Well, I got some gold, so I tried a Orc Bersker, using Taurog, Compression seal, Tri Sword, Burn Salve, and Preserve Badge. Got to level 7 with a bit of struggle but not to insane. Try to kill the one with death protection... Didn't go so well. I could see the Gorgon and Half-Dragon, be gimmicky classes that while not bad are hard. But I heard that the Vampire is a average, if not above average class. I don't think that I can even really unlock anything to help, as inv. is already full. But is their any item that lets me break several layers of death protection like the trait mage sheild?

Blacksmith preparation has got Bear Mace. You have to posit the Indomitable beside another enemy, but after that you are set.

You can even scum for a Blacksmith secret subdungeon if you don't care much about kingdom gold.

I'd still say that spellcasting classes are more powerful in this dungeon. The sorcerer has the magic shield, can prep the mace, and can use the burning of burndayraz to ignite the DPs by killing lvl 1 enemies you left over. Try some runs in the hard version of the dungeon until you feel comfortable and tackle the vicious version afterwards. You can make some mistakes in the hard version and still win.
You'll have to win with 3 classes, so the sorc is on your to-do list anyway. If you can beat the dungeon with a sorc, the other mage classes are not that different.

Use Berserker with fireballs for burning and then convert it.

So I guess this leads into a question about popcorn: when exactly should I be killing popcorn? I know I can use them to get rid of curses, should I also use one after every fireball when fighting bosses with Death Protection?

In this case, yes. It would be optimal to switch between killing popcorn, hitting the boss and using burndayraz on him. This way every fireball takes down 2 DP and if you use the bear mace, every attack takes down 3 DP (attack, knockback, magic shield).
One attack and one fireball are worth 5 DP, so the DP are fading away faster than with every other class. As most of the damage is excess, you can even use some tiles to heal yourself inbetween without that being a problem as long as you manage to get him down to 0 with one hit/fireball to clear a DP. The main point about popcorn, though, is to have enough to easily reach a new level while fighting the boss, as to use the free healing of HP and mana. The healing and extra mp of the sorcerer helps in lasting even longer.
If you're adamant about using the berserker, you can use wurhgarble to have a similiar burning effect as burndayraz on hit, also helping you lowering the DP by killing popcorn (even without the need of positioning the enemy).

As for preps, I'd suggest either an amulet of yendor (which helps you lvl up fast at the beginning - I find this a very good prep for inexperienced players as it basically gives you alot room for errors in the early game, if you're having trouble with that or an full heal during the boss fight) or the platemail, which is best in an endurance fight against a low damage boss.

In other boss fights, igniting the burning is generally a bad idea. The damage dealt is low and the burning effect increases every damage you do to a boss (it works like a temporary corrosion), so there is not much incentive to lose it.
Also, it hinders the enemies regeneration which helps your regen fighting alot.

Use Platemail, bring a steal scroll and prep elites. Look around till you find The Amulet. LEMISI will help considerably. You can afford yo wast space as you'll immediately be level 5.

Just got a great easy win in VHoS. This strategy is GREAT. I got Warmonger, Feeling Parched, and specialist. Prep Platemail, Extra Gold, Taurog, Fewer Glyphs, Slayer Wand, Elite Items, Health, Mana, Reflex, Whupaz, Salve, and Translocation Seal. Take Taurog immediately. Get the sword, then the shied, then the helm, and last the armor. Whenever you convert a glyph, convert a mana potion for 2 conversion levels. Fight The Indomitable at level 6 and almost level 7 for a mid-fight level up. You want at least a third of the map left covered. Regen fight and mid-fight level up your way till the Indomitable is about half down. Throw down your prepped salve. Finish the fight. Buy another salve and throw it down. Take a DP from Taurog ASAP, but don't use it. If you can convert off into Drac vs BlahBlah it'll be super easy. Basically just use the rest of your resources on BlahBlah (including Whupaz).

Fun fact, Socco Trolls dungeon in DI can be handled at level 1 with a vampire with Platemail.

Fun fact 2, it was only after solving it that I realised this might be a source of infinite healing....

Vampire on DI was way easier than I'd expected - Parched, Unstoppable, Faithless, Warmonger... the works really.
New less-glyphs is very good with vampire. With Dwarven Gauntlets and early Socco Troll stuff, the dungeon above wasn't too rough. The Mana Burn guards and Firstborn are the only real threats, once you're past those, Matron can be nibbled to death.

Anyway, fun romp there, now to locker the Dragon Shield and try for half-dragon... shudder...

Care to enlighten us on which race/class you used?
I can calculate that your conversion value was 80, so i guess you were an orc berserker?
