The Badges

Postby Darvin on Tue Jan 31, 2012 8:29 pm

It occurs to me that I don't know what the 11th Badge is. I know the following:

Unstoppable (kill all monsters)
Feeling Parched (don't drink health/mana potions)
Hoarder (don't convert anything)
Warmonger (don't pick up any glyphs)
Ding! Max (reach level 10)
Purist (don't use preparations)
Miser (don't buy anything from shops)
Faithless (don't worship any deities)
Specialist (use either magic or physical damage to kill the boss, not both)
Cheeky (first monster killed is a higher level than you)

That's 10 badges, but the game says there are 11. Anyone know what it is?

As an aside, I find the "Cheeky" badge a little out of place. While all the others represent going out of your way or ignoring some of your available resources, Cheeky is often attained through normal play since fighting higher level monsters is a preferable approach.

I disagree about cheeky. I don't often have the opportunity to take out a level 2 right off the bat without sacrificing more squares than I'm comfortable with to find a suitable candidate and get enough basic power-ups to actually be able to take it out.

Then again, I might just suck as a player.

Obviously you can get unlucky and get blocked from the "cheeky" badge by the dungeon layout, but hunting down and fighting five different level 1 monsters is also pretty nasty and has an opportunity cost of bonus XP you could have gained.

Honestly I have found a lot of getting cheeky depends on class and to a large degree preps. If you take long term reward preps getting cheeky is harder without wasting resources. If your prep shot term reward preps(+2 sword, +4 sword) it is a forgone conclusion in most dungeons.

Hoarder, Parched, Warmonger, Purist, Miser, and Faithless are all badges that revolve around eschewing one of your critical resources. Ding Max and Unstoppable are indicators that you maximized your resource management and overcame the dungeon in spades (though in some dungeons Ding Max is a forgone conclusion). That leaves specialist and cheeky as the two outliers that are a bit weird, and upon reflection I think I'd treat them in the same way.

Both of these may be encompassed by completely normal play and don't represent anything more than competence in most situations. There are certainly cases (based on things like class, bosses, dungeon layout, preparations, glyph draws, etc) where these achievements are not a forgone conclusion. However, many characters will walk into the dungeon with the intention of grabbing these badges not because they represent a challenge above simple victory, but because they are themselves the path of least resistance to victory. That is the difference between these and the other badges.

(and back to original topic: does anyone know what that 11th badge is?)

I'm pretty sure someone posted that it was dying after you beat the boss, but I'd double-check that.
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

Doesn't seem to be. I tested it on Hobbler's Hold and no luck.

Nope. I'm pretty sure the 11th badge is not implemented. (Until the last update or two, you were actually scored out of 15 badges, I think.)

And I totally agree on Cheeky. I can't even remember the last time I didn't get that medal in a dungeon, it's just a basic part of optimal play. (Even on purist runs.) I mean, yeah, to a large extent that's a skill thing, but on the other hand Warmonger, Miser, Hoarder, and Faithless all require deliberately limiting yourself, as does Purist obviously, and Feeling Parched is (for me at least) more a sign that I curb stomped the dungeon than it is something I've ever had to deliberately seek out (I'm still in the habit of saving all my potions for bosses, and if I don't need them for the boss...). "Kill the boss before you hit level 7" or whatever it used to be was much more impressive, IMO, although admittedly that'd be impossible to get in the Tower or Naga City (and extremely, obtusely difficult in any of the other vicious dungeons).

"Kill a level 10 monster at level 6 or lower" or maybe "kill any monster 5+ levels higher than you" would both be decent alternatives. Ding Max and Unstoppable are kind of underwhelming, but it's not such a bad thing to have a few easy-ish achievements.
