This dungeon highlighted to me how much it can matter which direction you explore in. I was working in an outward spiral pattern from the middle and had over three quarters of the map uncovered and had only found 2 useless shops, no subdungeons and no boss. For a generally easy dungeon, it wasn't looking so easy.
But I was sticking to my guns and looking for higher level targets. I was casting WONAFYT and ENDISWAL everywhere even though I wasn't attacking anything with my massive 2 damage. Oh right, I hadn't found any gods either and was thinking how much potential piety I was wasting.
Patience paid off, though. I only attacked higher level monsters as I found them and slowly my XP climbed. I eventually found SMM and had to ignore him I had the vampire blade but no poison and only 11MP so regen wasn't feasible yet.
As it turned out, I ended up killing SMM at level 9 with only the vampire sword and the +4 sword, along with BURDAYRAZ. I still hadn't found any subdungeons or other good shop items. I couldn't even buy WHUPAZ as I had no gold. I did find the Pact Maker and took Concensus and the Alchemist pact which let me level up during the SMM fight.
After killing SMM I walked around for cleanup and found everything that I wished I had found earlier, including the gold subdungeon, which I guess I really didn't need.
This week has really taught me to rethink how to play this game. The new way is working better than the old one.
