freeware version - rogue class

I couldn't see if this has been talked about or not in the forums.

In the freeware version, the rogue class has "first strike".
If I read and understood well, that means the attck of the rogue is resolved BEFORE any attack of his opponent, unless the opponent has first strike, too.
So when playing a rogue character, the game makes me asking myself if those monsters have first strike :
the goat
the wraith
the meat man
the warlock
the zombie
the serpent
Very often, when facing those monsters (whatever their level or my rogue's), the result is death for my character, even if i score damage far higher than their remaining HP.

I'm getting really confused and it really lowers the fun I have playing the game.

None of those monsters have first strike. IIRC every monster that has first strike (mainly goblins and gorgons) has it listed in their description. Are you sure you're actually dealing enough damage to kill the monster in one hit? Could you post a screenshot?

One thing to keep in mind is that the way damage is calculated in DD is kind of unintuitive - you have a "base damage" (which is usually 5 per level, plus any bonuses you have from items or being an Orc) and a "bonus damage" (which is a percentage). Anything that increases the percent damage you deal actually only increases your "bonus damage" percent. So, for example, if you have 10 base damage and your bonus damage is 70%, your normal damage rating will be 17. If you then get an effect that says "+100% damage", your damage won't go up to 34 (17 + 100% of 17), but rather will only go up to 27 (10 * 170% bonus damage).

I think wraith has physical damage reduction as well.
