It was short for "mobile" and it used to be pronounced "mobe" but meanings change. Now it's just any enemy really.

This change is sort of interesting. One of the fun parts of Alpha is starting out weak and actually having to jump through hoops to "break out" of your situation, even if it means doing something that isn't quite optimal like drinking a potion to kill a higher level monster (instead of saving it for the boss)

I'm honestly not sure how you reconcile that with the ability to buff yourself up the gills with preparations, really.

Then why would you ever bring preps? It makes you and the game harder (so it basically stays the same), and it costs you gold.

Also, on levels like VHoS the monster gen code is cheap. It forces my berserker to fight steel golems and illusions at level 1. And then you have to restart.
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

I wonder what it would be like if preparations only improves your POTENTIAL and not give you a massive power surge at the start of the run.

Basically items like +10% damage can stay but e.g instead of starting with a billion potions and whatever locker item you have, the preparations scatter them throughout the dungeon instead. You can gurantee yourself a Long Sword if you prepare it but you won't be frontloaded with ten billion goodies the moment you set foot in the dungeon which causes this power disparity.
