I have, a long time ago, ran into the gods problem and suggested the following:

solving the ingame gods subdungeons could give you an idol, which unlocks a puzzle pack for the explorers guild. Every god gets one and it leads you through the process of unlocking the god and making his alatar available in dungeons (learning how to call upon him and worship him). They could serve as god tutorials which are found in the same manner as new gods are found now, except people would get an incentive (flavour and conten wise) to explore god's behaiviour, and you wouldn't have an exter altar spawning in certain dungeons when you solve a gods subdungeon, or get locked into worship if you decide to take him, thus screwing up your run.

I still think this is a good idea, and quite possibly a necessary one for various reasons. The puzzle packs needn't be large, or symetrical, just big enough to show you the ropes and avoid "I unlocked god X but didn0t want to risk my runs by experimenting with him"

Actually, it was because of that suggestion from you that I promoted to leave the dieties to puzzles.
But I'd really like the character in those puzzles to be some kind of pilgrim or worshipper with no class features apart from gaining piety fast or having starting piety.

I love that idea Lujo! The flavor and content you mention are just what I need for incentive.

Yeah, definitely a Pilgrim. He would have X starting piety, depending on what the puzzle needed. Yeah, but the flavor of learning through idols, while still teaching you the ropes sounds great.
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

I feel very flattered and a bit redfaced now :) I did put a lot of thought into it even back then, and ofc, pilgrim's a good idea, adventurers find idols, scriptures, tablets or whatever and pilgrims go looking for their meaning through puzzle packs - which serve both as tutorials as well as flavour/joke polygons for various gods and building up a bit of "lore". It's incredible how much this does for a game to be remembered by, and how much it sticks in the casual crowd's mind if done with bit of sense of humor :)

Also, if the pilgrim is a blank character it also teaches the player that gods "tack on abilities" which could prompt people to their importance :)

Not to go into all gameplay/learning curve/testing purposes reasons for why it's probably necessary again...:)

It'd be fun, but I can imagine the headaches some of those dungeons would cause for the programmers, especially for the gods who are still in flux.

"This new dungeons will teach you to forsake killing the weak, and slay the mighty in the name of the Glowing Gu-"
"...actually, he hates killing the strong now. Arrogance, y'know. But now he's okay with killing the weak."
"...just... just go away for a while. Go bother the Earthmother or something."

I was assuming it would be after the balance changes. Anyways, I lol'd at that monologue.

Yeah, all puzzles would never work. They'd break every week.
