Really? That stinks. I guess Dragon Shield or the lifesteal blade.
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

Gloves of Midas
Cause they are the best general prep item in the game.

Vampiric Blade
I just got it recently and still experimenting with it. So far, it seems very useful due to the HP overflow effect.

Dragon Shield
Extremely good for fighter types.

Stone Sigil
For those lame PQIs where farming good amounts of piety is mandatory.

Soul Orb
Excellent for caster types.

Martyr Wraps
I never prep these ever, don't know why I even keep them around. I'd much rather find them late in a run than bring them in at level 1.

IIRC, I have

Fire Heart (because I've got a Paladin strategy that relies on that)
Dragon Shield
Avatar's Symbol (given how hard it was to get...)
Platemail (should probably chuck it given how much I dislike slow)
Martyr Wraps (don't really use them that much)
Gloves of Midas (generic prep)
Trisword (omnomnom)

Superb Locker Items
The stuff dreams are made of

Trisword, Dragon Shield, Crystall Ball

Very Good Locker Items
Top notch stuff, but subject to personal taste

Martyr Wraps, Whurrgarbl, Vampiric Blade, Soul Orb, Amulet of Yendor, Fire Heart, Alchemist's Scroll

Good Locker Items
Solid items, but probably will get shunted out of the locker by the stuff that's just a little bit better.

Fine Sword, Platemail, Rock Heart, Gloves of Midas, Stone Sigil, Elven Boots, Dwarven Gauntlets, Orb of Zot, Pendant of Health, Dragon's Soul

Ha.

My locker: two triswords. Seriously. What if I lose one? Got to have it. Dragon Shield. Martyr Wraps. Whurrgarbl. Fabulous Treasure.

Since platemail became worthless, I prep the wraps 80% of the time, shield or trisword the rest. Not sure why I have Whurrgarbl. Should replace it with another trisword.

I haven't played in a few updates, but I think this is what I have:

Tri-Sword
Whurgarbl
Martyr Wraps
Dragon Shield
Platemail
Dwarven Gauntlets
Fine Sword

As a cheap way to save $50 on a dungeon - restock a lost item after a run. I don't rebuy fine sword, I pick it up on a run and.chuck it back in over the lost one.
I like to transmute an amulet of yendor on the ground when I have a full backpack. I prefer it as a fight boss then level rather.than boosting up 5 when I can level catapult with lots of space to explore. Once you hit lvl 5 you have to explore to get better gear to keep fighting higher monsters anyway.
I think the best options seem to be stuff that gives you early catapult capacity. Fine sword and pendant of health can let you smack a weak lvl 3 at lvl 1.
Tri-sword is good but man it sucks up gold and takes up an early spot. Do people start potioning from level 1?

Strength potion at level 1 with a Trisword gets the mojo flowing and lets you start power-leveling right off the bat.
