The Crusader was a lot weaker back then. He only had immunity to the first ailment he encountered in a given dungeon. Since we didn't have Curse back then, that meant mana burn, or poison if you got a really unlucky spawn. The Vampire has changed so many times and so radically that I don't even remember his old powers, other than that he was uselessly weak for the first several iterations.

I'm pretty sure the matron had 112 damage, but maybe that was v 2.0.

I think the matrons hp or damage should be buffed to thier original stats (1400 something and 112 respectively).
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

Or maybe even just buff her minions instead. Sort of one of those "my true power is the unity I bring to my kind" bosses - which kind of ties in with the quest text. Besides, it'd be a nice change of pace to have a level where it's not the boss who's obscene, it's their minions. I like the current vampire; very strong, but only if you learn to play it in a totally different way than you usually play. Trying to decide how else I want to tackle NC. I think Priest will be involved somewhere. That and Bloodmage tend to have the most staying power. Undead are fairly rare there, too, so Dracul will work nicely. Means Paladin is probably good as well.

(Side note: Isn't Monk in VHoS pretty much suicide?)

Yeah, playing NC I make it to the last 3/last boss every time, I just sometimes run out of steam there. There's only four "real" bosses to me; the wraith, goo, bandit, and final bosses. The first two demand a lot of mana, the third sets up Curse, and so far resists have been my strategy on getting through NC. The last guy is just plain annoying.

I dunno, the original Matron of Flame sounds a tad ridonk, but it'd be nice to have something special for dragons. Hmmm. Maybe a Miser kind of level? Set Matron's damage to something ridiculous like 150+, but let the amount of gold you're carrying act like a shield? Make you act like a dragon to win. Ties in nicely with the "not taking a trophy at the end" message.

EDIT: So close, yet so far.

Side note: Something to maybe patch in post-release; Hall of Records. For stuff like this, except for all the stats the game keeps track of.

I do think it would be appropriate to bump at least a few of the Matron's guards to level 10, even if their stats remain mostly the same - that level has always been far too easy (relatively speaking) for Assassins to walk over. (Granted, Assassins can cut a swathe through all of the vicious dungeons except the Tower.) A slight buff to the Matron and a slight buff to her guards would be appropriate since Dragon Isles really is an outlier on the lower end of the vicious category.

As long as we're talking about tinkering with the vicious dungeons, I do think the Library could still stand to be weakened a tad (that, or every other vicious dungeon except the Tower and possibly VHoS needs a significant buff). Reducing the sub-bosses to 333 HP each would be my suggestion...

On the topic of Naga City strategies, that dungeon's secret weak spot is actually BURNDAYRAZ spam. Take a Gnome Wizard, prep the Crystal Ball and more glyphs (save them for Refreshment), don't bother with any of the church preps and just worship Mystera as soon as you reach the arena for instant 100 piety. As a WIzard you don't need Mystic Balance, so take Flames, +MP, and Refreshment, then save the rest of your piety for Weakening the Iron Man and the boss. Easiest way to get the Specialist badge, IMO. (Purist, too, for that matter, if you scum for a Crystal Ball shop and/or BLUDTOPOWA.) You can do much the same with an Assassin, taking Mystic Balance instead of Refreshment (since you're converting most of your glyphs on the surface, I'd go with an Elf and take fewer glyphs), and a last-minute conversion into Earthmother for Plantation/Clearance.

Always very interesting to me to hear others' takes.

I'd rank the vicious in their current form (easiest to hardest):

Naga City
(big gap)
VHoS
DI
Namtar
DL
Tower
