Um. Okay... So what would you have me do?

Note that I don't have a lot of time to devote to learning new stuff just to police a wiki.

There is that page on mediawiki : http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam
But I am not expert for this.

Maybe, if you don't have much time give the admin code to someone you trust in the community (and who has time), so we can work at it.

It also be time to save the most important pages... (backup somehow)

People already have admin access to the wiki. I don't have specific web-user access to allow people to modify the install or upload files because security + hacking attempts + targeting because we're outspoken about equality and feminism + no.

Would it be a better idea to move the wiki content to another game wiki site instead? There's really no reason, other than the existing content, that the wiki for DD exists on our servers instead of elsewhere (and we've gotten a lot of requests from game wiki places in the past).

Hmm not sure how easy it is to transfer a wiki, but if you want to do this step I recommend gamepedia.com.

As an interim measure, can we change the user group rights such that only administrators can create pages? Most of the pages we want already exist, and although it might suck to have to request an admin create a page you want it's better than this deluge of spam.

Couple that with a mass deletion of the orphaned pages and user talk pages (if possible) and we should hopefully be able to keep things under control. Moving to a third party wiki hosting service is an option, but the migration would indeed suck.

I supect that the only reasonable way to migrate the wiki would be to create another wiki server with mediawiki, and transport qcf's wiki database to the new server.

But Darvin's suggestion might be worth a try.

Is it possible to create a third tier of privilege in between User and Admin? We could write off User as a bot trap, and place confirmed humans into the in-between tier (let's call it Real User). This would stop the bots entirely, allow new users to do their thing, and keep potentially abusive powers (IP blocking, etc) in the hands of the current admins.
