Can I translate Desktop Dungeons into Chinese?

Postby zqxinran on Thu Dec 05, 2013 10:11 am

I'm from China.
As far as know, lots of Chinese players are not willing to play a game which has lots of English words.

As big fans, my friends and I want to translate it into Chinese.
And I'm sure that there will be more people get to know more about this game and buy it!

But we don't how to get all the text of the game.
So, I'm wondering, would you please give me the text?
I‘ll report my rate of progress everyday.

We're looking at Steam's translation beta thing at the moment, not sure exactly how that would integrate with everything, but it would be great to have the game in different languages :)

OK, so when and how can I take part into the translation?

I'd volunteer to translate the game in French. I've done some amateur translation work... nothing too fancy, but I have some experience.

What's the "Steam translation beta thing"?

There's a player-driven translation system that games like Monaco were using a while ago via Steam. I'll have to see if that's still something that's happening...

I see. If the plan starts, would you please post an announcements? :)

hello all,

I am from China and is also an enthusiast on this translation thing. Plus we know how to extract game text from the asset file, and even how to repack it back, sort of. There's some Textured Font usage but most Chinese texts can be rendered with the player's system font fallback for Arial.

We already have the Chinese translation project setup, maybe not the Steam beta thing, but some python scripts should be able to port the work over. Anyway it's a start.

So please contact me at qq 285378379 if you want to join us?

And I hope our dear developer doesn't mind the hack? We won't leak stuff or whatever, not cool stealing from indies.

(by the way why the game has a ttf for each size of the font? I thought ttf was perfectly scalable)

Heya. Sorry, we're a bit burned out and enjoying a holiday right now - figuring out translations and stuff feels a lot like work ;)

Unity turns each font into a single texture atlas image, very few game engines scale ttf fonts in realtime.

That can certainly be done at loading time. 5 copies look like a hack...lol

The game's flavor text is absolutely adorable. Gave us quite a lot of fun trying to paraphrase it in Chinese. Really awesome work. :D
