monk is the optimal setup so it obviously woks well.

Orc Bloodmage is not as straightforward, finding Pisorf and the easier early game is what makes it good (you create less bloodpools).

There are exceptions of course like berserker or priest gold.

It's funny that you say that. I did most of mine with Orcs (cause I love orcs), but the general feeling of this forum seems to be that Gnomes and Goblins are the favorites, so I figured I was doing it the hard way. :)

Well, checking the stat page http://www.desktopdungeons.net/stats_page/ , Paladin is apparently one of the easiest gold challenges.

Holy cow, Thief Silver. It has almost six times as many failures as the next-most-failed Silver challenge, Priest (which is another tough one IMO. I wonder if some of those stats came from before the Level 2 monsters got marked on the map.

I also notice that Fighter Bronze has a bunch of failures; I speculate that that's due to its being the "first" challenge rather than any particular greater difficulty.

As for Paladin Gold... you're right, maybe I'm just relatively shabby with Paladins. Or Earthmother.
