Agree with sidestepper, the elite items unbalance the game. They aren't being given a negative attribute to balance them like other powerful items, and gold costs are annoying to work towards.

Also good to see Nandrew getting a good rant in at last. We've all had our turn...

I use Elite Items prep + Translocation Seal + Black Market all the time during my vicious runs and I'm sure I win ~9 out of 10 runs (no idea if it's standard for a run with preps). I always try to translocate 3x+ item and usually have enough gold to buy the rest, especially since the first boss always drops a nice bonus. Funny how people differ in their play-styles.

The Guitar, as have been mentioned, is ridiculously imbalanced item. Slow+TT+Guitar=3 bonus XP/enemy, it's even better found early with EM, attack the highest level enemy you can take almost take down, entangle (just 4 pity), guitar and enjoy the awesome level jump, oh and don't forget to use IMDAWAL earlier. Out of all the elite items the only one which I don't really find useful is the Orb.

If I'm going to take a shop preparation, it's going to be Quest Item, because I play a low unlock game as far as items goes and taking that practically gurantee me 2 cheap items that for the most part, is going to be a WAY bigger contribution than most of the elite items at half the cost.

Whoops, incoming Soul Orb/Viper Charm nerf!

I don't know how strong Elite items are on a pure power level basis, but on a cost effectiveness scale going with an elite strategy cuts down on my gold income, so I don't bother with them.

For the record: love elite items. Translocate one, buy another. Experimented with compression instead of translocation, but a free awesome-ish item, plus probably another, plus whatever you brought from your locker... real strong.

I use them quite frequently. Extra 20% damage and 18 hp for free is awesome. Then for my real gold use I can get 3 potions or a free 5 level ups all as a Binlor Worshipper at level one. Just prep Elites, Black Market, and translocation.
We made an expansion and it is awesome. Really, you should check it out, especially if you're looking for some extra challenge.

We have two camps here. One says that most Elite items are too expensive to be used in practical scenarios, another that says that they are great if you take steps to circumvent their costs, either by prep or by translocation. So basically, everyone is saying the same thing, just in different ways.

In the 50-gold past, I found that Elite items were nice things to steal, or occasionally buy. Except for the kegs, they never seemed to work *quite* as well as I thought they ought to. In the less-gold future... as someone who is all thumbs when it comes to Tikki Toovi, they've seemed like more of a "on a rare occasion. Or if playing a tinker, with some translocation power" kinda thing.

That said, until I read this post, I completely missed all the wonderful uses for the guitar. (Thanks Nandrew!)
