Desktop Dungeons videos with strategy discussion

Postby lorgon111 on Fri Nov 15, 2013 5:54 am

I've decided to take a stab at a "Let's Play" video series of this game, with a focus on teaching the game mechanics and discussing strategy as I play through the dungeons. If you're new to the game, perhaps you'll learn some useful tips; if you're a seasoned veteran, perhaps you can give me some :) Any feedback on the commentary style I've chosen is appreciated as well.

Great introductory video. Between you and Schatcher it seems I won't be the only Let's Player on the board any more. Aside from the videos how far have you gone into the game?

I haven't gotten very far; maybe about 10 dungeons completed in my off-camera 'testing' kingdom? I played a lot way back in the web alpha, but then only started playing again with the steam release... have not even unlocked any gods, as far as I know. :) I do really like the progression changes now, both the tutorial dungeon introductions and the kingdom grinding that slowly unlocks the game. My vague memories of the alpha from 1.5 years ago was being thrown into a deeply complex game and spending a lot of time trying to infer mechanics and strategies; now the game still preserves a lot of the puzzle difficulty, but does so with a nicer learning curve that makes it less frustrating and more accessible.

Well this board is full of knowledgeable, and friendly people who have literally 100%ed the game if you need any tips. For me there is still one dungeon I haven't beaten as well as several class challenges.
Hey if you and/or Schatcher wanna figure out a way to do some sort of collaborative video that would be cool. Maybe like multiple perspectives on how to approach the same run or something. I think it would be cool to show people that there is often more than one solution to a problem.

I didn't really have a plan for it. I just thought since there were three of us it might be cool to do something together like that. There are a number of ways we could do it. For instance we could all try: Purist + Warmonger in the Hex Ruins. That way we would all have very different approaches probably using different classes to achieve the same goal. Or we could all try Fighter in the rock garden + get hoarder/miser/faithless. That run would be all about how we prepped + needing that high lvl of play to win. I'm honestly not sure if I could succeed on either of those runs, but it would be fun to try.
I still have my fully open kingdom so I can do runs pretty much anywhere. If lorgon111 wants in we may want to start with earlier dungeons though until he opens his up a bit more.

Hmm... If you're doing that I advise against warmonger. I'd say the most interesting badge combo that produces many strats is Purist+Miser, any class/race combo of your choice.
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

purist-miser sounds like a great option. Takes out a bit of the randomness, still leaves in the fun with glyphs.

Just catching up - yeah, it would be fun to do some kind of collab or competition, but yes, I'm still not very far along in terms of what is unlocked. Is there any way to get non-random dungeons (tutorial/puzzle levels maybe)? Or else, as suggested, I guess just specific runs of a particular dungeon, with the same class/race/equipment... or could do with different class/race/equipment... with the randomness of dungeons I am not clear if it would be fun to 'compete', and I'm not sure what the goals of that might be (most money? fastest win? ...) just trying to brainstorm what might be most interesting for viewers to make them want to watch multiple perspectives...

Generally, us long term DD players have determined badges are the best way to score a run. Our scoring system was something like this:

5pt Badges: Hoarder, Warmonger
4pt Badges: Purist, Faithless
3pt Badges: Miser, Feeling Parched, Unstoppable
2pt Badges: Specialist, Ding Max
1pt: Cheeky

Vicious shouldn't matter for your competition.
