Dungeon of the Day - 1

Postby Darvin on Wed Dec 05, 2012 11:27 pm

We'll be trying a little DD game over the next few days called the Dungeon of the Day Scoring Challenge. If it's successful, this might become a regular "play-by-forum" activity around here. Any players are welcome to participate, regardless of whether you're a veteran or beginner. Even if you're new to Desktop Dungeons and can only manage one or two medals, feel free to post your experiences here. The rules are as follows:

At 8:00 PM Pacific time (4:00 AM GMT, about 4 hours 40 minutes from now), I will roll a 12-sided die in order to select a dungeon at random from the following list of directional dungeons:

Rock Garden (1), Creeplight Ruins (2), Hexx Ruins (3), Havensdale Bridge (4), Cursed Oasis (5), Berserker Camp (6), Slime Pit (7), Magma Mines (8), Shifting Passages (9), Hard Halls of Steel (10), Ick Swamp (11), or Labyrinth (12)

I will immediately post my roll, which will open the competition. Any DD player can then submit a screenshot showing a successful run. You can use any race or class you want; so long as you win the dungeon run it's eligible for the contest. Points are awarded based on which medals you win, based on the scoring below:

Warmonger and Hoarder = 5 points each
Purist = 4 points
Faithless, Unstoppable, Parched and Miser = 3 points each
Ding! Max = 2 points
Specialist and Cheeky = 1 point each

Tie scores will be resolved by how long it took you to beat the dungeon, with the faster time winning.

The contest ends once the devs release their Friday update (so we don't run across more than one game version), and the highest-scoring user at the time is declared the winner. If the devs skip the Friday update for whatever reason, the contest will close instead at 8:00 PM Pacific time, 48 hours after it began. Users may submit as many entries as they like, but only the highest-scoring will be counted.

And the die has been cast! It is #5: Cursed Oasis

You have 48 hours or until the next developer update (whichever comes first) to submit your run. Please leave a screenshot of your scorescreen.

First try, baby!

Image

Parched (3)
Hoarder (5)
Miser (3)
Purist (4)
Cheeky (1)
Ding! Max (2)
Specialist (1)
Unstoppable (3)
= 22 points

(missing badges are Faithless and Warmonger)
14:19 for time (in the case of a tie)

Glyphs used were APHEELSIK (duh), WONAFYT (regretted picking it up), BURNDAYRAZ, IMAWAL, and GETINDARE (found towards the end; first time I used it was against the level 8 thrall). I actually found IMAWAL before the Earthmother, so I had a duplicate glyph on the ground. The unused glyph was WEYTWUT, which was found once exploration was mostly over and it was functionally useless.

I ran Earthmother -> Dracul, using vine form to bolster my HP for the eventual blood tithe on the other end. I converted to Dracul just before fighting the Shade boss in curse-world. IMAWAL's curse removal proved detrimental, as I actually had to intentionally rack up curse-layers to stay in curse world to clear out the shades (needed their blood pools and once the shade boss died I wouldn't be able to harvest them, and post-conversion kills would hurt my piety with Dracul). I used blood curse to reach level 10 during my boss fight with the dragon. I ended up desecrating Earthmother during the final battle in order to avoid piety loss from killing the thralls, and then and (surprisingly) Glowing Guardian also got desecrated. At the very end I just needed 20 more piety for a final bloodswell to pull off my win, and knocked out GG's altar to do it.

You can go to curse world after you kill the shade boss and before you pick up the symbol.
Great idea on the challenge, it could be fun randomising the class/race too.

Ouch. I can't stand that dungeon. I think I might be able to tack a faithless on in addition to your other badges. Maybe Warmonger instead...

It's too bad these posts come out at like 11:00 for me. I'll always have a time disadvantage.
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

You've got all day tomorrow. Should be plenty of time to make a few good attempts. This isn't VGT we're talking about. Next time you can "host" this and choose the time the contest starts.

The thing is that without Dracul I wouldn't have hit level 10, even with IMAWAL, so if you go for either Warmonger or Faithless you'll probably end up losing Ding! Max. That'll still let you beat me, but you couldn't afford to drop any other medals in the process.

Yes it does; that was changed some time ago, so now Dracul is a great way to nab that badge. Personally I prepare a JJ prep for a Ding! Max PQI, but of course in this case I wasn't prepping anything.

Anyways, it's 11:40 here and I've got to get up at 6:30, so g'night.
