Special Rules: Whenever you kill a monster it will remove nearby water tiles.

Strategy
Recommended Classes: Wizard, Sorcerer

The boss will either have very high damage or physical resistance, so naturally you want a class that can fling a bunch of fireballs. The three best suppliers of this requirement are the spell casting classes. Wizards, due to their inexpensive spells, Sorcerers, due to their extra mana, and Bloodmages, but due to the fact you won't get them before you do this dungeon (probably) I won't include them. Naturally, you're going to want to avoid mana burn, as it will hurt these classes. If the Aequitas is the boss, you should probably go wizard, as their hit-spell-hit combo is ruined if you can't take a hit from the boss.

If you are playing as a Wizard, it is fairly straightforward. Go around converting glyphs, to max out your mana, and killing higher level monsters. When you are level 7 or so, and a few experience from level 8, begin fireballing the boss. When you run out of mana, kill an enemy to level up. Continue fireballing, using potions if necessary. This is extremely easy, and you don't need a mid-fight level up. Feel free to use melee in addition to fireballs if it is the Tower of Goo or you can survive a hit from Aequitas.

If you are playing a sorcerer, find BURNDAYRAZ asap and do a hit-spell-hit combo on a level above you. Convert glyphs whenever you find them to get your mana to 18 and then 24. Continue doing hit-spell-hit combos on higher level monsters until you are level 7. When you are level 7, and a few exp from level 8, hit the boss. Fireball him until you can't fireball anymore. Kill a lower level monster to level up. Continue to use the hit-spell-hit combo, using potions if necessary, until the boss is dead.

Note that this dungeon can easily be completed by non-mage classes, but they are recommended. If you do approach this dungeon with a melee specialist class like Monk, Warlord, or Paladin, bringing the Really Big Sword as a preparation is advised. This will give you a tremendous damage bonus against physical-resist enemies.

Quests
The only quest in the Northern Desert is Desert Rose which requires you to beat it with both the wizard and sorcerer.
If you can, regen fire higher level enemies by throwing your first three fireballs, turning on BLUDTUPOWA, exploring three tiles, and then fireballing again. Note that if you have more than 18 mana, you may be able to explore less than three tiles for your fourth fireball. When you reach level 7, and a few experience from level 8, throw all your fireballs at the boss until you don't have enough mana. Kill a lower level monster to level up and continue fireballing. When you next run out of mana, either regen fireball or use potions. This should not be hard.
When you next run out of mana, either regen fireball or use potions. This should not be hard.

Recommended Classes: Wizard, Sorcerer, Bloodmage

Both of the bosses in this dungeon have physical resist, so naturally you want a class that can fling a bunch of fireballs. The three best suppliers of this requirement are the spell casting classes. Wizards, due to their inexpensive spells, Sorcerers, due to their extra mana, and Bloodmages, due to their extra powerful mana potions. Naturally, you're going to want to avoid mana burn, as it will hurt these classes. If the Tormented One is the boss, you should avoid sorcerers entirely, as their hit-spell-hit combo is ruined by mana burners.

Feel free to use melee in addition to fireballs if it is the Tower of Goo.

If you are playing a bloodmage, you also want to find BURNDAYRAZ asap. Convert all other glyphs you find so you can hit 18 mana.

If you are playing a bloodmage, you also want to find BURNDAYRAZ asap. Convert all other glyphs you find so you can hit 18 mana.

Quests
Both of the bosses in this dungeon have physical resist, so naturally you want a class that can fling a bunch of fireballs. The three best suppliers of this requirement are the spell casting classes. Wizards, due to their inexpensive spells, Sorcerers, due to their extra mana, and Bloodmages, due to their extra powerful mana potions. Naturally, you're going to want to avoid mana burn, as it will hurt these classes. If the Tormented One is the boss, you should avoid sorcerers entirely, as their hit-spell-hit combo is ruined by mana burners.

Feel free to use melee in addition to fireballs if it is the Tower of Goo.

There are many different monster types you will encounter throughout Desktop Dungeons. They have a range of abilities and stats, and each present a unique difficulty to the player. There are two formulas to determine the base stats for every monster. For hp, you use (n+3)²+10, where n is the monsters level, and for attack you use (n*(n+5))/2, where n is the monsters level. Monsters also have an attack and hp percent value. That indicates what percent of the base number provided below they have. For example, Bandits have 100% hp and 66% attack. Therefore a level 3 Bandit would do 8 damage and have 26 hp.

The Gorgon is one of the few monsters in the game to use the Death-gaze special. If your health is below 50%, a Gorgon's attack causes instant death (though Death Protection can still save you). However, this is not as dangerous as it first appears. Higher level gorgons are already very likely to deal more than half your health in a single attack, and effectively gain no benefit from their death gaze. By preying on their generally low durability, this makes them prime targets for bonus experience. Only characters with extreme durability (such as Monks or Dwarves) will even need to concern themselves with death gaze.

Where the death gaze of gorgons becomes truly dangerous is when fighting lower-level opponents. Because the gorgon has first strike, a 1st level gorgon can potentially kill a high-level adventurer if you're below half-health. The best way to deal with such gorgons is to slow them with WEYTWUT, WONAFYT or use the entanglement boon of the The Earthmother. This will disable their first strike and allow you to clean them up without risking death gaze attacks. The Assassin is also useful in this regard, since his swift hands ability ignores first strike.

If you cannot slow a gorgon, the best course of action is to try to kill them while you're at high-health to avoid their death gaze. This is especially important for users of Platemail, who likely won't even take damage from a very low-level foe but are very vulnerable to death gaze.

The Gorgon boss is Medusa, and she has 100% death gaze. This means that if you are not at full health, she will instantly kill you with her attack. She also has the Mana Burn special attack, so using the HALPMEH glyph to heal between strikes won't work. Medusa's primary weakness is that she's a relatively fragile boss, so any method of setting up a long attack chain will defeat her relatively easily. Taurog and Dracul are particularly useful for battling her, since Taurog can easily allow you to create a death protection chain to ignore her death gaze, and Dracul's blood swell, blood hunger and blood tithe boons are excellent ways to heal yourself between attacks even after your mana has been drained.

Class Features
*SAPPHIRE LOCKS: Naturally poisonous strikes, petrifies enemies, starts with ENDISWAL glyph, -50% attack bonus
*AMETHYST GAZE: Deathgaze effect deals unresistable damage upon attacking enemies with low health, starts with 10% Deathgaze

Strategy
The Gorgon is a very bizarre class. Gorgons play sort of like monks, in that they both rely on the "regen fight" strategy, and they both have naturally bad damage. Gorgons don't have base damage reductions, but unfortunately raising bonus damage is harder to accomplish. However, with the right items, the Gorgon should negate their negative bonus damage and beyond.

The most powerful part about gorgons are their intrinsic poison attacks. Combined with their natural physical resistance, gorgons are able to tackle higher level enemies than monks can manage. Combining this with their death gaze immunity means gorgons are easy prey.

What the Gorgon's Deathgaze does is that when the enemy is below the Deathgaze %, their resistances and First Strike are nullified. A good Deathgaze % essentially removes the need of GETINDARE and WEYTWUT at later levels.

The biggest handicap that gorgons have to face is that they petrify enemies on kill. This includes kills with BURNDAYRAZ. The bad part about this is that in narrow places, the gorgon has to spend 6 mana to progress further. This means the gorgon is at a disadvantage on maps with many narrow hallways. Petrified enemies also don't leave any bloodstains, so this means gorgons have terrible synergy with The Earthmother and Dracul. Gorgons also fare poorly against maps with lots of undead enemies, because poison doesn't work against them.

Certain glyphs are a blessing to gorgons. IMAWAL synergizes with the gorgon very well because of their playstyle depending on facing higher level enemies. An early BURNDAYRAZ is an important tool for gorgons, since it maximizes their damage. Adding a few fireballs before poisoning will take down high-level enemies faster with less resource wasted. BLUDTUPOWA is also useful for gorgons, because they will need mana for ENDISWAL.

Binlor Ironshield is one of the best god for a gorgon to worship. Since you'll be casting ENDISWAL many, many times as a gorgon, Stone Form is the best boon a gorgon could ever ask for. There is never a shortage of walls as a gorgon, so gaining and spend piety is no sweat. Taurog also gives great benefits to gorgons, but constant casting of ENDISWAL means you'll be losing a lot of piety for long-term worship, so converting out of Taurog ASAP. Never worship The Earthmother and Glowing Guardian.

Gorgons need bonus damage badly, so that means Perseverance Badge, Badge of Honour, and Dwarven Gauntlets are excellent items for gorgons. Battlemage Ring is also a good option.

The fighter's class challenges have no real overarching storyline or lesson, as the fighter itself doesn't really teach anything unique.

Bleat It
Gorgons have broken into the Kingdom's petting zoo, spreading madness and petrification. Fight your way through the enraged goats and put an end to the gorgon leader!
Monsters: Goats and Gorgons
Boss: Medusa (Level 8)
Recommended Race(s): Goblin

The strange thing about this challenge is there are only 15 gorgons (two per levels 1-7 and Medusa) and everything else is a level 1 goat. This level teaches you about maxing out your exp from popcorn. It provides free, non-convertable WONAFYT and IMAWAL glyphs, although those are the only glyphs that spawn. You really shouldn't really have much trouble beating Medusa. By level six or seven you should easily be able to kill her using your potions and your Death Protection.

Toe-to-Toe
A particularly troublesome djinn thinks it's being smart by harassing our northern caravans with illusion magic and wild beasts. Mere guards cannot hope to defend against this: this matter needs someone made of sterner stuff.
Monsters: All unlocked monsters and Desert Trolls
Boss: Imadjinnius
Recommended Preparations: Perseverance Badge
Recommended Race(s): Dwarf or Orc

This challenge is basically Northern Desert with different boss. Unfortunately the boss has Retaliate: Fireball so you are going to have to take every one of his 125 damage shots. The most important thing is the guaranteed GETINDARE spawn. Use to level up as much as possible, preferably to level 10. That's 180 hp as dwarf or 130 as an orc. Though potions, your Death Protection, a dodge (if you get lucky), and first strike. Beating this challenge will give you Platemail.

The Arena
Okay Fighter, it's time to do what you do best! Can you survive the trials of the Quaking Arena and emerge as champion?
Monsters: All unlocked monsters
Boss: Mister Goat
Recommended Preparations: Perseverance Badge, Health Potion, Mana Potion, Quicksilver Potion, Strength Potion, Can of Whupaz, Transmutation Seal
Recommended Race(s): Goblin

You start with platemail. This dungeon consists of 9 waves. The 9th wave holds the boss Mister Goat. The next wave spawns when you beat the strongest monster from the previous one. The strongest monster in the first wave is always a snake. Each "mini-boss" holds a different glyph. The order of them is different every time but they will always be BURNDAYRAZ, BYSSEPS, ENDISWAL, GETINDARE, IMAWAL, LEMMISI, PISORF, and WONAFYT. In the corners of the arena are a cracked amulet a sword, a bear mace, and a slayer wand. Save BURNDAYRAZ, BYSSEPS, and LEMMISI to whittle down the bosses resist through your extra tiles. Use the slayer wand on the level 9 "mini-boss". Save as many glyphs as possible for mid-fight level ups against the boss.

People often see vicious dungeons as above and beyond. Yes, they are much tougher, but with the right strategy and planning anyone can win a vicious dungeon. The object of my mini-series of annotated playthroughs is to prove to you that you can beat vicious, no matter who you are. I plan to prove this by going through and beating every vicious dungeon with a human fighter. The reason is with a fighter, you have to have a good strategy and know little tricks to make dungeons easier, as they themselves have very little leverage. I do not recommend you do this. One last important note: to beat most vicious, you will need top notch preparations. Make sure you have upgraded all of your buildings as high as you can.

In the fourth part of this collection we will look at Demonic Library. There are six different bosses at least one status affect that will hurt you and they all deal considerable damage. On top of that they give each other death protection and there's a fairly dangerous monster set. Still, no matter how daunting, every dungeon is beatable. We'll start off by looking at my preparations.

Tri-Sword: This is a wonderful all-round preparation, second only to the Dragon Shield.
Black Market: This is more of a personal preference. Still, it helps because I'll be prepping elites.
Tiki Tooki: This is basically the center of strategy. You'll see why later.
Magnet: Fireball: This is essential for classes that need leverage early, and the fighter needs as fast as he can get it.
Perseverance Badge: A great prep that gives more damage and takes up little room.
Elite Items: I'm really hoping for Elven Boots, because a lot of the bosses do magic damage and the extra mana helps with the low hp bosses.
Potion Kit: Health and Mana Potions are always useful. Whupaz is essential for every vicious dungeon. Reflex is always helpful. Strength combos with the tri-sword to help get me off my feet.
Transmutation Seal: I have no need for the other seals, and it's always nice to nab the secret subdungeon.
Let the run begin!

Due to the high-damage demonlord bosses, this troll heart will be useful. The other shop has the elven boots, which I'll buy once I can afford it.

I can't find a good level three target, but this secret subdungeon is Good Glenrick. It is a level six monster with 10 hp and 6 damage. It's the ultimate early level catapult. Oh yeah, I converted WONFYT.

Level one to level four! I'm about to kill this level 6 imp with ENDISWAL and a strength potion, and then the level five imp with my DP. I can easily replenish that with CYDSTEPP.

This may seem a bit early, but I'm going to start worshipping Tiki Tooki. I'll start cleaning up popcorn till I can afford the poison boon, then 20 more. Also, I remembered to convert BYCEPS. The subdungeon just has some gold and a sign.

I'll desecrate Binlor, convert to Dracul, convert CYDSTEPP and pick up GETINDARE. I may lose my 15% magic resistance, but the benefits that I will reap instead are enormous in comparison.

This fight was probably a waste of resources, but it demonstrates the power of poison. I just attack, regen, and repeat.

I'd like to demonstrate the power of GETINDARE. This Succubus is two levels higher than me. I set up a dodge by casting GETINDARE repeatedly while taking death protection off weak doom armors. That way I can clean up doom armors for popcorn later.

To kill the succubus I just dodge, fireball and first strike.

I grabbed a stack of lifesteal.

I'll I have to do to get high level kills is use poison. It's an incredible power-leveling tool.

Since this guy is the hardest of the five demonlords, I'll take him out first. The reason for this is that when you kill a demonlord it gives another demonlord a death protection. If you save the worst for last, it will have two or three death protections. Since I can't use fireball, I'll cast GETINDARE before every attack. Hopefully I'll get lucky enough to get a dodge in the middle of the fight. Also, while I normally couldn't survive a hit from him, GETINDARE combined with my lifesteal reduces his damage by seven.

I attacked this doom armor to see if I can get a dodge, which I did. Now I'll attack the demonlord, poisoning him, regenerate to full stats and finish him off. That gave Perivolcan Ze a death protection.

Here's my next target. I had a dodge, so I figured I'd attack Mesostel Pa. I dodge, attack, throw down a mana potion, and win with first strike. That gave Perivolcan Ze another death protection

I have a dodge and I'm about to level up, fully healing me, so I'll start hitting him. That way I get an extra hit. To take out his death protections I fireball the first one, discharge the burning dealing one damage and taking out a second death protection and then GETINDARE for the kill. That gave Aphelion a death protection.

I'll take out this guy next. I just fireball twice, attack, regenerate, and repeat. That gave Aphelion another death protection.

This guy weakened me a bit so I'll buy a fortitude tonic, but I forget it until later.

I started fighting Aphelion. He has magic attack, poisonous, first strike and two death protections. I can't regen fight this guy, because Aphelion poisons me too. I dodged, fireballed, dodged again, burnt out a death protection, used burning to take out his other death protection. Now I'll kill this djinn to level up. Then I fireball him so I kill him without poisoning me. Then I buy a fortitude tonic and cure my weakening.

Now that I've killed the five demonlords they have reawakened THE AVATAR. I cleaned up the map so I am about to level up mid-fight with against The Avatar. Then I convert my troll heart to buy a fine sword. Lastly, I pick up another level of lifesteal to health with the boss.

Red text?! He seems angry. Better kill him.

Here's his stats. He's not actually that strong, but most people have their resources too depleted because of the demonlords. He also spawns level ten monsters with random stats and abilities whenever you hit him. I just whupaz, reflex, use poison, use a mid-fight level up and...

I crush him. Not even a potion or a bloodswell or a bloodpool. He's really not that hard.

Here's my final screen. That's just incase you want to fill in the blanks of what I killed when and so forth. Just to drive home the point of how beatable vicious is, I made quite a few mistakes as a human fighter and I still won with tons of resources to spare.

Key points: Level up ASAP. Tiki Tooki and poison ASAP for leveling and convert out (preferably to Dracul or Glowing Guardian). Take out the tough demonlords first through poison and dodges.

One last note: If this is your first try in Demonic Library, try an easier class like the Warlord, Rogue or Thief. The fighter is not actually a good pick for this dungeon.

Goodbye, good luck, and happy monster killing!

Binlor: I want him early for immediate magic resistance at level one, more blackspace, and good piety to convert off.
Magnet: Fireball: This is essential for classes that need leverage early, and the fighter needs leverage as fast as he can get it.
Let the run begin!

Our adversary speaks! Whatever. I'm going to keep racking up piety and ignore him.

This is unfortunate. I was really hoping to convert into the Glowing Guardian or Dracul. They both give healing and magic resistance, two huge things in this dungeon. You may want to scum for one of them if it is your first time. The only thing I want from Mystera is two mana, so that I can pull off a two fireball and GETINDARE combo. Note that I have gotten 51% magic resistance, 33% of which are from Binlor.

Here's my secret subdungeon. This is great, because it gets me past the earliest levels, which are quite difficult for the fighter. My normal subdungeon just had some gold and a sign. I'll talk about the third subdungeon a little later.

Platemail is a good item. I decide to pick it up and take out that level six warlock.

I made an unfortunate mistake here. I forgot that I can't use GETINDARE, so I had to convert the platemail to kill the warlock.

I picked off a few level ones and now it's time to kill this shade. I got two mana from Mystera, so I can dodge, fireball twice and first strike. I also remembered to convert all of the extra glyphs.

Now I'll take out this warlock with the same method that I used on the shade: dodge, fireball twice and first strike.

Time to fight Namtar. This is a bit earlier than I would have liked, but I was running out of resources. To take him out I had to use most of my potions and a mid-fight level up. It was pretty bad. You would normally use divine healing, like bloodswells, but that wasn't an option for me.

Round two! I don't even have blackspace to regenerate between forms. How unfortunate. To avoid his three awful debuffs you should use Whupaz and Reflex on this form. As long as you don't rack up more than four stacks of curse you won't need popcorn to get rid of it.

Ta da! Namtar leaves behind three things: his corpse, two large gold piles and a pool of corrosion. Go ahead and pick up the gold. Buy out a bunch of stuff. You don't need to cure your corrosion, but if you have extra cash you might as well. Try to get within eight exp from leveling, so you can get a mid-fight level up against Namtar form three.

The Underworld!!! This is the third subdungeon. You must have Namtar's Corpse to enter, so make sure you have space for it. Make sure you have BURNDAYRAZ. Here's the quick info on the Underworld.

The Underworld consists of four floors. On each floor Namtar revives to fight you, with increasingly worse stats. Each time you kill him it takes a toll on your stats. The toll gets worse every floor. The first three floors are 5x15 hallways with walls on both sides. They each have three imps. Floor one has a level one, three and four imp. Floor two has a level three, five and six imp. Floor three has a level five, seven and eight imp. The fourth floor is a 5x5 room with only five open spaces in the shape of a cross. You may not exit the Underworld.

And it begins! For this guy just use BURNDAYRAZ to fireball him to death. Use your mana potions, a schadenfreude (if you bought it), and a mid-fight level up (if you set it up).

I win. Since you shouldn't be attacking this form use him and his imps to get rid of your curse stacks.

This is probably the hardest of his Underworld forms. He can deal considerable damage, and with your newly lowered health it will be tough to survive too many hits. And I happened to be out of health potions. Fortunately I picked up an Amulet of Yendor so I used a mid-fight level up to finish him. You should use your death protection for this form. Remember that you can finish off a Retaliate: Fireball monster with a fireball.

Whew, that was tough. I don't have any potions or possible level ups for the third form...

..Who isn't too tough. While it may not look like I have any chance, if you use burning and regen fighting it will work. It's kind of funny that a basic early game tactic works so late in the game...

He's finished. It's almost over. I will kill this guy if it is the last thing my fighter does.

This form is a joke. It has 79 hp and does one damage. I've never heard of anyone losing to it.

Sure, like I believe that promise. Enjoy the pit, Namtar. You won't be leaving any time soon.

Here's my final screen. That's just incase you want to fill in the blanks of what I killed when and so forth. This was a tight run. If I had been able to convert into the Glowing Guardian or Dracul it would have been much easier, but you can't always be lucky.

Key Points: Worship Binlor early and stack magic resistance through stone skin at level one, and convert out (hopefully into the Glowing Guardian or Dracul). Use whupaz and reflex on form two. Use divine healing before you enter into the Underworld. Make sure you have BURNDAYRAZ before you go into the Underworld.

One last note: If this is your first try in Namtar's Lair, try an easier class like the Berserker, who can skip the Binlor step, the Warlord or the Priest. The fighter is not actually a good pick for this dungeon.

Goodbye, good luck, and happy monster killing!

One last note: If this is your first try in Namtar's Lair, try an easier class like the Berserker, who can skip the Binlor step, or the Priest. The fighter is not actually a good pick for this dungeon.

Goodbye, good luck, and happy monster killing!
