Gold carried refers to hard currency that your adventurer had on his/her person. So, your adventurer had 16 gp of trophies but no cash in his pocket.

Keep in mind that your starting cash is deducted from your "winnings". So if you enter the dungeon with 25 gold and your wallet had 30 gold at the end, you walk out with 5 gold.
