Here's an idea for troll hearts. Instead of greatly increasing how much health they offer, what if they added +1 to health recovery from exploration, and this worked even while poisoned. That way they'd be a nice boost for any character, and a (inferior) backup plan for poisonous enemies if you can't get viper ward. They could still also give +1 or maybe +2 health per level.
