For me it has always been interesting how the game changes if you restrict yourself. In the early game it might always be good to prep the fine sword, but it changes the base numbers of the game. On my new playthrough I tried to not prep anything except bet on boss to get more money and I got into interesting situations a lot sooner. Den of Danger can be a real task for me with no preps, no good items in the shops and no gods unlocked. You also have to concentrate a lot more on the class abilities because you can't rely on your preps.

You can also restrict yourself in a myriad of ways. I had to do it every playthrough during testing several times as it's easy to slip into habits and then you're missing out on content and that means missing out on tools. Vet testers can remember all the situations when one badass vet though a dungeon was hard, while another thought it was easy because of playstyle.
