Essentially make it pretty week until you go out of your way to convert a lot of things, encourages early exploration.
Now that Dwarves have gone back to Max Health, we can have a Steel Golem or a Frozen Troll with stacking Damage Reduction bonus for every 80/90 conversion points.
Or we could have Stheno that raises both resistances and max resistances (or simply start with 90% resistances limit). Or Stheno could have a temporary 50% resistances for every 100 points. That would be a new mechanic.
