Who is using the Trisword?

Postby Sidestepper on Fri Apr 26, 2013 9:33 am

I've had some success with it, but that was in a best case scenario of a Halfling Priest fighting mostly undead monsters in Cursed Oasis and using a health potion once per battle. Even then, the advantage over the Fine Sword felt marginal. I definitely do not want the old Trisword back, but this one seems awfully circumstantial.

I wouldn't mind having it able to gain a +1 dmg every time you drink a health/mana potion (with the current effect remaining). After 7 potions it'd be permanently charged - not worth dumping your potion, but would outgrow the fine sword with use (and encourage potion spiking non boss enemies).

Definitely tough to use now; it's a borderline locker-worthy item, but overall I'd say the fine sword is the better of the two. I'd agree with Lujo on this one.

Agreed. It's not even that great for potion spiking, as you don't get the full 5 attacks of boosted damage. I'm pretty sure of you locker it boosted it starts boosted. A fun Easter egg.

I never locker it anymore, but pick it up all the time in-dungeon. If you ask me, that's an indicator of a WAY better item.

People probably think they 'never' use it, but only in comparison to the fact that it used to be a no-brainer prep for almost every run.I would say that general use is down compared to other items, but only because everyone is suddenly realising how awesome other items are becasue they actually bother to prep them now.

Great for berserkers, rogues and priests. Grerat for specialist classes who wouldn't utilise either their health or mana potions anyway. Stacks with tikki too.

Using it I've gotten into the habit of quaffing two or three potions to tackle two or three levels above me, which means more popcorn in the end. WAY better than the boring attack stack it used to be.

I think the devs stated they wanted the trisword to promote potion use during the game, as opposed to a boss spike. The old one just meant you quaffed them at the start of the game, this iteration is a perfect balance.

I don't know. I actually don't really buy it (unless it's the only buyable damage booster). The mandatory loss of one damage hurts against popcorn.

Well, I'm with Bloggorus - he's right. Plus the "locker charged - start out with charged" thingy is dandy :D Probably unintentinal though (there's might be 5 different items and charges cycle through them, so you do in fact locker a charged trisword). Thanx for that tip :)

It's pickupable and the damage it provides is nice. I'm glad it's not auto-locker anymore - one less thing to feel like I have to keep lockered. Unlockering it and picking it up occasionaly opened up space for experiments (even though it's been replaced with a sensation stone I'm gonna keep handy).

Also, it pulled me through the transmuter gold challenge - the potions aren't very usefull there and are probably best used to potion spike enemies anyway, so it's quite a godsend. It also gives a poised-to-spike human transmuter a nice damage boost when not relying on spirit sword.

If the Trisword begins fully-charged, that probably is good enough. I say the devs should just make that the default behavior of the item (regardless of whether it is lockered in the charged state or not) and leave it at that.

I guess what I'm really getting at is

1) How often would you buy/prep the Trisword versus the already existing Fine Sword?
and
2) Do you feel that the Trisword is worth having in your shop pool?

My personal answer is 'very rarely' for 1) and 'yes' for 2), but only because the Trisword is a slightly watered down Fine Sword. If I could replace the Trisword in my pool with a second copy of the Fine Sword, I'd go for that instead. The only real stand out advantage of the Trisword is that it has a better conversion/gold ratio (3:1, which is considered good without being great).

So my question isn't really "Is the Triswrod good?" because any item that grants non-trivial base damage is going to be good, but rather, "Is the Trisword competitive with existing methods of boosting base damage?"

If it was bought and locker end precharged then yes. Otherwise, no. The fine sword is nice, and probably better without the early boost.
