DD MMO?

Postby Nurator on Sat Nov 10, 2012 3:44 pm

I am looking for some good MMOs for some time, and I circled it down to one I would LOVE to play:
A dungeon crawler with an MMO city builder on top.

So you would have to build a city with smiths and so on with the materials you get by defeating ogres, golem and so on.

Then I thought: Hey! You are already playing something like that: DD :)
The only thing lacking is its MMO element. You are playing all by yourself and have no concept of energy or something similar.

I would love to play something like that! So, are you guys know what you will program after DD? :)

Or does anyone know a game, that works like that?

I'm sure there are plenty of facebook / kongregate games that work like that...

This is the first I'm hearing of people who like the energy mechanic from pay to win games.

And a "hub" or "town" requiring actions, which you regain every X minutes, is a fairly basic thing to have as a layer ontop of the actual gameplay, as a simple way to make playing the game daily rutine, and a lot of such games do exactly that, dungeons, blacksmiths and golems are just thematic elements. Because humans are creatures of habit making something rutine (for example daily quests) is a very good way to constuct compulsion engines.

And although I'm trying to be nice I find the idea of making a Desktop Dungeons MMO rather distasteful. Desktop Dungeons is such a great example of game design, that it'd be nothing short of draconic to cram these compulsion and energy based mechanics into it. Good games should be good because the gameplay is intresting and intellectually stimulating, by placing the player in situations of ambigius desicions (which Desktop Dungeons already do neatly through their darkness and exploration), not because you are being herded towards you next carrot by experience-bars, needless level systems or energy systems.

Agreed that the gameplay and mechanics wouldn't work well in an MMO, but if you modified that and kept the bosses, items, monsters, etc. in name and theme it could work.

I thought more about something like that: You build your city out of the materials of the enemies you kill (if you kill a ogre with a spear, you get a lot of wood, a little stone and a little cloth). In that city you can upgrade your blacksmith/mage to get you better weapons to take into the dungeon. The dungeon itself would be plain DD, the other part a MMO .

It isn't something I actively seek out and play, but I guess if you took a little time to look around there'd be more like that.
