It's part of their class "abilities," and makes them by far the worst spellcasters in the game. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but unfortunately, I don't think their lifesteal is enough to make up for it. There are too many bosses with high phys resist and/or high attack; with zero resistance and the inability to count on more than a handful of fireballs or a couple of CYDSTEPPs, Vampires just don't seem to have any viable options for dealing with either of those scenarios. They especially suffer from the loss of Blood Power, which would have helped take the edge off of their meager magic ability, leaving their best deity with only one buff that they can actually make use of. Not having first strike also makes a surprisingly big difference.
On a marginally related note, the combat predictor is still quite inaccurate when you have lifesteal. This could well be too difficult to implement to be worth it, but I would be very happy if the yellow ticks on your HP bar would more accurately take lifesteal into account. Right now it bases its estimate of the number of hits you can take on enemy damage - lifesteal, but because lifesteal doesn't (usually) occur until after the enemy strikes, once your total HP is equal to or less than the enemy's damage, you can no longer take a hit without dying. Basically what I'm saying is right now, the combat prediction looks like this
, when it would be more accurate if it looked like this
, because in reality I can only take one hit from that snake; the second blow will kill me before my lifesteal can take effect. This makes the combat predictor a lot less useful when you're using lifesteal.
