Choongmyoung's diary of VGT runs

Postby choongmyoung on Mon Oct 03, 2016 4:00 pm

Saw a diary on this forum and thought it's cool. As with only VGT left, I think I can at least try them.
Comments are well appreciated! I hope to get some intuitions or be more skillful from your advices.

Beginning with berserker win:

I thought, with that much starting resist I can regen fight with the first L8 monster. So, to conserve more blackspaces, I decided to start with Yendor. Also I'm skipping the whole low-level phase, so I went with human. Human is a bit stronger at L10.

So here is my initial completion:

FIGHTER BERSERKER WARLORD TRANSMUTER VAMPIRE
THIEF ROGUE ASSASSIN CRUSADER HALF-DRAGON
PRIEST MONK PALADIN TINKER GORGON
WIZARD SORCERER BLOODMAGE CHEMIST RAT-MONARCH
GOATPERSON

CHEEKY FAITHLESS DING!MAX HOADER MISER
PARCHED PURIST SPECIALIST UNSTOPPABLE WARMONGER

I think the two non-standard preps you picked were Yendor and Black Market... Most people usually go with Dragon Shield and Patches on most builds, because it can reasonably get you to 53%-65% resists without Body Pact, which in turns help with late-game Piety and more stacks of Blood Tithe. I also normally see pre-Dracul Consensus as a bit of an unhappy trade-off, I mean it's doable if you need it, but I find that it's better to keep Consensus for the end to allow you some leeway in the Horatio fight.

My dream scenario was Taurog -> GG (not taking any Protections, just Humility) -> Dracul, then desecrate Earthmother and quaff the Burn Salve, and still have Consensus up your sleeve in case you need that extra last bit of help - for example, by swapping back into GG after all blood pools are gone for a handful of Protections.

Then again, I think it's pretty cool that you picked non-standard preps! :D

Yendor is hard for non-berserker and monk I guess? I didn't want to waste my magic resistances over maximum. Blood shield will solely carry the maximum resist. However I think the Tower shield did a perfect job, and probably Dragon shield should be better.
Also I don't like patches curse part, poison and mana burn are terrible without immunities. In addition I seldom carry the patches over L9 or L10 because of the inventory space problem.

BTW, prior to the VGT trials I unlocked the last veto slot and filled with VGT specific bans. These items are the topmost quest items lf the shop generation pools: Battlemage Ring, Balanced Dagger, Trisword, Fire Heart, Hero's Helm, Blue Bead, Mage Plate.
I skipped to veto these, which are better chance to spawn than those above: Venom Dagger, Whurrgarbl, Vampiric Blade, Platemail, Martyr Wraps, Agnostic's Collar, Stone Sigil, Gloves of Midas. Then I go with quest items prep.

Most of the monsters - including Horatio himself - deal Physical damage. Which is why the Berserker is at a much smaller advantage thanks to its Magic Resist... Whereas a class like the Paladin or Monk which gives you Physical Resists is much easier.

When thinking about how will I hoard all those needed resists, I only think about Physical Resist for VGT. MR can help (and you can get screwed by a late-tower Warlock thanks to his insane damage), but you'll have 80%+ of the monsters deal physical, so that's what really counts...

I wouldn't necessarily veto all of the items you wrote; Blue Bead in particular is a very good item to find. For 5 GP you can get dozens of mana refill. Also, Balanced Dagger can give you an additional refill in the endgame, thanks to all that XP piling up, though it's not as straightforward as the Bead because it does not help most builds that much early on.

My only glyph: CYDSTEPP. No BURNDAYRAZ, no HALPMEH, no GETINDARE. Most of the monsters were two-hit before tower 8, which can be defeated within 10 blackspaces (effectively 9 with Blue Bead).
I didn't want to convert to Dracul obviously. So I went with body pact ~tower 4. (PM was tower 1) Buying Stone Sigil and using only 1-2 CYDSTEPPs per monster, even with body pact, the piety was increasing under Taurog. That isn't possible with HALPMEH I guess? I converted to Dracul after tower 9.
Converted everything to get 187 attack plus determined +30% bonus damage plus Martyr Wraps plus one remaining mana potion (just for resistance erode effect, I didn't have any glyph then) plus WHUPAZ plus 3 Blood Tithe and well done.

And Tinker, thank you for the Blue Bead. ;)

It's so fun to see how the tower being easier and easier each time, especially when teddy gives the resists.
I'm not so great at leveling the Vampire with VT, so Yendor. And 7-9 blood cows rocks. Yup.
One of my mistake is taking a compression seal. Transmutation or translocation seal would be much better I guess.
Btw, only a single meat man? Are you serious, RNG?

Now that was unorthodox... I did do a Dragon Shield-less Vampire+VT, but it was with Platemail. Though you did find it, so I guess you had your cake and ate it, so to speak...

Though Vampire doesn't need that much blackspace, I mean it's nice to be able to heal the blood cows a bit, but your new tower kind of takes care of that. Which is why I don't really see the value of Yendor so much as in the case of some other, more blackspace-dependent classes.

On a Vamp, yeah, probably, though Compression seal is universally good because you anyway have lots of nice stuff to pick up.

Now, I'm really looking forward to seeing a couple of badges, I'm not saying the rest are not interesting, but there are 3-4 badges for everyone that are a bit more difficult than the rest... ;) (not always the same for everyone, so I don't want to write down what were most difficult for me, because maybe they won't be for you...)

Yeah, so true. The run was only possible thanks to that Platemail. Though I imagine how the life would be easier if I had Platemail+Dragon Sheild.

But instead, see that I effectively didn't kill anybody above L4? Because more bloodcows = great. Yendor made it possible I believe.

For me, for most dungeons, the hardest ones were warmonger or hoader. Man these were annoying! However I do see VGT is a bit different from the others... I'll just try them and see what badges appear more difficult to me.

I'm nominating myself to the VGT olympics, so here's the final blow to H.
Spoiler: show
Image

Very very very easy. I didn't expect the Platemail + Vampiric Blade. That's a walk in the park to my monk. I had plenty of the blackspaces left, I think I could win even if the H had 20,000 hit points instead of 5,000. Even with the blackspace reveal in the Binlor floor.
Darn why did I take sanguine? That would be an super easy sanguine-free win!

The monk is one of the best classes at VGT I guess. Not much to comment.
