Dungeon of the Day - Master Thread

So, over the last week we've been running a fun play-by-forum game called "Dungeon of the Day". In this game, we lay out some rules and specify a specific dungeon and class restriction, and players can then submit their best runs. Scoring is determined by which medals you earn. Different medals score different numbers of points. We're still fine-tuning how much each medal is worth, and you should always check the individual Dungeon of the Day thread for details. We will likely be moving to a weekly format starting with DotD #4, meaning "Dungeon of the Day" will be a bit of a misnomer.

This will be the official rules and discussion thread. I will also include links to the current and past contests. Hopefully this will clean up the main contest threads for direct discussion regarding the runs and score submissions rather than rules discussions.

Dungeon of the Day #5 is currently pending. Stay tuned for details.

The current medal scoring rules are as follows:

Warmonger = 5 points
Faithless, Hoarder, Purist = 4 points each
Unstoppable, Parched and Miser = 3 points each
Ding! Max = 2 points
Specialist and Cheeky = 1 point each

Furthermore, some classes are worth addition points:

+0 classes: Rogue, Berserker, Assassin
+1 classes: Warlord, Monk
+2 classes: Bloodmage, Paladin
+3 classes: Sorcerer, Fighter, Vampire, Gorgon, Tinker, Transmuter
+4 classes: Priest, Half-Dragon, Crusader, Thief
+5 classes: Wizard

Past contests are recounted here:

Dungeon of the Day #4 took place in Shifting Passages and allowed the Rogue, the Crusader, and the Priest
Winner: q3 (Halfling Priest - 23 points)
Runners Up: Darvin (Halfling Crusader - 22 points), gjaustin (Halfling Priest - 21 points)

Dungeon of the Day #3 took place in Rock Garden and allowed the Berserker, the Wizard, or the Transmuter.
Scores were divided into the Berserker division and the non-Berserker division.
Berserker Division Winner: The Avatar (Gnome Berserker - 27 points / 4:18)
Berserker Division Runners Up: Darvin (27 points / 5:23), gjaustin (19 points)

Non-Berserker Division Winner: Darvin (Goblin Wizard - 21 points)
Non-Berserker Division Runners Up: q3 (Elf Transmuter - 14 points), Dreamdancer (Orc Transmuter - 13 points)

Dungeon of the Day #2 took place in the Berserker Camp and allowed the Priest, the Monk, or the Paladin.
Winner: Darvin (Elf Paladin - 25 points)
Runners Up: The Avatar (21 points), Sidestepper (17 points)

Dungeon of the Day #1 took place in the Cursed Oasis and allowed players to select any class.
Winner: Darvin (Goblin Assassin - 22 points)
Runners Up: The Avatar (13 points), Nurator (7 points)

I also vote to make this topic sticky. It would make more people to contribute, which would be nice.

A possible solution for classes being stronger than each other would be for everyone to submit a list ranking the classes. Then we average them all together and use them to determine a "handicap" for each class.

We'd probably want to group the classes into groups of 3. So we'd end up with something like the following (Disclaimer - I haven't played much recently so I may be wildly wrong about some classes)

No Bonus
Rogue
Assassin
Berserker

+2 Bonus
Monk
Paladin
Warlord

+4 Bonus
Bloodmage
Vampire
Half-Dragon

+6 Bonus
Sorcerer
Gorgon
Priest

+8 Bonus
Thief
Wizard
Fighter

+10 Bonus
Crusader
Tinkerer
Transmuter

I agree that handicap is the right way to go. More or less agree with your "no-bonus" list; all of these guys are superb medal-hunters. Even if other classes may be (strictly speaking) stronger, these guys are better at scoring high. I don't think it's possible to "group into threes" as you do, since the mid-range classes tend to be quite equitable.

Now, I think your handicap ramps up much too steeply. I'd be hesitant to award more than a +1 handicap for Monk, Paladin, or Warlord. Bloodmage I'd put in the 2-3 range. The monster classes, priest, sorcerer, tinker and fighter belong in the 3-4 range. Thief and Wizard would be +5, and I wouldn't even consider creating a higher handicap than that. Not sure on Crusader and Transmuter; I've never really evaluated their suitability to medal-hunting so I don't want to rush to conclusions.

I'm also wondering what to do for dungeons. I feel that the time has come for one of the pre-vicious scenarios (Shifting Passages, Labyrinth, Ick Swamp, or Halls of Steel) to rear its ugly head, but that could be intimidating or disqualifying for some players. Thoughts on the matter?

The pre-vicious dungeons would be ok for me. For Hall of Steel this would have for me the advantage that i'll (hopefully) unlock the vicious version :)

They're rather rough, I have to say. Since i've got quests in them anyway, chances are good at least some beneficial overlap will happen ^^. As for me I've unlocked 3 of them and doing Creeplight for the final one is next on my agenda, so if they're what we're doing I'm game I'm fine. Ive also unlocked all tier 2, tinker and the crusader.

Okay, so I think we'll randomly pick from one of the four pre-vicious, and three random non-monster classes (Berserker, Wizard, and Transmuter taken off of rotation so we get three different classes).

I'm going to suggest the following handicaps:

+0 classes: Rogue, Berserker, Assassin
+1 classes: Warlord, Monk
+2 classes: Bloodmage, Paladin
+3 classes: Sorcerer, Fighter, Vampire, Gorgon, Tinker, Transmuter
+4 classes: Priest, Half-Dragon, Crusader, Thief
+5 classes: Wizard

These will be the dice rolls for determining round #4:

Dungeon - roll 1d4: Halls of Steel (1), Ick Swamp (2), Labyrinth (3), Shifting Passages (4)
Classes - roll 1d12: Fighter (1), Warlord (2), Thief (3), Rogue (4), Assassin (5), Priest (6), Monk (7), Paladin (8), Sorcerer (9), Bloodmage (10), Tinker (11), Crusader (12)

Contest will run from Friday the 14th until Thursday the 20th. I'd like the thread to be up and running this Thursday and the contest launched immediately after the developers do their news post. I will not be available at that time, so someone else will need to play "host" for round #4. Any volunteers?

Those scores work for me.

My list was more based on ranking the classes in general, but weighting certain classes a little lower due to being locked out of certain badges (e.g. Wizard and Warmonger, Priest and Feeling Parched) helps.
