Essential Unlocks

Postby squirrelnest on Thu Aug 02, 2012 11:47 pm

All right DD players: this thread, should you choose to participate in it, is a place to list a few of the unlockable items you consider most important. The mighty strength potion led me to make this thread. Now that I can prep it, I'm sometimes killing a level 3 monster at level 1, which is a wonderful start for any map. What are a few items that have changed your play so dramatically that you shudder to imagine life without them?

While I have not progressed through all of the unlocks, and as such my list might look quite silly, my top 3 are as follows:
-Strength Potion
-Crystal Ball
-Compression Seal

Martyr Wraps (best by a long margin)
Strength and reflex potions
Platemail

Also find slayer wand gets you a lot of bang for your buck, more and more on increasingly hard dungeons

Hm, I think Platemail is very solid (maybe just me playing Vampire a lot). Agree about Str Potion (personally prefer it to the other two) - I got a level 4 minotaur in magma mines as my first kill on my last run (Orc Rogue with some conversions and the taurog sword).

Seems most of the important ones have been mentioned, but I will add this:

If you're playing an elf, you must have the Schadenfreude potion at our disposal.

You can't chain crystal ball activations one after another in rapid succession. Ideally you want to use your crystal ball, follow up with two schadenfreudes and your other potions, then use your newly-charged crystal ball again for a massive damage spike.

Hasn't been menitioned:

Gloves of Midas
Tri-Sword
Dragonshield (this thing breaks the "vicious stuff is optional", I'd personally remove it from the game or make it elite)

Has been mentioned:

All potions asap (changes the game the most)
Platemail
Martyr Wraps (most powerfull item in the game ATM)

A look through my "assorted random thoughts thread" might yield more.
I almost got pwned by Shifty Brickwork!

Thing about the Dragonshield is that outside of vicious scenarios the platemail is usually the better item (or at very least close enough for all intents and purposes). The item only really comes into its own once you start doing vicious dungeon runs, which is when you'll unlock it.

I don't think the Trisword is as venerable as it once was. Still a great item, but you can clear the game handily without ever touching it. Gloves of Midas, though, is a superb item to have populated in your shops.

The most all around useful for me would be
Devout(GG and Taurog)
Compression seal(Also GG and Taurog)
Crytal Ball and Platemail are also nice.
And how do I get martyr wraps? Is it the Monks silver? If so, I have not done Monk bronze let.
