The Thief is a 2-bit trickster put into a 32-bit job and doesn't have any particularly heroic abilities. Of course, given the level of resourcefulness and adaptability that any good criminal possesses, who really needs heroism?
What's he about?
STABBER: - Helps you munch on popcorn. Also, it's a one-shot damage boost which scales with level.
HOARDER: - Adds extra boosters, potions and gold (confirmation?) to the map. The thing to note is that the potency of most of this scales with your level, sometimes in a significant way. Ordinarily, the three attack boosters present on a map add up to +1 damage per level, while the four attack boosters the thief can find add up to +2 damage per level.
SURVIVOR: - Potions restore and additional +20% to the "other" attribute. This not only makes the potions stronger, but potions in general scale with level and stat boosts, and you get 1 more of each from Hoarder.
So what the thief is about, at the most basic level, is getting your stats up and getting your level up to make use of all his abilities. Stabber helps you level up and ding while you fight stuff higher level than you, all the extra stat boosts make your stats bigger, and the final barrage of potions helps your spike the boss or bossess down with both glyphs and melee.
Races
What the Thief is looking for in a race is help leveling up in order to cash in on all the bonuses. Goblin, Orc, Halfling and Elf each play into this dynamic. Humans, Dvarwes and Gnomes, who themselves offer benefits once leveled up won't necessarily struggle, but won't necessarly handle as smoothly.
Goblin
More than anything else, the Thief benefits from levels. Besides levels, he likes stat boosts - health and mana ones, in order to cash in on his potions. This happens to play perfectly into what the average goblin wants to do - boosts stats and ding. Since the goblin generally needs fewer kills to get high level (as he can pad the XP bar with glyph conversions when needed), this leaves more popcorn around to be munched up with Stabber, too.
Goblin Thief is one of those ideal combiantions where the race perfectly answers the demands of the class. It is a very frequent PQI combination which means it will often be suggested by the game for clearing out Vicious Dungeons.
Halfling
The obvious benefit of the Halfling Thief is that his CP bonus provides a lot of potions which play in nicely with plenty of the thief abilities. Ways to boost health are somewhat plentiful in the game, and this can make health potions quite effective at lower levels, which any thief will appreciate. Very easy to play and straightforward combination.
Gnome
The Gnome Thief is very similar to their
Halfling Thief counterpart (read above), except that they are less susceptible to
Mana burn and more to
Poisonous.
Orc
The Orc Thief can land very powerful Stab attacks due to the bonus Base Damage, if they also manage to get
First strike they can brute force through most of the uncomplicated dungeons.
Strategy
The thief is one of the most well-balanced and versatile classes in the game, and is best described as a jack of all trades. What's better, you really don't have to do any work to get the most out of his class features; more powerful potions and more stats boosters are just things you'll get to benefit from naturally. However, he is not well-suited to most specialized strategies and will need to find ways to leverage all of his resources effectively to win.
Thieves are best played as hybrids that juggle spellcasting and melee combat to win.
A particularly good combination for thieves is combining the HALPMEH glyph with deities and items that boost their resistances. The higher your resistances, the more effective your hit points become. Because his mana will be used to regenerate health due to
SURVIVOR class trait, this allows the thief to funnel all the advantage of his extra powerful potions into hit points. It's a very good idea to find a way to increase your damage output when playing the thief in this manner, relying on your potions and resistances for survival. The HP->Attack booster swap is strongly recommended for such a character.
Thieves benefit well from the Trisword and
Dragon Shield items as preparations.
