It was the monster placement algorithm change that made the dungeons more "cloggy" that broke the Grotto. If you could revert the placement algorithm back to classic beta, I think the Grotto would be fine.
Still not opposed to having a "twin" for the Grotto with a different dungeon layout and tileset.
