What does "Burning" do, exactly?

I probably would have never beaten the last Mystera puzzle until I read a post from someone (Darvin?) explaining that attacking the level 1 triggers the burning charge. I assumed it did the indicated damage per "turn" (meaning any attack or revealing of tiles). Does it trigger the indicated damage only upon attacking something other than the burning target?

Also, what use is the Wharrgarbl?

Burning adds X damage more to each Fireball attack where X is the number of stacks.

e.g Your fireballs will do 1,2,3,4,5 more...

Second, if you attack someone else other than your current Burning target, the old target will have their stacks "detonate" for X damage.

This also happens if you attack your current target with a physical attack. Whhhbegrl use is that it counts your normal attacks as a "fireball" and it'll raise the stacks instead of depleting it.

Third, burning reduces regeneration by 1 (not sure on the number)

Burning actually seems kind of overloaded to me and I don't think it's very easy to figure it out actually in-game too. I mean, power level wise, it's okay, but rules and design wise... eww.

So burning does reduce regeneration? In that case it should theoretically be very good for monks?

Burning is a stacking debuff that reduces the regeneration rate of a monster while it applies.

When burning is 'further stacked or removed it does magic damage equal to the number of stacks of burning.

Stacks of burning are limited based on your level. ( I think its LVL squared? not sure)

Burning is removed in a similar way to poison:

Attacking the monster with a physical attack
Attacking another monster with a physical or magical attack.

Attacking a monster with BURNDARAYZ or Whurrgarbl applies another layer of burning, and the extra points of magical damage is appled to each one.

Ie.

BURNDARAYZ: 6 damage
Second BURNDARAYZ + 1 point of burning: 7 damage
Third BURNDARAYZ + 2 points of burning: 8 damage

Thus it is good idea to cast fireballs consecutively, to maximise damage from burning. It is also possible to apply burning to a monster then explore, fully regenerating yourself and the monster. The next set of fireballs will do more damage, allowing you to 'regen fight' effectively with magic damage.

It is also handy when fighting enemies with death protection, as the small amount of burning damage can be triggered by attacking another monster.

BURNDARAYZ and Whurrgarbl is a potent comination, becasue it allows you to attack without losing your stacks of burning.

Well, I guess that the primal of the two damaging spells (don't qoute me, but I think pisorf and burn) is conplex.
Also, so I guess Whurrgarbl is very good on a Sorc, as it lets you chain together attack, spell, attack.

Whurrgaburgl is great for Sorcerers. You can stack levelx2.

I've never been able to get Burning to kill anything. I'm pretty sure I've gotten enemies down to 1HP, still burning, attacked something else and the first enemy didn't die. I could have screwed up but this has happened a few times as I recall...

Whurrgarbl and Martyr Wraps together are wickedly good for any brawler-type fighter like the Monk, Gorgon, Sorcerer, Paladin, etc.

Esepcially if they have low damage. Then it's SUPER powerful.
